Guide To Viognier Wine

Viognier is for those who love to stop and smell the flowers. Viognier ranges in taste from lighter flavors of tangerine, mango and honeysuckle to creamier aromas of vanilla with spices of nutmeg and clove.

Depending on the producer and how its made, it will range in intensity from light and spritzy with a touch of bitterness to bold and creamy. If you like Chardonnay youll like the weight of Viognier and notice its often a little softer on acidity, a bit lighter and also more perfumed.

On the palate, the wines are typically dry although some producers will make a slightly off-dry style that embellishes Viogniers peachy aromas.

Viognier wines are almost always noted for an oily sensation on the middle of the tongue which is a characteristic of wines made with this grape. The drier styles come across less fruity on the palate and deliver subtle bitterness almost like crunching into a fresh rose petal.

If you love Viognier
  • If you love the floral notes of Viogner definitely seek out dry Moscatel from Portugal, Torrontés from Argentina and dry styles of Müller Thurgau.
  • If you love the richness of a creamy oaked Viognier, youll also be keen on versions of Marsanne, Roussanne, Trebbiano and Chardonnay.

Expect to Spend:$17$25 for a good bottle of Viognier from South Australia and California and $40+ for a decent Viognier from the Rhône Valley of France or an excellent Viognier from South Australia or the United States.

Domaine De Lostal Viognier 135%

A 100 per cent viognier from the Languedoc region in Southern France, the fruit for LOstal is taken from the coolest part of the estate and that freshness really shines through here. However, having benefited from being aged on lees for some time, this is still very much a full-bodied white with plenty of character and texture. Highly aromatic, with notes of orange peel and ripe apricot, the nutty undertone is both extremely moreish and very food friendly. Try as an aperitif on a sunny day or with a warm goats cheese salad. We could easily have believed this was much more expensive than it was.

How And When To Drink Viognier Wines

It can take time for Viognier to express its character in the glass. Of the 2020 vintage wines I tasted all from the New World only one, Queen Bee , was firing on all cylinders. Most, tasted at the tail-end of 2020, were 2019s, which suggests they might take several months from bottling to get into their stride. With a few notable exceptions, Viognier is not a wine to hang on to, often developing an oily character with age which is less attractive than in Riesling, and even a slightly bitter note. Its interesting that the majority are now bottled under screwcap, which certainly seems to help preserve their freshness.

Viognier is affected more than other wines by the way you drink it. Like Chardonnay, its not a wine for serving too cold or in too small a glass. Most producers recommend a serving temperature of 10°C, but Laurent Miquel suggests 12°-14°C, and even decanting it. I personally find a Burgundy-style glass also makes the better Viogniers more expressive Rose favours a Shiraz or Tempranillo glass.

In terms of pairings, Viognier makes a particularly flattering companion to gently spiced foods such as creamy curries and sauces . It also goes with rich shellfish such as scallops and lobster, along with some quite robust pork dishes.

Food Pairing With Viognier

The trick to pairing foods with Viognier wine is to fully respect its delicate floral notes and medium acidity. Thus, as a general rule, focus on embellishing and expanding the wines core flavors while making sure that the foods you pair with it arent too acidic or bold.

A great example might be to match a bolder weight Viognier from Paso Robles, CA with chicken tangine with apricots and almonds served over a saffron rice. The aromas in the dish should heighten the fruit flavors and creaminess in the wine.

My Top : Viognier Wines Beyond The Rhone

For many of us, Viognier is inextricably associated with the Rhône and especially, perhaps, the iconic wines of Condrieu and Château-Grillet. But it is of course produced elsewhere, so we thought it would be intriguing to explore what other countries have to offer.

Records show that Viognier was planted and harvested in the Rhone region back in the late 18th century, though it wasnt until the 1980s when it became widely planted in areas that suited Rhone varieties, including the neighbouring Languedoc that it really took off and gained a foothold.

Its certainly not a cool-climate variety, and it needs sun and warm Mediterranean-style temperatures to express its heady perfume. The key to success with the grape is not picking too early or too late, agree Louisa Rose of Yalumba and Laurent Miquel, two winemakers who have devoted their winemaking careers to Viognier and whose wines dominated this tasting .

Many of the cheaper wines, mostly under the Pays dOc IGP and produced, I suspect, to add interest to an entry-level range lacked the grapes seductive peach and apricot character, while some of the more expensive examples were more about the oak than the fruit. I think the exposure to oxygen you get in oak barrels is beneficial to Viognier, but it is very easy to overdo it, says Miquel. We are using larger and larger oak tanks to make sure the wines are not over-oaked.

How to Pronounce Viognier? French Wine Pronunciation

Typically known for its stone fruit flavours, Viognier wines are also associated with herbal aromas of thyme, lavender, chamomile and subtle pine. Quite unusual for a white wine, this varietal is often aged and produced as a sweet wine, that softens its otherwise overpowering herbal profile. Said to have originated in the Rhône Valley region of France, Viognier wines are now widely produced around the world, especially in countries like Australia where it has emerged as a niche variety. Usually fermented in barrels, Viognier wine producing brands may choose to carry out the fermentation in oak barrels in order to attain a richer expression of characteristics.
