A few weeks ago I wrote about whether it is a good idea to drink alcohol on a low carb diet. I mentioned various kinds of alcoholic drinks and their carb content for a typical serving. White wine is definitely not one of the worst offenders, but you can reduce the carb content further by mixing it with zero carb soda. It makes a longer drink, and for half the carbs of a regular glass of wine!

If you have fresh lime, you could squeeze some lime juice and add a twist of peel or a slice of lime to the drink. Or, if speed is of the essence, using bottled lime juice is just fine!

How Much Sugar Is Actually In Wine

In order to determine how much sugar is in your wine, look to sweetness. People often mistake fruitiness for sweetness, but these two tasting characteristics are very different. Even though you might smell fruity aromas, the wine would still be dry based on its residual sugar content.

Lets get one thing established without sugar, there is no wine. Seriously. Grapes contain naturally occurring sugars which are consumed by yeast and converted to alcohol during the fermentation process. Fermentation is complete once the desired sugar level is reached which, for many wines, is when they get to fully dry at 0° Brix. But you may have heard the term residual sugar. This is any leftover sugar that remains post fermentation and is measured in grams per liter. So if you consider that most dry wines have very few grams of RS per the entire liter then it might be a shocker to see other beverages and foods reaching 25 grams or more per serving!

For sweeter dessert wines, winemakers stop the fermentation process earlier, leaving more residual sugar that the yeast hasnt yet converted to alcohol. This leaves a sweeter style wine with lower alcohol content.

On the flip side, dry wines ferment much longer, leaving little residual sugar and higher alcohol content.

A dry wine typically has less than 10 grams of residual sugar per liter often 3 grams or under. A sweet or dessert wine has more than 30 grams per liter. Most wines in between would be characterized as off-dry.

How Much Sugar In A Bottle Of Red Wine

20 Low

A bottle of red wine contains about 4.64 grams of sugar according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is still only about 1/5th to 1/9th the daily recommended amount.

Red wine’s benefits clearly outweigh its sugar content. Even drinking a full bottle of wine would give you only 1/3rd the amount of sugar in a single glass of soda. We can’t say the same about the alcohol content though. Make sure to also pick up one of the best wine aerators or best wine decanters on the market to maximize your drinking enjoyment.

Champagne Vs Wine: Which Is Healthier

I always feel so classy when I drink champagne. Not because I swill expensive bottles of bubbly, but because I drink it so rarely compared to wine. Now Im a big proponent of drinking red wine for the cardio-vascular benefits. I dont overdo it, but Im known to enjoy a glass pretty much daily with dinner.

However, many recent studies put my penchant for red vintages to shame. It would seem that many food scientists are raising a glass in toast to the many health benefits of champagne and sparkling winesince most bubbly is made with both red and white grapes. So lets compare, which is healthier champagne or wine?

What Is Dry Wine Anyways

Dry is often misused as a wine descriptor it does not refer to a wine that is drying. A dry wine is on the opposite end of the spectrum to a sweet wine, its a wine with no residual sugar. Per our Maker wine terms glossary, grape juice becomes wine when all the natural sugars from the fruit are eaten up by yeast and converted to alcohol and C02 through a process called fermentation. In a dry wine, fermentation has been allowed to complete fully, and there is no residual sugar left in the wine.

Even more confusingly, just because we perceive a wine as sweet, does not necessarily mean it isnt a dry wine! Ripe fruits and floral notes can create the perception of sweetness even if there is no residual sugar, especially if the wine doesnt have the acidity or tannins to balance that fruitiness.

And what should you call that drying sensation in your mouth with some wines? Fun fact, thats actually caused by tannins, which are naturally occurring compounds from grape seeds and skins.

When It Comes To Dry Red Wines Stick To Small Producers

Mega wine producers use more sugar and unnatural ingredients in the wine to create volume and make for sweeter, more approachable wines. Small producers, however, are much more likely to use a natural winemaking process and no added sugar.

At Maker we work with small, independent wine producers that take pride in their premium wines. Heres the 101 on how we find world-class winemakers to partner with.

So next time you’re scanning the shelves looking for a dry red wine, look for wines with less than 3 g/l residual sugar, some of the dry red wine varietals listed above, or best of all, small, premium, producers.

Understanding Sugar Levels In Wine

Wines that are low in sugar

Now that you know the bad news about consuming too much sugar, we have some good news: You don’t have to take wine off the table. While there is technically no such thing as sugar-free wine since all alcohol is derived from sugar, there are wines that exist without any added sugars. Case in point: Usual Wines, which have zero added sugars, additives, chemicals, or sulfites.

There are several factors that affect the sugar content in wine, including when the grapes are harvested and how long they’re allowed to ferment. For example, varietals like Riesling, Chenin Blanc, and Sémillon are often left on the vine longer , which results in a riper, sweeter, and raisinated wine grape with more concentrated sugar levels.

The fermentation process is another factor that directly affects the sugar content in wine. As you may have learned in our guide to winemaking, fermentation is the most critical part of wine production.

During this process, naturally occurring sugars are converted into carbon dioxide and ethyl alcohol. If fermentation is halted before all the sugars are converted into alcohol, the result is a sweeter wine with more residual sugar. If the fermentation process is allowed to run its course, there will be less sugar, resulting in a drier wine.

Good To Know: Usual Wines are made the Old-World way, in small batches from sustainably farmed grapes with minimal intervention and absolutely no added sugars or other additives.

Whats The Difference Between Red And White Wine

The main difference between white and red wine has to do with the color of the grapes used. It also has to do with whether the grape juice is fermented with or without the grape skin.

To make white wine, grapes are pressed and skins, seeds and stems are removed before fermentation.

However, to make red wine, the crushed red grapes are transferred to vats directly and they ferment with the skin, seeds and stems. The grape skins lend the wine its pigment, as well as many of the distinctive health compounds found in red wine.

As a result of steeping with the grape skins, red wine is particularly rich in plant compounds that are present in those skins, such as tannins and resveratrol (

Most wine labels don’t list nutrition facts like sugar, carbs, and calories, so it can be tricky to figure out which are considered low-carb or low-sugar wines. A good rule of thumb is to look at the ABV and residual sugar in wine. As either one goes up, so do the calories and carbs, says Josh Fritsche, production winemaker at William Chris Vineyards.
