A few weeks ago I wrote about whether it is a good idea to drink alcohol on a low carb diet. I mentioned various kinds of alcoholic drinks and their carb content for a typical serving. White wine is definitely not one of the worst offenders, but you can reduce the carb content further by mixing it with zero carb soda. It makes a longer drink, and for half the carbs of a regular glass of wine!
If you have fresh lime, you could squeeze some lime juice and add a twist of peel or a slice of lime to the drink. Or, if speed is of the essence, using bottled lime juice is just fine!

How Much Sugar Is Actually In Wine
In order to determine how much sugar is in your wine, look to sweetness. People often mistake fruitiness for sweetness, but these two tasting characteristics are very different. Even though you might smell fruity aromas, the wine would still be dry based on its residual sugar content.
Lets get one thing established without sugar, there is no wine. Seriously. Grapes contain naturally occurring sugars which are consumed by yeast and converted to alcohol during the fermentation process. Fermentation is complete once the desired sugar level is reached which, for many wines, is when they get to fully dry at 0° Brix. But you may have heard the term residual sugar. This is any leftover sugar that remains post fermentation and is measured in grams per liter. So if you consider that most dry wines have very few grams of RS per the entire liter then it might be a shocker to see other beverages and foods reaching 25 grams or more per serving!
For sweeter dessert wines, winemakers stop the fermentation process earlier, leaving more residual sugar that the yeast hasnt yet converted to alcohol. This leaves a sweeter style wine with lower alcohol content.
On the flip side, dry wines ferment much longer, leaving little residual sugar and higher alcohol content.
A dry wine typically has less than 10 grams of residual sugar per liter often 3 grams or under. A sweet or dessert wine has more than 30 grams per liter. Most wines in between would be characterized as off-dry.
How Much Sugar In A Bottle Of Red Wine
A bottle of red wine contains about 4.64 grams of sugar according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is still only about 1/5th to 1/9th the daily recommended amount.
Red wine’s benefits clearly outweigh its sugar content. Even drinking a full bottle of wine would give you only 1/3rd the amount of sugar in a single glass of soda. I always feel so classy when I drink champagne. Not because I swill expensive bottles of bubbly, but because I drink it so rarely compared to wine. Per our Maker wine terms glossary, grape juice becomes wine when all the natural sugars from the fruit are eaten up by yeast and converted to alcohol and C02 through a process called fermentation. In a dry wine, fermentation has been allowed to complete fully, and there is no residual sugar left in the wine.
Even more confusingly, just because we perceive a wine as sweet, does not necessarily mean it isnt a dry wine! Ripe fruits and floral notes can create the perception of sweetness even if there is no residual sugar, especially if the wine doesnt have the acidity or tannins to balance that fruitiness.
And what should you call that drying sensation in your mouth with some wines? Fun fact, thats actually caused by tannins, which are naturally occurring compounds from grape seeds and skins.

While there is technically no such thing as sugar-free wine since all alcohol is derived from sugar, there are wines that exist without any added sugars.
