We Tried 7 Boxed Red Wines And This Is The Best

Boxed wine has been around since the 1980s, but has spiked in popularity over the past few years as people look for easier ways to store and drink wine, as well as be more eco-conscious. In fact, more people are turning to boxed wine after realizing the quality of wine is the same as whats in the bottles, and its way easier to let family and friends pour themselves a glass right out of the fridge without the need for a corkscrew.

In the name of science, we tried seven different boxed wines to see which one is the best. To start, I narrowed down this search for boxed wine to only include red wine, which is consistently the most Googled wine across the United States, according to a Google Trends search. Then, once I was at the liquor store, I tried to pick options that I knew would be readily available in most grocery stores. After gathering a few friendsbecause who wants to drink aloneI broke open the boxes and we started tasting.

This is the official ranking of seven of the most popular boxed red wines. If you prefer a canned wine, weve got a list of the 17 best canned-wine brands that you should try. Cheers!

Where In California Is The Wine Country

The Californian wine country is in the North San Francisco Bay area, with over 800 wineries located all along this scenic route. The Bay area encompasses some of the world’s most famous wine regions, including Napa Valley and Sonoma.

The success of these famous regions within the Bay area is largely to do with the sound soil composition and ideal climatic conditions. Each region is fortunate to have a wide range of temperatures and soil types, allowing the brilliant variety of grapes to thrive here.

And A Few Disadvantages

Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon Red Wine

Boxed wine has a sell-by date. While bag-in-box wine has an impressive shelf life after it has been opened, its longevity is limited before opening. The big issue with bag-in-box wine is that as a container, it doesnt keep oxygen out as well as glass bottles, says Andrew Waterhouse, PhD, a wine chemist and the director of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at the University of California, Davis. The plastic is designed to absorb oxygen, but that only lasts for a few months. Basically, after six months, the wine will start oxidizing pretty quickly. Youll know its oxidized if the wine has a distinctly nutty flavor, rather like sherry, he says.

Dont plan to age your boxed wine, Waterhouse advises, and check the sell-by date when you purchase.

Forget about boxed Champagne. Most champagnes and other traditional sparkling wines, like cava and prosecco, require strong packaging that can handle the pressure of carbonization. You cant do sparkling wine in a box, Waterhouse says. No way could those bags hold the pressure. Very lightly fizzy wines, like some moscatos, may work in a bag, he says. Otherwise, this is a category thats best in a bottle or a can.

This doesnt mean you cant get boxed wine in a richer style. Case in point, the malbec we evaluated and enjoyed. Its just less common, so youll have to look harder for the good stuff.

How Did They Create Black Box The Best Box Wein

But I really wanted to see the field beyond frizia in these days. I tried too much wee in a box, and now I hear words like tannins and body and a beautiful asskarton.because these countries are not in high demand, they can get delicious wine at a reasonable price, he says. The garnacha I tried, was rich and complex, especially for wein in box. It is also a good choice for grills: the viticultor points out that it is well combined with grilled vegetables, pizza and even burgers. Consumers can find doses in a variety of sizes, from 187ml to 500ml, and styles, including some non-traditional options.

San mayhem ferments white wines with ingredients such as minze and ingwer, or ages them with hot paprika, and sometimes adds carbon into the tank. Andrew jones, the pinot noir and chardonnay produced under its alloy wine label, experimented with unconventional projects such as a pink wine splash mixed with zitrus and hopping. With some of the things I do, I try to get handmade beer in wein, he says. The best way to let any red wine breathe is to pour it into the cups or to leave it in a crawl and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. This will nourish the wein so that it open and release so aromen and rich aromen. And finally, but not least, the wein in box has a lower carbon footprint than conventional glass bottles.

A Million And One Advantages Of Boxed Wines

It lasts a long time once opened. Industry professionals have a more accurate term for boxed wine: bag-in-box. Most boxed wines actually come in a plastic pouch with a polyester outer layer. The bag is filled under vacuum, so theres no air in it. This bag shrinks as you pour the wine from the spout, which keeps the wine fresher much longer than wine in a bottle, which of course stays the same size no matter how much wine youve drunk from it.

Most 3-liter boxes will stay good for up to six weeks after theyve been opened, says Chris Leon, owner of the Brooklyn, N.Y., wine shop Leon & Son. A box is the ideal option for someone who wants merely a splash of wine here and there, he says. I even know some wine professionals who will keep a box in the fridge for when they just want a quick glass.

This applies only to bag-in-box wines, from which you pour via a spout, though. Bandit, which makes the pinot grigio that we tried, sells its wine in Tetra Paks, a multilayered, shelf-stable packaging that brings to mind plant milks . Like with a bottle of wine, air replaces wine as the juice is pouredso while Tetra Pak wines are shelf-stable prior to opening, they need to be consumed within a few days of cracking the seal.

This is partly because glass is more expensive, he says. Its also more difficult to ship: Glass is much heavier than plastic and cardboard, and takes up more space than a box, which can be stacked without any space in between parcels.

    Firstleaf Delivery And Packaging

Firstleaf ships everywhere in the U.S. except for Utah, Mississippi, and Rhode Island due to state regulations. First orders typically arrive a couple days after theyre placed. When I opened my box, it was extremely secure with thick cardboard dividers, almost like an egg carton, nesting each bottle to avoid breakage. The packaging was also easy to disassemble and recycle. Deliveries occur once a month and dont require any refrigeration, although Id recommend placing white wines in the fridge an hour before consumption for a better tasting experience.

Bota Box Wines Ranked Worst To Best

Back in the day, boxed wine was known for having a notoriously bad taste. It was something to be avoided in most cases, and so glass bottles were much preferred by the discerning wine enthusiast. However, these days, the tide has turned. More and more people are realizing that there are actually some quality boxed wines out there. And not only are they often cheaper than many alternatives, but they also stay good for longer. That’s perfect for people who live alone or who don’t tend to drink too regularly. And of course, turning up to a party with a box of wine is probably going to win you automatic popularity points.

While there are several great boxed wine brands out there, one of our favorites is Bota Box. This brand offers a slew of different types of wine and tends to be pretty widely available. Are they making the most interesting, revolutionary wine out there? Well, no, not exactly. But are they making quality standard wines that just about everyone will enjoy sipping? Absolutely yes.

That’s why we’ve decided to take a closer look at the brand and rank their wines from worst to best. We started out with our least favorites and worked our way to the ones we think are best of the Bota Box brand. But while you can use our ranking as a guide, know that you should definitely try them out for yourself.

La Vieille Ferme White Wine France 3l

My favorite of the three La Vieille Ferme box wines I sampled, the white wine has a pale gold color, a tropical fruit nose, notes of underripe banana and hints of pineapple, and a chalky kind of mineral character, with good acid on a mouth-coating finish. Also look out for the boxed rosé, which has a pale salmon pink color, and is quite simple and clean with strawberry, white peach, and prickly pear notes, and subtle Mediterranean herb notes. And the red boxed wine is worth trying, too. Deep ruby-purple color, this wine is quite soft, with mouth-coating tannins, subtle red berry and earthy aromas, and a spicy finish.

Finally, the red sangria is good too, with its notes of tangy, candied red berry fruit and brown spices. Serve it over ice with cut pieces of peach, plum, pear, and apple.

Out of Washington states Columbia Valley comes this organically-produced red blend from Badger Mountain, curated by their head winemaker Jose Mendozano relation to the South American city.

    Are There Any Drawbacks

Even though BIB wine has a longer shelf life than a bottle, it will go off eventually, so keep in mind that a three-litre box is the equivalent of 20 glasses of wine. People who get bored with the same food and drink night after night should think carefully about committing to the same wine for an entire month.

Its also perhaps a little too easy to keep going back to the box for a refill. Opening a second bottle of wine is a decision mindlessly tapping the box for another splash could easily become habit-forming.

How To Find The Best Bottles Of Low

There are a few key specifications you can look for to identify low-carb wine.

    • Alcohol by volume : The alcohol level is required to be listed, and can be found on the bottle as ABV,or alcohol by volume. For a low-carb wine, aim for 13 percent or less.
    • Residual sugars: Low-sugar wines are naturally low in carbs because sugar is a type of carb. Finding residual sugars can be a bit more challenging to decipher compared to ABV. The metric most likely will be listed on a wines website on the tech sheet . Low-carb wines will have less than 10 grams per liter .
    • Dry taste: Even if you cant find the exact amount of residual sugars, you can use your taste buds as a guide to find low-carb wines. Wines range from bone dry to very sweet, and those on the drier end naturally contain less sugar.

The drier the wine, the lower the sugar content. Varieties like Champagne, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot grigio, merlot, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, and Malbec generally contain somewhere between 2 to 4 grams of carbs per 5-ounce glass, says Lauren Harris-Pincus, MS, RDN, founder of NutritionStarringYOU.com and author of The Protein-Packed Breakfast Club.

Sweeter wines like port, moscato, plum, and other dessert wines will contain much more sugar, so if you are seeking a low-carb wine, those are probably not your best choices.

The greatest attribute of Sideways is that it promoted Pinot Noir, which became very popular because of the movie.

The region of Santa Barbara offers a great variety of unique tasting options with over 120 different wineries to choose from. This region is off-the-beaten-track, but should not be underestimated. Sideways drew much-needed attention to this region and all that it has to offer.

This red wine from Espiga is great for heartier cold-weather fare and barbecue. While a bit heavy in terms of mouthfeel, theres obvious red and black fruit and a bit of leather and spice. Its good enough to be the house red at many restaurants, at least during happy hour. And if winter drags, use it as a great base for mulled wine.
