The Macari winery was established in1995, although the family has owned the land for almost 50 years. It is ona 500 acre estate of prime waterfront property with about 180 acres plantedwith vines and other fields dedicated to compost, farmland andanimals. They are also one of the leaders in the use of organic and biodynamicmethods on the North Fork. They use fish, kelp and seaweed as fertilizersto increase the diversity in the soil and use very low levels ofsprays. The intent is to have a safe environment for theirkids and to make premium wines. The property is well set up for tourismand has a large and very attractive tasting room that also sells gifts.

Macari has been a success from thestart when they sold out their first vintages. They are particularly knownfor their Sauvignon Blanc which has scored as high as a 97 from the New YorkTimes and recently won a silver medal at the 2009 International Wine andSpirits Competition in London. They pick the grapes for the Sauvignon Blanc early because theylove acid.

This sparkling wine is still created in the same traditional method as champagne, where the second fermentation occurs in the bottle, but it has a unique flavor profile.

Champagne, which comes from the Champagne region in France, is primarily made from three grapes: chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier. Pinot noir and Pinot meunier are the only two red grapes in the region. Four other rarely used white grapes are: Pinot gris, pinot blanc, petit meslier, and arbane.

The 2015 Macari Cuvée Katherine is a blanc de blanc and made from 100% chardonnay grapes. But, interestingly, its most dominant notes are by far citrus. This wine is exceedingly fresh, crisp, and fruity. If you are looking not only to celebrate, but to pair a wine with seafood dishes, or aperitifs this would fit the bill nicely.

If you have friends on your guest list that are sauvignon blanc lovers this might also be the sparling wine that turns their head, and perhaps changes their expectations, of sparkling wine. Imagine enjoying the beauty of a North Fork vineyard outdoors while still able to escape to a luxurious warmth. Well, at Macari Vineyards, now you can.

The vineyard has teamed up with local designer Jesse Elliott and White Flower Farmhouse to turn heated platform tents from Terra Glamping into a stylish living room in the vines. These Bergen Road Bungalows, named after the Mattituck tasting room at Macari, are bright and beautifully designed with light wood tables, cream colored furniture and cozy pillows and blankets.

If you fall in love, the contents of the tent are even shoppable. The mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings, local artwork, vinyl music, classic games and more are all available for enjoyment and purchase.

The tents are a way for Macari Vineyards to continue to offer outdoor seating in a safe and comfortable way. When we reopened our tasting room to guests in early September, the response was incredible, Gabriella Macari, manager, said. We knew we had to get inventive to give our guests something safe and fun during the winter while prioritizing the health and comfort of our team. The fact that were able to support some of our favorite North Fork creatives in the process only makes it more exciting.

Macari Vineyards Tasting Notes

A taste of the Macari Vineyards 2008 Sauvignon Blanc quickly confirms what theyre talking about. A complexmixture of tropical fruits, grass and minerals hit you immediately. It isa very crisp and satisfying wine that I thought was outstanding.

The 2007 Chardonnay Estate isfermented in stainless steel and is very reminiscent of a Chablis. Itshould be a very good food wine. The 2007 Chardonnay Reserve is agedin French oak for 12 months and is completely different. This is lush withflavors of vanilla, honey, butter and toast. Its known around the wineryas Hillarys Wine because she served it several times at the WhiteHouse.

The 2008 Rosé is a blend ofCabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Malbec, the firstyear they have used that many varietals in the blend. Thinkstrawberries. I thought it was wonderful but it was just about sold out.

Sette is a blend of halfMerlot and half Cabernet Franc which I found very interesting and a great buyfor the price. The food recommendation was Indian cuisine.

The 2004 Macari Vineyards Cabernet Franc , whichwill doubtless be known as Sonias Wine, was a big, vibrant red but stillsmooth, lovely and with little of the green pepper taste that I usuallyassociate with this wine. The North Fork Cabernet Francs are quite distinctiveand this was a memorable one.
