Do You Need To Stop Drinking

Alcohol may be a popular casual drink, but it is still a drug. If someone suffers from alcohol use disorder , quitting alcohol must be a priority. Alcohol can cause several long term health issues, in addition to some of the personal challenges that come from the disorder. Please review the linked description of alcohol use disorder, and if you need help, review this link for treatments and resources.

If you are not struggling with alcohol addiction, cutting out drinking is more of a personal choice. Your panic attacks won’t go away completely if you cut out alcohol, although reducing your consumption may well reduce the frequency and intensity of your panic attacks, and those that quit drinking altogether may find that they feel better overall.

Alcohol is a drug like any other, and anything that affects your body like alcohol does has the potential to contribute a great deal to your panic attacks and anxiety more generally. For this reason, those that have panic attacks should strongly consider avoiding alcohol wherever possible.

Whether or not you drink, your panic attacks need to be addressed separately. Cutting out alcohol will help you cope better, and should reduce the likelihood of experiencing a panic attack, but it won’t stop them altogether. In order to truly take control of your panic attacks, you should make efforts to treat the underlying anxiety thatâs causing them in the first place.

Why Doesnt It Happen To Everyone

10 Things to Help You Stay Calm Today

Why do some people wake up after drinking feeling relaxed and ready for brunch, while others stay wrapped in a blanket, feeling the weight of the world? New research suggests highly shy people may have a higher risk of experiencing anxiety with a hangover.

A 2019 study looked at 97 people with varying levels of shyness who drank socially. Researchers asked 50 of the participants to drink as they usually would, and the other 47 participants to stay sober.

Researchers then measured levels of anxiety before, during, and after the drinking or sober periods. Those who drank alcohol saw some decrease in anxiety symptoms when drinking. But those who were highly shy tended to have higher levels of anxiety the next day.

Alcohol is also known to make anxiety worse, so you may be more prone to hangxiety if you already have anxiety to begin with.

The Stress Model Of Depression

Experts still do not fully understand what causes depression and why it affects some people but not others.

One theory is called the glucocorticoid hypothesis. The body releases glucocorticoids, which include cortisol, when a person feels stressed. In the short term, these hormones help ready the body for an impending crisis.

However, if the stress lasts for a longer time, glucocorticoids can begin to cause harm.

In this way, some scientists believe that chronic stress damages neurons in the hippocampus, which are particularly sensitive. This damage then paves the way for anxiety and depression.

The authors of the current study were particularly interested in understanding whether resveratrol could reverse the damaging effects of stress and how this might work.

In their study, they found that increased levels of corticosterone produced cell lesions in the brain and increased levels of PDE4D a member of the PDE4 family that scientists believe to be particularly important in cognition and depression.

They also showed that treatment with resveratrol reversed the increase in PDE4D and reduced the number of cell lesions. Resveratrol also prevented the decrease in cAMP.

In engineered mice that could not produce PDE4D, resveratrol boosted cAMPs protective effects even further than in mice with functioning PDE4D.

Resveratrol may be an effective alternative to drugs for treating patients suffering from depression and anxiety disorders.

Science Says Drink Up A Glass Of Wine Can Totally Help Chill You Out

Drinking wineand alcohol in generalis one of the most time-honored ways for disconnecting our brains at the end of the day, says Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., board certified internist and author of numerous health and wellness books, his latest being The Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Solution. This has been documented for over 5,000 years, and theres a good reason for its persistent popularity.

The reason? Alcohol, including wine, calms transiently because it is a central nervous system depressant, explains David L. Katz, M.D., the founding director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center, and the author of Disease-Proof. In other words, alcohol is sedating.

But before you hop into your pajamas and pop your favorite Moscato, there are a few things to keep in mind, including how much you drink and when. One glass of wine at dinner is apt to have a calming effect without impairing sleep, adds Dr. Katz. Yet drinking greater quantities of wine can have a direct effect on your metabolism, which can interrupt your slumber. So the net effect of relying on alcohol for relaxation is adverse if too much is consumed, too close to bed time.

Dr. Teitelbaum also warns: Those who suffer from severe gastritis and nighttime acid reflux should avoid wine since it can aggravate these conditions.

What a great way to live long and love living! says Teitelbaum. Right?

Good News: Red Wine May Help Ease Anxiety

New research shows resveratrol, a compound found in red wine and berries, could protect against depression and fight stress.

Sometimes there’s nothing better than unwinding with a glass of your favorite vino at the end of a long day, but new research shows it probably isn’t just the buzz that’s relaxing you-it’s an antioxidant! Resveratrol, a compound found in the skin and seeds of grapes and berries, gives wine its heart-healthy label, and it also may boost your brain health, too.

Researchers from the University at Buffalo decided to put resveratrol’s anti-inflammatory properties to the test, noting this compound is thought to have anti-stress and anti-depression abilities as well. They studied stress levels in mice, monitoring corticosterone-one of our body’s stress hormones that’s linked to depression and anxiety-to see if resveratrol could have a positive effect.

The researchers found that resveratrol not only helped protect against a buildup of corticosterone, it also eased the body’s stress response. The authors of this study say their research lays the groundwork for using resveratrol as a natural ingredient in antidepressants.

Find Out What Could Be Making Your Anxiety Worse

Pin by Lynelle on Just Sayin

Everyone gets anxious, restless, and frazzled but if you constantly feel worried, tense, or on edge, you may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time.

Doctors make a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder when patients have anxiety symptoms for more than six months.

Examples of other anxiety disorders include:

  • Specific phobias

According to the Mayo Clinic, you can have more than one anxiety disorder.

Research shows that a combination of environmental and genetic factors likely increase a persons risk for developing an anxiety disorder, notes the National Institute of Mental Health. Like so many health conditions, anxiety appears to run in families.

In addition to underlying disorders, anxiety may be caused by stress, whether from a major life event or the accumulated effect of small everyday stressors. Anxiety can also come with a medical condition such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, or thyroid disorders that need treatment. Theres a clear link between caffeine and anxiety and alcohol and anxiety. And certain medications may cause anxiety. In this case, avoiding caffeine and alcohol or changing medications may reduce the anxiety. Its important to note that while all these things can cause anxious feelings, this type of anxiety is distinct from a psychiatric diagnosis of an anxiety disorder.
