Painting Glass With Acrylic Paint

The big question to ask is: will acrylic paint stick to glass? Yes, acrylic paint can be used over glass. However, this doesnt mean that it will always stick easily. For best results, a primer should be used over the smooth glass surface. This should be an enamel-based primer if using an enamel-based paint. To apply the primer, you can either use a brush or a sprayer. Let this layer dry fully for 24 to 72 hours before painting over. The primer will create a more rough surface which will help the paint to stick tightly onto the glass. Some acrylic paints are specially formulated for use on glass and wont necessarily need a primer. Using a primer is generally a good idea though to increase the paint adhesion.

What You Will Need To Paint Your Wine Bottles

  • Empty, cleaned , wine bottle
  • Paint. I used acrylic paint but I’m sure there are a lot of paints out there that would work just fine. Just make sure the paint you choose is compatible with glass.
  • Something to mix and pour your paint from. I used an old plastic measuring cup which handles both the mixing portion and the pouring. You could also use a syringe to drop the paint into your bottle.
  • Something to mix your paint and water. I used a paintbrush I had lying around but you can use whatever utensil you have on hand.
  • Paper towels or old rags. I like to have these on hand because I am messy and because you can use them to cover the end of your wine bottle while spreading your paint around.

So, I did just that. I grabbed my wine bottle it was a green glass bottle and my acrylic paints and WOW! I was thrilled with the way it turned out.

How To Care For Your Artwork

Youve worked hard on your artwork, so you dont want it to break or get damaged anytime soon, right? Hence, as our final subtopic, here are some tips on how to care for your artwork aside from sealing its paint:

  • Attach it to the surface. Lets face it the biggest threat to any piece of artwork made out of glass, both painted and not, is breaking. Its a fragile material, after all. You can lower the chances of it falling off whatever surface youre going to put it on by sticking it down with sticky tack or double-sided tape.
  • Dust it frequently. The best sealing method still wont be enough to protect your design if your piece gets too grimy enough that youd have to wash it all the time. Thats why we recommend dusting it frequently so that it doesnt get too dirty.
  • Wipe it carefully. If it does get too dusty, then you can wipe your glass piece with a damp microfiber cloth. Avoid the painted parts as much as you can, or if you must wipe them clean, do so with utmost care.
  • Never use abrasive material for cleaning. It will scratch the glass delicately smooth surface.
  • Dont worry. If youve followed the baking method we shared with you earlier, then, youll be pleased to learn that it can even survive the top rack of your dishwasher, granted that youve used high-grade acrylic paint as well. Otherwise, you can hand wash it with mild detergent and water. Your work is not microwave-safe, though.

What Is The Best Way To Paint Wine Bottles

When the bottles are cleaned and dry, you can start painting. After you have decided on the colors you want to use, you should create a plan. Will you be spelling out a word or just painting and using embellishments? Will you be giving it as a gift? Deciding could be the hardest part because you will want to decorate several bottles for different occasions.

The best way to paint is to hold the bottle at the top with one hand and start painting the bottom half first, then work your way up. Touch up the very top of the bottle last. Make sure you have covered your work surface with an old towel or table cloth just in case your bottle rolls away.

Wait for the first coat to completely dry before adding the second coat. If you are using chalk paint, it wont take long to dry. In the meantime, you can catch up with your friends and sample appetizers!

Best Paint For Wine Bottles Beyond Acrylic

    Acrylic Paint in Wine Bottles!!

For painting on the outside of a wine bottle, I would also recommend just using spray paint. There are many color and metallic finish options.

Im not a huge fan of this method because its messy and I dont have an outdoor space to do this.

Chalk paint also works great for a vintage rustic matte finish. I love this neutrals assortment from FolkArt Paints.

How To Seal Acrylic Paint On Glass

After you paint your wine glass or wine bottle, you want to make you sure it. You can do this by air drying, or by sealing it and baking it in the oven. I highly recommend baking it in the oven if you intend to use your glass.

If you prefer a matte look and you wont really be using it, then you can air dry, but it will chip and peel off eventually. However this method does take about 21 days to fully cure.

To bake it in the oven, its the same steps from above. Simply place the hand painted wine glass or wine bottle on a cookie sheet and place on a low rack in the oven.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees, and only once the temperature has reached 350ºF, allow the glass to bake for 30 minutes and leave it in for about 30 minutes.

Turn off the oven and allow the glass to cool down naturally before removing it.

Once the paint has cured on your wine glasses, they are top-rack dishwasher safe. I often use mine for special occasions or on my girls night in.

I recommend this acrylic paint sealer from Amazon, to gloss your glass project. Always use about 12 inches of a distance not too close or it will pool up. Use a gentle back-and-forth motion to apply the spray.

You can use an additional coating, even a third if needed, but let one coat dry for at least 15 to 30 minutes before the next coat, if its humid wait 30 minutes. Then let the glass dry at least 24 hours.
