Interview With Winery Owner And Winemaker Les Linkogle

1. What were you doing before owning and operating your winery?

I was retired from my career in investment banking and Dorian retired from a career in the insurance industry.

2. What inspired you to want to buy a winery and what were the circumstances around choosing Temecula Valley, CA?

Over twenty years ago, Dorian and I first moved to Temecula to be able to provide open space for our son Larry Link Linkogle to ride his motorcycle. Wineries and motorcycles dont usually have much in common, unless your son is Larry Linkogle. Larry is known as the most influential name in the extreme motocross industry. We planted grapes to off-set the high cost of water never knowing how ideal the growing conditions were in the Temecula Valley for growing grapes.

We began selling some of our grapes to local wineries and when their wines started winning awards then our family considered opening a winery of our own. My uncle owned a winery in Napa and I spent many summers and holidays working at that winery where I developed a love for the art and science of wine making.

I made my first wine in 1997. From 2002 until 2007, we worked towards making our dream a reality. In 2007 we opened the Briar Rose Winery, Temeculas first boutique reservation-only winery.

3. What were your expectations of the winemaker lifestyle at the beginning?

4. People might think winemaking is glamorous. Would you like to set them straight?

Houston Rodeo Uncorked International Wine Competition Results Texas Wineries

November 18, 2021 by Jeff Cope

The 2022 Rodeo Uncorked! International Wine Competition was held Nov. 12-14, 2021, in honor of Charles M. Bear Dalton at NRG Center. The event was a three-day event just like last year due to the pandemic and safety precautions.

This 19th annual competition was held in honor of Dalton, founding member of the annual wine competition, as well as the Rodeos five wine committees. This years competition featured 2,862 entries from 17 countries, including France, Spain, Italy, Israel, Peru, Argentina, and South Africa. Of those entries, 480 entries were from Texas wineries, and 203 entries came from this years featured region, Washington State, an established wine-growing region with a reputation for excellence in wine production.

The wine industry is a vital sector of Texas agriculture, which is why we are incredibly proud to host one of the largest international wine competitions in the country, as it further supports our mission of promoting agriculture, said Rodeo President and CEO Chris Boleman.

The Reserve Grand Champion Best of Show was awarded to Nice Winery for their Cabernet Franc, Paicines, 2018.

The Top Texas Winery was Becker Vineyards.

The Top Texas Wine was awarded to Hye Meadow Winery for their Boooom Red, Texas High Plains, 2017.

Summer 2022 Top Picks: From Chardonnay To Zinfandel

WASHINGTON winemakers push tough boundaries in their quest to make world-class vino. In this section, we review seven distinct styles emerging from the region.

First up is Chardonnay, which has greater competition nowadays in the category of easy-to-love-white-wines but still remains the most popular white varietal for good reasons. Sparkling wines are on the rise and Washington vintners are excelling . Rosé is a favored category, especially in the warmer months, and we highlight four food-friendly versions that are easy on the bottom-line.

Now for the reds: We feature both Leftand Right Bank Bordeaux styles that are masterfully crafted. Cabernet Franc bottled as a single varietal will always be a hit among aficionados because once one falls prey to the romances of this variety, theres no turning back.

Finally, while Zinfandel has long been a West Coast darling with big roots in California, it is still a relatively hard-to-find grape grown within state. But a few vintners are achieving exciting heights with this robust red and we hope you are as tickled by them as we were.

The Queen of White Grapes» Flattering, with exhuberant charm, Chardonnay is the top white varietal worldwide

A streak of apple wood enlivens the finish as the fruit drips. An unabashedly big, fruit-driven Cabernet. Best from 2021 through 2031.”

The Lewis 2019 Cabernet ranks among our best bottlings of Napa Cabernet. Enticing, deep-fruited aromas of black currant, berry and chocolate are stippled with cedar, clove and cinnamon oak spices. The palate centers on opulent core fruit that swirls around a defined structure of supple tannins.
