Be Specific About The Bottle Type

A Bordeaux bottle is different from a Riesling bottle which is different from a Champagne bottle. You can absolutely sell a mixed box, but since youll probably be selling in smaller quantities than corks you should get specific as to exactly what you have. Good news: unlike their corks, Champagne bottles do sell!

More wine closures may pop up, or out, of your bottle.

Vinoseal: Also known as Vinolok, this elegant, expensive glass stopper was developed by the Alcoa Corporation, but later handed over to Czech glass producer Preciosa. It was released in the European market in 2003. The glass is ringed with plastic to create a tight seal.

Helix: A twist-off cork that requires no corkscrew, created in 2016 by the worlds largest Portuguese cork manufacturer, Amorim, and the worlds largest glass-bottle manufacturer, Owens-Illinois Inc.

Crown cap: The cap of choice for beer bottles, this closure is used by traditional-method sparkling producers to seal their bubbles before disgorging, thanks to the crown caps ability to contain pressure. These bottlings are later resealed with cork, wire cage and foil. Many pétillantnaturel producers who dont disgorge choose to release their sparklers in all their crown-capped glory. Some still wines, particularly those in the natural camp, are even starting to flaunt the crown cap seal.

Great Questions About Bottling Homemade Wine

50 Used Natural Wine Corks for Craft Projects in 2020 ...
  • The cork does not seal tightly enough along the whole length of its side. As the barrel opening flares out, the resistance against the side of the cork becomes less and less.
  • Because of this flaring and uneven resistance, it can actually entice the wine cork stopper to pull down into the bottle. Ive seen this happen more than once. Think of squeezing a marble between your fingers. If you dont squeeze it evenly or to one side, it pops out. This is the same effect that can happen when corking a screw-cap bottle that has a flared barrel.

What Is Cork And Why Is It Used To Close Wine Bottles

Unless you drink boxed wine to the exclusion of all others, cork has played a role in your wine journey. Whether getting the reputation as a world-class cork breaker sent you running for screw caps, or hearing the delightful pop! transformed you into a wine enthusiast, your wine memories involve at least a little cork. But cork is more than the recalcitrant barrier between you and your booze. Its a critical element of winemaking history and a fascinating organism to boot. And though new advances in winemaking technology mean that screw caps and artificial corks can work as well as the natural stuff, cork trees and their history are critically important, especially as climate change affects wine regions, growing seasons, and life cycles globally.

Though cork harvesting has been a practice since the ancient Greeks, it wasnt used in glass wine bottles until much more recently. Like wine, cork comes from a living, breathing organism: Quercus suber, or the cork oak. Amidst the frenzied yearly cycle of the wine industry, these evergreen oaks move like sloths, slowly expanding and growing the bark, known as orange cork. With an average lifespan of 200 years, each tree can provide thousands of bottle stoppers when cared for properly.

    Wine Cork & Wine Corkers

When browsing MoreWine!’s selection of wine corks, it may be difficult to know which one is best for your particular wine. Choosing the correct cork comes down to two factors: how long the wine will be in the bottle before it gets consumed, and economics. If you will be bottling a simple, fruity wine that will be drunk within a year, then you probably don’t need a wine cork that is rated for 15 -20 years . On the other hand, if you have made a wine that you will be appreciating for the next 5-10 years then it doesn’t make sense to close that bottle with a wine cork that is only rated for 1 year, either! When choosing your cork, therefore, the goal is to strike a balance between the projected lifespan of the wine and how much you need to spend to ensure the wine is protected for this duration. Years rated for:

    • Aglica* wine corks are rated for around 1 year.
    • Synthetic* and Agglomerated* “1+1” wine corks are rated for around 2 years.
    • Grade 3 natural wine corks are rated for 5-10 years.
    • Grade 2 natural wine corks are rated for 5-15 years
    • Grade 1 natural wine corks are rated for 5-20 years

First Class Mail Should Be Sufficient

When I sell on eBay, I offer the cheapest shipping option available usually First Class Mail, which has a weight limit of 13 ounces. This shouldnt be a problem when shipping corks, unless its a large quantity. With First Class, you have to pay for tracking separately and its definitely worth the extra dollar.

On that note, you can also sell your old wine bottles if you have them lying around. My empty wine bottles usually go in the recycling bin shortly after they meet their end, but if you have the space to keep the bottles until they sell, here are some tips for listing those:

    Using A Coravin Wine Opener

How to use Coravin wine openers correctly:

Coravin wine openers are built with ease-of-use in mind. The Coravin wine opening system is a simple three-step process: insert, tip, and pour.

Before the first use of your unit, push the clamp release up and slide the Coravin SmartClamp all the way up. Then, twist the capsule cup off of the unit. Drop the Coravin capsule into the unit, round end first. Twist the cup back onto the unit until it is securely in place. Before each use, it is recommended that you press the trigger quickly to clear the system of any wine residue or air.

To use the Coravin system, align the SmartClamp with the neck of the bottle and push down firmly in one smooth motion, until the Coravins needle is fully inserted. With one hand on the bottle and the other on the handle, tip the bottle until the Coravin spout is lower than the base. Press and release the trigger quickly to pour your desired amount of wine into the glass. To stop the flow of wine, return the bottle to an upright position. When you are done with the Coravin, grasp the handle with one hand and the bottle with the other. Pull the Coravin out of the bottle with one fluid motion.

How do I use the Coravin screw cap accessory?

If I get a small dripping from a bottle on its side after drawing a glass, am I doing something wrong?

Nope! As a cork re-seals after the Coravin needle has been removed, some trace amounts of wine may be pushed to the surface of the cork. This is completely normal.
