Raise A Glass To The Truro Vineyards South Hollow Spirits And Crush Pad

Still, it seemed serendipitous that they found themselves becoming vintners. When my dad retired, says Roberts, that first summer, he went out for a bike ride and passed the winery and saw a for-sale sign up. He came back and said, I think we should buy that goddamned winery! We all started laughing it was the craziest thing wed ever heard. But he was insistent and the family trusted his intuition. We feel its the perfect fit, says Roberts.

The communityboth locals and visitorsagrees: the Truro Vineyard of Cape Cod has become a must-stop on everyones itinerary, no matter what the season. In the summer there are wine and spirits tastings, vineyard tours, and evening concerts theyre open year-round for tours and shopping.

We started with seven acresplanted chardonnay, cabernet franc, and merlot, says Roberts. Other grapes are imported, depending on what works best for the wines. Were very excited about the Oregon Pinot this year. Guests can sip wine while sitting in a beautiful calm setting and enjoying a bite to eat. What could be more relaxing?

Crush Pad relies on the freshest of local ingredientsharvested from land and sea alikeand finds interesting ways of presenting them. One nearly universal favorite is the fried cauliflower, made with capers, Reggiano, chili flakes, and lemon zest, and the eggplant and white bean spread with capers, pine nuts, and raisins. Mondays are raw oyster day.

Truro Vineyards On Raising Their Family And Growing Their Business

Photographs by

With miles of pristine ocean coastline, idyllic village centers and fresh-off-the-boat seafood, its no secret why the Capes outermost towns attract thousands of tourists each summer. As the seasons change and the crowds depart, life goes on at a slower pace.

Year-round residents are the fibers that bind these seaside communities together. Some Outer Cape families have deep roots that go back for generations. Others are washashores who made a conscious decision to move here, trading suburban convenience for a tight-knit community where everyone knows your name.

David Roberts Sr. was riding his bicycle down Shore Road in Truro one morning in 2007 when he stopped to say hello to the owner of Truro Vineyards and learned of their intention to sell the business. Newly retired from a 40-year career in the fine wine and spirits industry, the former CEO of United Liquors knew it was an opportunity he couldnt pass up.

Roberts had been vacationing in Truro for close to 50 years. He envisioned the winery as a practical next step in his career, and more importantly, he saw it as a chance to bring his children together as part of a family-run business. Roberts proposed the idea to his wife and children, who at that time were spread out across the country.

It was an experiment to see if there was enough need for a winery to be open on the weekends. People werent busting down the doors, but we had enough of a year-round community for it to work.”

Kristen Roberts
