Delta Is Asking Airlines To Share Their No

CD: Most consumers equate “clean” with “organic” because that’s their frame of reference. I think they are expecting wine that they can feel good about choosing because it’s better for the environment and for their health. What I don’t think people fully understand yet is that truly “clean” wine is more than just using organic grapes. You can grow organic grapes and then still throw a bunch of junk in the wine while it’s fermenting or being bottled.

Is there any way for a consumer to know if a brand is actually delivering on that promise?

CD: Short answer: no. A wine brand can claim to be “clean” or “natural” without having to back it up. There’s no regulation. However, there are certifications to look for, and those can’t be faked. It varies by country, and even region, so a little research is needed on the part of the consumer. Our wines are certified by region in Italy, and they take those certifications very seriously.

What are some additives that are commonly found in wine?

MF: Wine can include additives and chemicals to achieve desired colors and tastes, and to fix and stabilize the wine. Many winemakers use a chalk-like substance to balance the pH, and malic and tartaric acid to balance the acids. Regular wines are mulched with oak chips to give the wine an oak aroma and taste similar to wine fermented and aged in oak. Lots of regular red wines include a dye called Megapurple to unnaturally bump up flavor and color.

Pillar #: Wine Must Be Made With Grapes Grown Without Toxic Pesticides

It begins in the ground, and in the cultivation of healthy soil and healthy fruit. We believe in leaving the land better than we found it, which means we select our pesticides carefully. After all, not all pesticides are as toxic as others. There are safer alternatives out there, like sesame oil, cinnamon oil and diatomaceous earth. When we must use pesticides, we opt for the safer versions, which means atrazine, glyphosate, and the other 170+ commonly used toxic pesticides in the industry have no place at our table. The Difference Between Clean Wine And Conventional Wine

So, what’s the difference between clean crafted wine and conventional wine? Would you even notice it at a wine tasting? The difference in a word: less. Less sugar, less additives, and less ingredients no wine lover was ever meant to pronounce.

“But isn’t wine just…grapes and yeast?” you ask? In theory, yes. Unfortunately, any sommelier will warn you that your conventional glass of wine is filled with chemicals. There are over 60 ingredients conventional winemakers can include in their wines, without having to legally disclose as much on their labels.

These include, but are not limited to, the following:

These additives are left off clean crafted wines. Instead, you’ll find clean crafted varieties are natural wines that allow the grapes to speak for themselves.

While conventional wines use chemicals to enhance the color, aroma, taste, or sweetness of a wine, clean wines are made from yeast and sustainably farmed grapes. Some clean varieties are also organic wine, but thats not a requirement. Lastly, the only sugar you’ll find in clean crafted wine is residual sugar, or sugar found naturally in grapes leftover from the fermentation process.

Why Do You Need To Drink Better Wine

Pin by The Well Cellar on What is Clean

Drinking mass produced wine thats full of chemical additives and poor production practices will aid to the inflammation of your body, making you feel icky. Things like brain fog, feeling ill, and gastro-intestinal problems can all be the result of the sickening chemicals were ingesting. Cut the crap and get the good stuff so that you can confidently sip knowing that the ingredients going into your body arent going against your goals of living younger.

Does Clean Wine Prevent Hangovers

Theres a lot of chatter around the idea that clean wine prevents headaches or hangovers, possibly due its lower levels of sulfites and other additives used in the fields and in processing. On Good Clean Wines website, for example, the company proclaims,we wont let anything pass our lips that we know will make us feel bad, today or tomorrow.

Sipping wine without feeling any negative effects sounds great, but can you really drink clean wine without getting a hangover the next day? There isnt much research to support this.

The amount of alcohol consumed is what causes most hangover symptoms, so drinking clean wine will likely not affect this. said Alissa Rumsey, a registered dietitian and author of Unapologetic Eating.

That said, while you may not be able to avoid a hangover, some believe that there may be some truth to the idea that clean wine may not affect your body in quite the same way as natural.

If these wines do in fact not have the additives which I believe many of them do not its a logical assumption that theyll be easier for your body to process than conventional wines with mega-purple, acidifiers and/or other chemicals, Berrigan said. That said, clean wine is still wine and has alcohol so you can of course become hungover and dehydrated from it.

Pillar #: Wine Must Not Contain More Than 100ppm Of Sulfites

Sulfites are pretty neat, if we do say so ourselves. They’re naturally occurring within grapes, and they help a ton when it comes to preserving freshness and preventing oxidation. It’s flat-out impossible to create wine completely free of sulfites, which is why we include fewer than 100ppm of sulfites in every bottle , inspired by the Demeter®Biodynamic® standard.

The Goopification Of Grapes: Why ‘clean Wine’ Is A Scam

Winemakers dont have to list ingredients which has opened a door for opportunists chasing a piece of the $52.5bn wellness market

Cameron Diaz gives a happy sigh. Im really excited, she says to her friend Katherine Power. On the table are two bottles of their new wine, Avaline, launched mid-July.

We were mad for a while, adds Diaz. You were a little bit more mad than I was. You had some real anger.

Anger? About wine?

When Diaz and Power decided to make their own wine, they discovered theres more to it than fermented grape juice. No transparency, no labelling, says Power, so shocked by what she found, she threw out all her wine.

The pair, speaking on Instagram, say they became determined to make a clean, chemical-free wine and are now, according to their publicist, on a mission to bring transparency to the wine industry.

What Is Clean Wine And Is It Better For You Than Conventional Wine

From wine clubs to store shelves to Instagram feeds, clean wine is popping up all over the place these days, with marketing claims promoting health consciousness, sustainability, transparency in ingredients and more. You may even have a bottle of it in your home right now.

The increasing presence of clean wine from brands like Avaline, Good Clean Wine, FitVine, Scout & Cellar and Wonderful Wine Company have many wondering: What is clean wine? Does it mean other wine is dirty? And should I be drinking clean wine?

It turns out that the answer is pretty complex. Heres what you need to know.

Did You Know About Chemicals And Additives In Wine

Im not just talking about pesticides used in conventional farming practices. Im talking about chemicals used in the wine making process. They dont put it on the label, so how would you know?!? I was not well educated myself and experienced a myriad of issues after drinking wines. Starting in my twenties, I cut Chardonnay out because I would get splitting migraines from half a glass. By 2018, when my sister introduced me to Scout & Cellar, I only drank some Pinot Noir, select Sauvignon Blanc and Sancerre, and a handful of Rosé. I could not tolerate other wines due to reflux and rapid heart palpitations that I experienced.

Thanks so Scout & Cellar, an industry disruptor founded in 2017, we now have a #Clean-Crafted Wine available to ship directly to your door. These wines are farmed organically and made naturally without any dyes, sweeteners, or enzymes to speed up the fermentation process. Personally, these wines have allowed me to reintroduce old varietals that I used to avoid. I love big bold reds again, and I can drink more than one glass of Chardonnay without losing one or two days. Join me in enjoying wine again! Lets leave those chemicals in the pool, not in your wine class!

Dry Farm Wines / The Claim:

The authentic wines we procure are exceptionally interesting and compelling expressions of taste and pleasure. When a wine is alive and free from overreaching modern influence, the wine will whisper in natures perfect logic and design. The wine will express nature joyfully and perfectly.

Chris Miller, Master Sommelier, owner and winemaker at Seabold Cellars, Marina, Calif.:

Well, this statement wins first prize for the most flowery bullshit Ive ever heard without saying a single thing.

Margot Mazur, beverage director, Wild ChildWine Shop, Somerville, Mass.:

These terms are there to paint a picture for a consumer one that is not necessarily an honest reflection of the wineries, or how the wines are made. These are marketing terms used to convince consumers to make that purchase. Supporting small businesses who have done their research and are committed to serving wines without chemicals, wines made by small farmers, wines that tell a story about their culture and history, is the way to go.

Jill Zimorski, Master Sommelier, educator at the American Wine School in Chicago:
Jenn and Brian Patterson, owners, Black Sheep Wine and Spirits, Lisbon, Portugal:

Scout & Cellar / The Claim:

For a wine to be considered Clean-Crafted, it goes through two rounds of independent lab testing to guarantee that its free of yucky stuff like synthetic pesticides and chemical additives and has fewer than 100 ppm of total sulfites. We also evaluate and review farming and production practices to confirm that they are, in fact, Clean-Crafted.

Zimorski:

Trade-marked Clean-Crafted: This is the first sign of BS.

Cohen:

Looks like Scout & Cellar is working on or has trademarked the term Clean-Crafted when it comes to wine. They literally made this term up. The problem is that theyre intending for the term to indicate whats in the bottle and it gives consumers the feeling that there is meaning behind that term. There is not. Producers know exactly what goes into their wines as far as pesticides and additives. This new term is solely marketing lingo trying to clean-wash their wines, similar to the green-washing problem in wine.

Miller:

The childish language here is just moronic. Im not even going to speak to anything else regarding this companys wine philosophies, as it is an MLM . According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, 99 percent of people in an MLM lose money.

Clean Wines Impact On The Environment

These days, many people are hyper-focused on responsibly sourced food and for good reason. But when it comes to buying wine, many of these concerns how and where it was produced, what went into it, its environmental impact, and morego right out the window. In her book, Wine. All the Time., wine writer Marissa Ross argues that its time we start thinking about wine much like we think about food.

Most people dont think about wine like they think about food, but its important that we all start doing so, she writes. Just like precious baby gem lettuces and radicchio, wine is an agricultural product, and mass-produced, commercial wines are often made with grapes grown in the same ways we shun in the produce aisle.

Baia Abuladze ofBaias Wine, a small family-run winery that makes natural wine in the country of Georgia, emphasizes the deep respect to nature involved in making natural wine, as well as the freedom this winemaking technique allows for. Natural wine is truly expressive of the terroir and vineyard itself, she said.

But is clean wine just as sustainable as natural wine? Not exactly. Most clean wine is not produced with the same level of attention to environmental sustainability as natural wine, but it can be a step in the right direction for the environment, especially if made using organic or biodynamic grapes or adhering to other principles that benefit the land, the planet and the people on it.

Clean wine is wine made from natural grapes, without any added sugar, sulfites, or preservatives. You’ll typically find clean crafted wine is harvested from organic or sustainable vineyards, farmed without pesticides or harmful chemicals.

It’s important to note that the term “clean wine” is not regulated by the FDA, and therefore you should expect some variance between clean winemakers. Before buying a clean crafted bottle of wine, do your research to differentiate between a trusted clean wine company, and those who simply have a clever marketing team.

Even with no government-regulated definition to reference, here’s what you can expect from the clean crafted wine industry:

Clean crafted wine who abstain from the use of synthetic pesticides and chemicals. During the winemaking process, clean wine companies allow the grapes to speak for themselves, rather than add sweeteners, sugars, additives, or sulfites. This results in a cleaner wine for you , and less headaches.
