Austin Hope wines have been on my radar for quite some time, mainly at restaurants and a few times at a wine bar, and Im glad I finally have them at Costco. At $45, this is not an inexpensive purchase. The price of this wine is 99 cents, so it is most likely to be found in that price range.
Austin Hope Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
It is with great pride and excitement that we have crafted our third release of the Austin Hope Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Through our extended Barrel aging process, this wine has developed unprecedented structure and character.
The making of Austin Hope Reserve Cabernet begins with small lot fermentations separated by individual vineyard blocks which receive daily pump-overs for maximum extraction. These lots are constantly supervised, tasted & analyzed for tannin and anthocyanins in order to determine optimal length of extended maceration after fermentation. Once drained and pressed, the young wines are barreled down into a combination of once used and neutral French Oak. In fall of 2020, the lots were blended together and continued barrel aging in 75% new French Oak. Just before bottling the 2019 Austin Hope Cabernet, the winemaking team tasted and selected individual barrels that displayed exceptional quality and character. These barrels were combined together to form the Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. After an additional 6 months of ageing in 100% new French Oak, the wine was then bottled in late spring of 2021.

Facts About Austin Hope Wine
Austin Hope wine is a cut above the rest. Although they make several different wines, they have a luxurious red wine called the Austin Hope Paso Robles Cabernet that is reasonably priced and high-quality. It is made with care and matured through a rigorous aging process in French oak barrels.
Since they arrived in Paso Robles over thirty years ago, the Hope family has been farming in the rich oak-studded and rolling terrain. They began by farming apples and grapes, but presently concentrate on mature vineyards.
The Hope family has vineyards with several grape varietals, including Grenache, Mourvedre, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although, the Hope family no longer farms apple orchards, they the grape vine density has increased. The quality of the vines is clearly expressed in the quality of wines generated from the grapes.
Besides Austin Hope Paso Robles wine, the Hope family wines also boasts other brands like Troublemaker, Quest, Treana, and Liberty School.
Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon
As Paso Robles, California has soared in number of wineries and gained in popularity, Cabernet Sauvignon has firmly taken root as the regions number one varietal. Alone, it accounts for just over 40% of plantings and is grown throughout both the western and eastern sides of the appellation. Though viticulture here dates back to the 18th century, Cabernet Sauvignon didnt emerge as a significant grape here until the 1970s. But since then it has definitely made up for lost time.
Legendary winemaker and consultant Andre Tchelistcheff first recognized Pasos potential with Cabernet Sauvignon in the early 1960s. The calcareous soil and dramatic diurnal temperature changes of Pasos westside particularly intrigued him. Today modern winemaking techniques and focused experimentation with various clones, rootstocks and vineyard strategies optimize the region’s ideal combination of soil and climate to deliver the best fruit possible.
The results are evident in the glass. Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon can be mesmerizing, with rich aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, graphite, toasty oak, vanilla and spice. The structure, balance and unbridled opulence of these wines impress from first sip to last. Not surprisingly, Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignons have steadily grown in reputation, not just in the U.S., but around the world.

Hope Family Wines Paso Robles Roots Run Deep
Austin Hope of Hope Family Wines credits three people for helping and encouraging him on his path: his father Chuck Hope, his uncle Paul, and famed Napa Valley winemaker Chuck Wagner. It was Austins father Chuck who moved their family from Bakersfield to Paso Robles, California in 1978 when Austin was only eight. Seeking both a change of scenery and a career, Chuck and his wife Marlyn bought the property where Austin still lives today. They started out farming grapes and apples with marginal success farming always has its challenges but discovered that the Paso region was ideal for growing grapes, so they leaned into those efforts and their hard work eventually paid off.
According to Austin, he was a bit of a troublemaker as a kid, and as punishment, he was sent out to work the fields. There, he discovered that farming wasnt a chore at all. In fact, Austin discovered that he much preferred being on the ranch over spending time in school and spent plenty of time playing, then eventually working in the vineyard alongside his father during the 80s and 90s as they expanded their winegrape operation.
While Austin pays homage to his dad and uncle for instilling the values of hard work and perseverance, and to Chuck Wagner for teaching him how to make world class wine, he also acknowledges that much of his success can be attributed to his dedicated team. Austin understands that producing great wine is a labor of love which requires many hands.

Premier Grapes Make Premier Wine
The only estate wines on the 40 acres of Hope Family Wines vineyards are Rhône varietals. They source other grapes from more than 50 growers in the region, many of whom have been growing grapes for the Hopes for three decades. These long term relationships have allowed the Hope family to select their own clones and rootstocks so they can secure the right kind of fruit for their labels.
Admirably, Hope Family Wines now requires all of the vineyards where they source grapes to be certified sustainable. They firmly believe that this not only benefits the environment, but also has positive effects on the vineyards and the community, which protects the future of winemaking in Paso Robles.

Austin Hopes Cabernet Stands Among The Worlds Best Wines
California-based Hope Family Wines consists of five brands, but one, Austin Hope, is truly the standout.
Austin’s Hope’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon was named No. 10 of the World’s Top 100 by Wine Enthusiast. It was the first time in the magazine’s three decades of rankings that a wine from Paso Robles made the Top 10.

Hope says the label has evolved in many ways.
“When I first created the label, I was really focused on Rhone varietals, because that is what grows best on our estate vineyard in the Templeton Gap district,” he says. “Cabernet has always been the lifeblood of our company because of our Liberty School label. But, with the Austin Hope label, the mission was clear: Create the standard for luxury Paso Robles cabernet.”
The label’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon sells for $56 on the winery’s website. Most other Austin Hope wines, including its 2019 Chardonnay, 2016 Mourvédre, 2016 Grenache, 2017 Syrah and 2017 Mourvédre Syrah, sell for $47-$65.

What Are The Austin Hope Winemaking Notes
Austin Hope’s winemaking process is reflective of the outstanding wine products they offer. After harvesting, Cabernet Sauvignon is fermented separately from other grapes for a minimum of 11 months. It is then put in a range of oak barrels for aging. Firstly, it is matured in French oak barrels that are 10% new, 25% once used, and 65% two to three times used. The blend is then further aged at least three more months in 75% new and 25% once used French oak barrels. With the 2020 vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon wines were aged in oak for about twenty months total and racked twice in the process. The final maturation was then done to give the wine a gentle cross-flow filtration. The wine was then bottled in January 2020.

At Hope Family Wines Teamwork Makes The Dream Work
Many of Austins employees have been working alongside him for at least a decade, and some for longer, and have become more like part of the family. Austins high school friend, Jason JC Diefenderfer, joined the winemaking team in 1998 and apprenticed under then-winemaker Chris Phelps. He became the Assistant Winemaker for Liberty School in 1999 and Winemaker in 2006, and is now Director of Winemaking. Gretchen Roddick, General Manager, has been on the team for over 20 years, and Assistant Winemaker Samantha Taylor joined the team over 12 years ago. Samantha got her start in the tasting room, but soon realized that she wanted to learn more about the process of making wine and worked her way up. Most recently, she spearheaded a unique wine + cheese tasting experience with Cambria-based Stepladder Creamery.
