Remember The Wine Youre Giving Is A Gift
When gifting a bottle of wine, keep in mind that the wine is a gift to be enjoyed at the recipients leisure. If youre attending a dinner party, your host may have already pre-selected wine that pairs with the food being served. If youre attending a large party, one bottle of wine might not be enough for everyone and the host may not want anyone to be left out of a toast. Your gift is exactly that, a gift, and gifts are most appreciated when the recipient can enjoy it at their convenience.
For Wine Collectors Who Drink Aged Wine: Durand Corkscrew
If the wine lover in your life has an impressive cellar and prefers drinking decades-old wine, consider the one tool thats a must-have for carefully extracting old corks from the bottle. The Durand combines a traditional corkscrew with a device called an Ah-So, which supports the sides of the cork as you carefully pull it out. The Durand’s price more than makes up for it the first time you pull out a disintegrating cork that doesnt crumble and fall into that rare bottle worth twice as much as the gadget itself.
A Bottle Perfect For Cooking With And Drinking At The Same Time
As W.C. Fields famously said, I cook with wine sometimes I even add it to the food. With bright acidity and a combo of savory forest floor and sweeter baking-spice character, Pinot Noir is a brilliant wine to cook with. The Hilt 2018 Estate Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills hits all those notes, with a slightly wild nose of savory pine and a touch of cloves leading to vivid, juicy red fruitcranberry, cherry, pomegranateand spice, hanging on through a long finish. Just make sure more of this goes into your glass than whatever it is youre cooking.

Dress Up A Simple Brown Bag
What I like most about this idea from Cindy Springer of Bottle Your Brand, a custom label- and sticker-making company, is that bakers twine and glue is all she needed to make a paper bag feel special. Im guessing you already have these things around the house and, in a pinch, you could do this on a brown bag from the liquor store. Spell out joy, cheers, noel whatever you want! Just draw the word onto the bag, trace it again with multi-purpose glue, and add the twine.

Keep in mind that these ideas will work on other bottled gifts besides wine: Prosecco and sparkling wines, Champagne, a bomber of beer, flavored liquors, a non-alcohol cocktail like Curious Elixir, even olive oil.

How To Give Wine As A Hostess Gift From An Expert
Sommelier tips for wine hostess gifts, image via Jennifer Perkins
Ask anyone who regularly entertains what her most frequently received hostess gift is, and youll hear the common answer: a bottle of wine, of course! Its easy to understand why people give wine as a hostess gift: wine is traditional, relatively foolproof, and you can never have too much on hand. But how do you know which wine to bring? And how to set yourself apart as a thoughtful, creative guest and not a cheap or lazy one?

- Clear tape
I found these all-occasion chalk board gift tags over at ellienee.com. You can download them for free there.
I saved the download on my computer so I could use it again.
1. Cut a piece of gift wrap that is about 6 inches longer than the height of the bottle. The width should be enough to roll the bottle on until it is covered.
- Lay the wine bottle on its side on top of the wrong side of the gift wrap.
- Roll the bottle on the gift wrap and tape the edges to secure gift wrap around the bottle.
- Tape the excess gift wrap on the bottom to the underside of the bottle.
- Cinch the top of the gift wrap around the top with your hands to form fit it around the neck.

Wrap A Wine Bottle In A New Tea Towel
I absolutely love this idea on The Everygirl that turns a festive tea towel into furoshiki, or a Japanese fabric wrapping. That makes the towel an additional gift that your recipient can hang in their kitchen long after that bottle of wine is drained. The site even lays out step-by-step instructions for two different methods for wrapping your bottle, something this challenged gift-wrapper appreciates a great deal.

Be Conscious Of How Much Wine To Gift
Does the recipient consider themselves a wine expert, who likes to pair wine with their dinners, or do they only enjoy a glass on special occasions? If its the latter, one bottle that pairs well with their favorite dish or flavors will do the trick. If its the former, and the recipient likes to host guests on a regular basis, a couple bottles will surely be welcomed and your thoughtfulness will be remembered well after the gift is received. If youre attending an event with a partner, consider bringing a bottle from each of you.

How To Attach Gift Tag To Wine Bottle Wrap
2. Cut out the tag and ribbon. I chose not to use it as a tag, but a label.
3. I made slits with a craft knife on the tag to thread the ribbon through.
4. Secure the ends of the ribbon using Glue Dots or hot glue on the back of the bottle.
- Line up edges with the seam in the gift wrap.
- Cut and then press with your fingers to make sure it is adhered and smooth.
5. Wrap ribbon around the neck of the bottle using the Glue Dots to secure.
- Using a pair of scissors, make vertical cuts 1/4-inch apart from each other in the excess gift wrap on the top of the bottle. It will splay out creating a festive topper.

A Little Presentation Goes A Long Way
Add a little flair to your present by dressing up the bottle before handing it over. If the wine bottle is pretty enough on its own, simply placing a ribbon or bow on the bottleneck is a nice touch that doesnt take away from the aesthetics of the bottle. Packaging the bottle to be unwrapped can make for a nice surprise, however consider if your host may want to open the bottle right away upon receipt. Most wines are best served slightly chilled, and packing a bottle in a box may heat it up. If gifting your bottle in person, consider packaging your bottle in an insulated bag specifically meant for gifting wine bottles. If gifting your bottle to a friend or family member across the country, an individual bottle of wine, packaged in a beautiful gift box is always delightful to unwrap.
And, if you feel you need something extra to go with your bottle, include a fun wine accessory, such as a unique wine stopper or corkscrew.
