Slo Wine Industry Members Honored At Mid

The San Luis Obispo County wine industry recognized members of the local wine community in a ceremony Friday at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles.

The annual awards highlight dedication, stewardship, innovation and leadership demonstrated throughout the countys winemaking community.

Honorees this year were Paul Hoover of Still Waters Vineyards, Winegrape Grower of the Year Justin Smith of Saxum Vineyards, Winemaker of the Year and Scott Welcher of Opolo Vineyards, Wine Industry Person of the Year .

The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Wine Country Association, the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area, the Vineyard Team and past award recipients worked together to identify the 2019 winners.

Each year, the San Luis Obispo County wine community looks forward to the Mid-State Fair as a time we can recognize the leadership, hard work and dedication of those who have helped bring worldwide recognition for our regions wines, said Joel Peterson, executive director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance.

Laurie Jervis: Hitching Post Wines Owners Frank Ostini Gray Hartley Return To Production Roots

Frank Ostini and Gray Hartley, owners and winemakers of Hitching Post Wines, have announced that with the current harvest, they are returning to their winemaking roots to the Au Bon Climat winery at Bien Nacido Vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley.

With 36 vintages to their credit, Ostini and Hartley have made their focus pinot noir from Santa Barbara County and the Central Coast. Starting at in 1984, the duo moved to ABC/Qupe Cellars in 1991. From 2001 to 2007, Ostini and Hartley made wine at Santa Marias Central Coast Wine Services.

In 2008, they relocated to Terravant Wine Co. Their label was one of the first to utilize the Buellton-based company for production.

Of their move back to Au Bon Climat, Ostini said: We are returning to where we learned our sensibilities to make balanced, age-worthy wines from the great vineyards of Santa Barbara, and to work again with the pioneering winemaking legends Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist.

Hitching Post Wines was founded in 1979. Hartley, a former Alaskan salmon fisherman, and Ostini, chef and owner of Buelltons Hitching Post II Restaurant, teamed up via their love of wine and winemaking.

The partners produce 10 selections of pinot noir, as well as a rosé , a syrah and a merlot-based blend, Gen Red. Total case production is about 17,000 cases annually.

Hitching Post Wines tasting room is located at 420 E. Highway 246 in Buellton, next door to the famed Hitching Post II eatery.

Wine Enthusiast Honors Pico With Wine

Wine Enthusiast recently named Pico at the Los Alamos General Store to its list of Americas 100 Best Wine Restaurants 2019.

Restaurant co-owner Will Henry also is the co-owner/winemaker of Lumen Wines with Lane Tanner. At the restaurant, the 800-plus bottles included on the wine list share the same philosophy as the food: support small-production farmers and winemakers.

What makes me most excited is what is happening in Santa Barbara County these days, Henry said. Our wine region is producing some of the best wines that have ever been produced in California, from a plethora of winemaking talent that is not only pushing the boundaries in terms of creativity and new concepts, but working with some of the best fruit that our country has ever produced.

Santa Barbara is a hot bed for talent, without the high prices or the inflated egos associated with other winegrowing regions of the world.

The dish that caught the magazine editors taste buds at Pico, 458 Bell St. in Los Alamos, was the duck breast with forbidden dirty rice, local beets and edible flowers.

Trey Fletcher Appointed New Winemaker At Sanford Winery & Vineyards

Illinois-based Terlato Wine Group this month announced that Trey Fletcher is the new winemaker at Sanford Winery & Vineyards at 5010 Santa Rosa Road outside Lompoc.

Fletcher comes to Sanford from Bien Nacido Vineyards in Santa Maria, where for eight years he was the winemaker and general manager. He replaces Steve Fennell, who started at Sanford in 2006.

Previously, Fletcher worked in winemaking roles for Littorai Wines in Sebastopol, Domaine Alfred in Edna Valley and Silverado Vineyards in Napa. He brings extensive international experience and a focus on pinot noir winemaking, according to a news release from WineBusiness.com.

In addition to Sanford, the Terlato family-owned vineyards and wineries include Chimney Rock in Napas Stags Leap District, Rutherford Hill Winery and EPISODE in Napas Rutherford Appellation, Klipsun Vineyards in Washington states Red Mountain, Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier in Australia and Terlato Vineyards in Friuli, Italy.

Hitching Post is run by Frank Ostini, whose family ran the original Hitching Post from 1952, and Gray Hartley, a former commercial fisherman. Back when they started in 1979, they had but one barrel produced in their garage. Later on they made the wines at the Au Bon Climat/Qupe winery, and now the wines are produced in Buellton just around the corner from the Hitching Post restaurant . At the heart of Hitching Post is a focus on Pinot Noir from vineyards in Santa Barbara County, specifically Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Los Alomos. These are traditional wines, aged in French Oak, bottled unfiltered, redolent in vibrant fruit with an intense vein of spice and earthiness but always with balancing fresh acidity.
