The 8 Best Napa Wine Tours
2/2/2020 | February 2nd, 2020
Napa Valley is easily one of the most famous wine-producing regions in the world, and last year nearly four million people headed there it is big business for Northern California!
Of course, if you plan on spending some time in Napa Valley and nearby Sonoma, youll most likely want to explore some of the 600 wineries in the area. A great way to do this both to get some local, insider knowledge and so that theres no need to drink and drive is to take a Napa wine tour.
There are nearly as many wine tour options as there are vineyards. Ive listed some of my favorites here, and you can decide which fits your style and, more importantly, your budget. Just remember that youll usually also have to pay tasting fees on top of the tour costs these vary between $20 and $40 though many will waive that fee if you buy some wine. Also dont forget, especially if youre coming from outside the United States, that youll need to be 21 or over to join these tours, though some allow children to tag along.
Whats That Bucket For
Most Napa tasting rooms will have buckets out on every counter . These are called Spit Buckets or Dump Buckets , and theyre there for you to toss out the rest of your glass or even your mouthful of wine. And dont worry, its not considered rude!
It may seem counterintuitive to pay for a taste of wine that you just dump out, but if youre a serious wine connoisseur, youll find learn that there are some wines you just dont really like and you dont need another sip of. Spitting is also a great way to taste wine without going way over your limits, and it reduces palate fatigue, too.
Heres a sommelier secret to having your best day of wine tasting: you have to spit. When I visit wine country to find wines for Palate Club, I sometimes spend four hours on the road and taste 100s of wines in a day. If there is not a spit bucket, I ask for one to make sure that I get back to my hotel safely. Its not rude, and its not wasting wine. Most winemakers appreciate it when you pace yourself to stay sober enough to enjoy the wines.
That said, if you have different plans for your weekend in Napa, no judgment!

You’ll get up close to a collection of a dozen huge oak vessels assembled in the traditional style by French coopers. You’ll also see an underground waterfall that keeps cave temperatures and humidity in just the right conditions for the barrel aging process.
The tour concludes with a seated tasting experience of six of the winery’s delicious wines. I love their Merlots, Cabernet Savignons, and Chardonnays.
