Fredericksburg Peaches: 9 Juicy Ways To Enjoy Them

Updated Jul 6, 2022 by Dave Lee | 8 minute read | May contain affiliate links

There’s more to the Texas Hill Country than wineries and small towns, as I learned on my first visit when my girlfriend Kel expressed a desire to pick Fredericksburg peaches.

Peach season in Gillespie County runs from May to August every year. During this time, orchards and roadside markets overflow with more than 30 varieties of peaches.

Being the overachievers that we are, it wasn’t long before picking fresh peaches in an orchard turned into a story idea for Feastio.

How many ways could we enjoy the best peaches in Fredericksburg, Texas? What seasonal dishes with lots of peaches were being made? We spent two weekends there on a mission to find out.

Vineyards Get All The Attention These Days But Peach Business Still Holding Strong

Drive out on U.S. 290 into the Hill Country and you might wonder if grapes are replacing peaches as the staple of Fredericksburg farmers.

The short answer? No. Experts say both industries are thriving, even benefiting each other. But the long answer gets a little more complicated.

In Austin, most people are familiar with Fredericksburg peaches. Nationally, though, Hill Country peaches are only a blip on the peach-growing radar. The top peach-producing regions are California, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

Not so with wine. Within the past five years, the Hill Country wine scene, which includes 60 wineries about 30 lie between Johnson City and Fredericksburg has drawn attention on the national and even worldwide stages.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine included the Texas Hill Country on its list of 10 Best Wine Destinations in 2014, alongside the Aegean Islands of Greece, Frances Languedoc region and Sonoma, Calif. Texas ranks as the No. 5 wine-producing state in the country, and the Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area, or grape-growing region, covers 9 million acres, making it the second largest in the nation.

Farmers here are turning to grapes, not so much because the soil is magical or the weather ideal, but because its a good wine-selling area, said Jim Kamas, an extension service fruit specialist in Fredericksburg and Texas A& M University assistant professor who has written a book about growing grapes and another about growing peaches.

Das Peach Haus was the perfect first stop of our day. They sell jams, sauces, food, peach wine and so much more. To top it off they allow you to enjoy your purchase in a shaded patio area in the back or along a small creek. Perfect to share some wine and cheese with friends. It was my favorite spot!

The marketplace is the perfect place to get a little bit of everything. Theres restaurants, sweet shops, boutiques, vintage stores, and the list goes on. We spent a good 2 hrs walking into each shop and trying out all kinds of food and drinks. I HIGHLY recommend stopping at Pritzer and buying a couple of their praline pretzels. I seriously cant wait to go back and bring a box full home. Dont get too full theres so many things to try including the chocolate covered pickles and jalapenos!

Tip: Come early to avoid larger crowds. The street tends to get full by lunch time.

Springtime is bluebonnet season

When I learned Id be visiting Fredericksburg in early April, I knew bluebonnets, the blue wildflower that blankets fields throughout the Hill Country in springtime, would be nearing their peak. When I lived in the Dallas area, I looked forward to driving through a bluebonnet trail 35 miles south of the city in Ennis, TX, every spring, but I hadnt laid eyes on them since leaving the Lone Star state seven years earlier.

Theyre as common as the yellow butterweed and wild mustard plants that cover vacant fields in my home state of Indiana, I thought, as we traveled down a 45-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 290 from Fredericksburg to Johnson City, Texas. But these blue beauties are not weeds.

Sweeten Your Summer With A Visit To The Orchards Farm Stands And Shops Of A Quaint Hill Country Town

Story and photographs by Hannah J. Phillips

Growing up in Austin, one of the things I most looked forward to every summer was our annual haul of Fredericksburg peaches. My grandfather ordered them by the case every year, and my mom would stack box upon box in our kitchen once they arrived. With four siblings, we worked through them pretty quickly often eating three or four in one sitting.

When I moved back to Texas and started travelling out to Big Bend, I always stopped at local stands along Highway 290 to relive those childhood memories. More recently, day trips out to Fredericksburg have provided a much-needed break from the monotony of quarantine. The Hill Country is always a good escape, and its hard to beat a sunny afternoon of scouring local farm stands for the best peaches. Using the full list of local orchards as a reference, I rounded up a few of my favorite spots to find everything from peach ice cream, peach salsa, peach preserves and of course, boxes of famous Fredericksburg peaches.

Mill Around A Market Square

On a weekly trek to the center of the city, dozens of vendors line the Marktplatz von Fredericksburg for the long-running Fredericksburg Farmers Market. As the smell of wood fired pizza fills the square, crowds of residents travel from food trucks to farm stands in search of creative local products. Our suggestion? Located In The Heart Of The Texas Hill Country

Fischer & Wiesers Das Peach Haus is the country store where it all began for Fischer & Wieser Specialty Foods. The building itself has an interesting history it used to be located close to downtown Fredericksburg and was situated on the railroad tracks that ran right through town. It was a Lone Star Beer Warehouse, constructed in 1913 with high ceilings to moderate the high temperatures of Hill Country summers. It served Lone Star in this capacity for a time, until Prohibition ruined the industry, and later it became a wholesale grocery warehouse where Mark Wiesers mother worked as an accountant.

Visiting Das Peach House In Fredericksburg

On Wednesday, Monique and I took a day trip to the German town of Fredericksburg, TX to visit Fischer and Wiesers Das Peach Haus. We spent the day touring their property, learning about their jams and jellies, sampling everything , and wine tasting!

The company is my favorite type: a family-run company thats been going strong for nearly 50 years. I met Mark Wieser and the whole Fischer family, and they are the sweetest.

They showed us around the property, fed us a farm-to-table lunch , and let us sample wine from nearby vineyards. We also watched a cooking demonstration, followed by 4 more courses of food. The day was not lacking in culinary experiences.

Das Peach Haus is Fischer and Wiesers location in Fredericksburg, and it would make such a fun destination for a girls getaway, a family weekend trip, or just a day trip like we did! Visitors can stop by to sample the Fischer and Wieser products, taste wine from around the Texas Hill Country, enjoy the back porch overlooking a pond and pine trees, or take a cooking class.

Fischer and Wieser recently launched their Culinary Adventure Cooking School, where you can sign up for a cooking class for 8 to 24 people. John DeMers leads the classes, and he is a hoot and a half. I mean it. I was laughing so hard the whole time he was cooking!

Thanks for your hospitality, Fischer and Wieser!

Happiest weekend, friends! My sister is coming in town, so Ill be hanging out with her. Ive got lots of fun Austin-y things planned
