How To Pick The Best Non Alcoholic Wine

Well for me picking the best was easy enough. I wanted something that actually looked, tasted and felt like wine. I didnt necessarily want to try a genetically modified form of grape juice. In doing the research to write this post, I discovered that the number of options out there is fantastic. How ill informed I must have been. There were non alcoholic beers and red wines and white wines, even non alcoholic champagne. How needs Dom Perignon when youve got alcohol free champagne.

Well, the truth is I cant tell you how to pick the best non alcoholic wine just like I cant tell you what wine is best. What I would start by saying is know your palate. Chances are if youre reading something like this, you probably know if you like sweet things, or slightly acidic things, neutral, fruity, rich, dense, light, etc Think about what you like and work backwards.

You could be drinking non alcoholic wine because you dont drink, or you cant or youre simply curious, as I was, to learn more either way, theres an array of options out there, where theres something for everyone.

Non Alcoholic Mulled Wine Recipe Ingredients

Non
  • Grape Juice I recommend Welchs 100% red grape juice, but purple will work as well. One 46 oz bottle of grape juice will be enough for 8 people. If you are having a larger party or holiday gathering, simply double the recipe use the slider bar on the recipe card to make the math oh-so-easy!
  • Orange Fresh sliced orange gives it that extra special touch and pop of beautiful orange slices. The winter citrus is also perfect this time of year!
  • Star Anise The subtle licorice flavor complements the sweet grape juice so well. And I just love seeing those stars float around the surface of the hot Christmas drink.
  • Cinnamon Sticks A warming spice that sings all things holiday. It is such a classic and kids love it, too!

I am so impressed with this non alcoholic red wine! And I think this would top my list currently for the best non alcoholic red wine that actually tastes like wine! Id say the oak aging of the wine definitely helps give it that real wine taste.

Maybe also the cork closure helps impart some flavour, it also could be because I sipped it out of my brand new Riedel WineWings Cabernet Sauvignon glass that I was kindly gifted. Who knows, however the bottle was emptied and we bought a 2nd bottle!

The wine hails from America, California to be exact and the alcohol is removed by alcohol gentle cold filtration. It is low in sugar and can be cellared for up to 3 years!

Can zero-alcohol wine really taste like the real thing?

When researching the best non-alcoholic wines, we looked for products that genuinely rival standard wine for complexity and satisfaction. Its true that low-alcohol wine can struggle to replicate the thick mouthfeel and long finish you might expect from a good full-alcohol wine, but things have improved fast in recent years as winemakers race to create the best products.

Low-alcohol booze is big business, and established winemakers including Adnams and Hardys are building ranges of low and no-alcohol wines. Weve also seen the rise of dedicated alcohol-free winemakers, following in the footsteps of German pioneer Carl Jung . Now theres Eisberg in Germany, Thomson & Scott and Belle & Co in the UK, and Richard Juhlin in Sweden. Were happy to recommend wines from all these specialists in our list below.

Low-alcohol or alcohol-free whats the difference?

A trace amount of alcohol, even 0.2%, makes it easier for winemakers to replicate the complex flavours, dryness and mouthfeel of their full-strength counterparts. That compares with around 15% for a standard Sauvignon Blanc. So if youre not teetotal, it may be worth trying low-alcohol wine and getting used to the difference, rather than going straight for alcohol-free and being put off by the experience. Weve included a separate list of low-alcohol recommendations below.

How To Select The Best Nonalcoholic Wine

Keeping your edge doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice flavor.

These days, a lot of people are giving up drinking alcohol in favor of self-care. As the sober-curious movement has gained traction, more and more people are looking for alcohol-free beverages, and wine producers are taking note. I personally haven’t had any alcohol in a few years and I’m eager to see what people are coming up with for wine alternatives.

Usually, I’m good if a Spindrift or La Croix is available, but I miss having a glass of wine to go with my meal, so having the option of a non-alcoholic red to go with dinner is appealing. But trying to figure out how to pick a drink that’s traditionally made with alcohol is a bit of a puzzle.

EatingWell’s test kitchen manager, Breana Killeen, happens to be a sommelier and tells me there are two kinds of beverages categorized as nonalcoholic wines. One is made like regular wine by fermenting grape juice with yeast then the alcohol is gently removed from the wine either by distillation or filtration. The other method bypasses fermentation and adds carbonation to the wine to make something like a sparkling wine. She says, “Both can be tasty but the most important feature to look for are wines that are labeled dry so you aren’t just drinking sweet juice.”

Sparkling Wine: Sparkling Gold Vinada

via amazon.com

Of the non-alcoholic wines I tried, the sparkling varieties were best. The effervescence helps trick the tongue and make up for the lack of alcohol. Perhaps manufacturers are also better at mimicking a prosecco or brut than a pinot gris or cabernet sauvignon.

Whatever the reason, Sparkling Gold Vinada is the perfect non-alcoholic bottle of bubbly. This sparkling wine from La Mancha, Spain, is crisp and lightly acidic. Its a well-balanced sparkling wineideal for sipping on summer afternoons or popping open on the weekends with a supper of lean fish. Note that though Sparkling Gold Vinada doesnt contain alcohol, it does contain sulfites.

Price: $11 from, Sans Drinks, Dan Murphys and Woolworths

For a sparkling wine, I was actually quite impressed with this zero alcohol bubbles. Its easy to consume and on the dry spectrum, so if youre not a sweet tooth, it means you can have a few glasses and let the bubbles sans alcohol go to your head. Think crisp citrus, pears and apples with a nice vibrant fizz. Though for the pregnant wine-lovers, watch out, it can increase the gassiness!

  • Each wine comes in at less than 0.5% ABV . This is about the same as an overripe banana and nowhere near enough to make you drunk.

Le Petit Chavin Rose Non

A good bottle of rose wine is a staple of any summer. Those after a lighter option or those keen to keep a clear head with a non-alcoholic take on this easy-drinking essential could do a lot worse than La Petit Chavin Rose.

If youre tired of rose bearing a pitiful hue barely worth the name, La Petit Chavin will revive your passion for this fruity member of the wine family. Here, the flavour is a decidedly balanced offering, with freshness and smoothness dancing a delicate tandem for terrific results.

With all those high notes to enjoy, youd be forgiven for forgetting youre dealing with a non-alcoholic wine here. On that note, theres nothing to dread about that, even for the more discerning connoisseur of rose and summer reds.
