What I don’t think people fully understand yet is that truly “clean” wine is more than just using organic grapes. You can grow organic grapes and then still throw a bunch of junk in the wine while it’s fermenting or being bottled.

CD: Short answer: no. A wine brand can claim to be “clean” or “natural” without having to back it up. There’s no regulation. However, there are certifications to look for, and those can’t be faked. It varies by country, and even region, so a little research is needed on the part of the consumer. Our wines are certified by region in Italy, and they take those certifications very seriously.
What are some additives that are commonly found in wine?
MF: Wine can include additives and chemicals to achieve desired colors and tastes, and to fix and stabilize the wine. Many winemakers use a chalk-like substance to balance the pH, and malic and tartaric acid to balance the acids. Regular wines are mulched with oak chips to give the wine an oak aroma and taste similar to wine fermented and aged in oak. Lots of regular red wines include a dye called Megapurple to unnaturally bump up flavor and color.

The Difference Between Clean Wine And Conventional Wine
So, what’s the difference between clean crafted wine and conventional wine? Would you even notice it at a wine tasting? The difference in a word: less. Less sugar, less additives, and less ingredients no wine lover was ever meant to pronounce.
“But isn’t wine just…grapes and yeast?” you ask? In theory, yes. Unfortunately, any sommelier will warn you that your conventional glass of wine is filled with chemicals. There are over 60 ingredients conventional winemakers can include in their wines, without having to legally disclose as much on their labels.

Lastly, the only sugar you’ll find in clean crafted wine is residual sugar, or sugar found naturally in grapes leftover from the fermentation process.

For a wine to be considered Clean-Crafted, it goes through two rounds of independent lab testing to guarantee that its free of yucky stuff like synthetic pesticides and chemical additives and has fewer than 100 ppm of total sulfites. We also evaluate and review farming and production practices to confirm that they are, in fact, Clean-Crafted.
Trade-marked Clean-Crafted: This is the first sign of BS.
Looks like Scout & Cellar is working on or has trademarked the term Clean-Crafted when it comes to wine. They literally made this term up. The problem is that theyre intending for the term to indicate whats in the bottle and it gives consumers the feeling that there is meaning behind that term. There is not. Producers know exactly what goes into their wines as far as pesticides and additives. This new term is solely marketing lingo trying to clean-wash their wines, similar to the green-washing problem in wine.
The childish language here is just moronic. Im not even going to speak to anything else regarding this companys wine philosophies, as it is an MLM . According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, 99 percent of people in an MLM lose money.

These days, many people are hyper-focused on responsibly sourced food and for good reason. But when it comes to buying wine, many of these concerns how and where it was produced, what went into it, its environmental impact, and morego right out the window. In her book, Wine. All the Time., wine writer Marissa Ross argues that its time we start thinking about wine much like we think about food.
