Winemaker Philip Togni is a legend in the field, and this organic dessert wine is produced from his own harvest of rare and fully ripened black hamburg grapes. This bottle is inspired by constantia, the famed South African dessert wine, but Togni gives it his own Napa Valley spin for a truly exquisite tasting experience.

Floral aromas flood the nose with prune, fig, and black cherry following suit. Chocolate and spiced tea notes on the palate are supported by a kiss of acidity. The finish lingers like a chatty houseguest, but in a good way.

Region: Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France | ABV: 17% | Tasting Notes: Stone fruit, Honey, spice

Never heard of Pineau des Charentes before? If you love sweet booze, this will definitely be up your alley. Although technically not wine, this grape juice / cognac based product is one of Frances most unique alcoholic beverages. Floch explains that Pineau des Charentes is made exclusively in Charente and Charente-Maritime, both located in western France. Pineau des Charentes is made by wine growers and is the only AOC in all of France to be made from grape juice and cognac Floch explains, noting that most expressions show flavors of vanilla, nuts, honey, and spice.

This flavor-packed expression from Parkis is loaded with floral-driven flavors of juicy stone fruit, honey, and spice. The sweetness of grape juice and the strength of cognac create a between delicate and powerful flavors at the same time, Floch says. Parks expression is made from 76% grape juice and 24% eaux-de-vie that is aged for a minimum of 24 months.

With roots in northern Italy, Californias San Antonio Winery has been in operation by the Riboli family for over four generations. From grapes grown in the dry and warm climate of their Paso Robles appellation, this Cardinale red blend is about as sweet as a wine can get.

This is medium-bodied with notes of cherry and plum. Sweet like marmalade, this wine is smooth and reminiscent of a moscato. It is bold and bright with a short and pleasant finish.

Region: Veneto, Italy | ABV: 14% | Tasting Notes: Plum, Tobacco, Chocolate

From vineyards rooted in chalky-clay soils outside the town of Tregnago, about an hour and a half west of Venice, Italy, comes this ultra-rare passito from Dal Forno. In fact, in three decades, the wine has only been produced six times. Made in the tiniest of quantities, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the most profound sweet wines youll ever encounter.

Corvina grapes are used to make the bulk of this wine, along with 15% rondinella, 20% croatina, and 10% oseleta that are then aged for 36 months in oak. The result is rich and decadent, with sweet red-berry fruit, red licorice, crushed stones, and brown sugar-coated candied violets. All this is framed by juicy and brisk acidity, giving freshness to this wine that defies gravity.

Some Tasty Surprises In Publixs Premium Selection

I bought the California cabernet sauvignon at my local Publix, and opened it to go with a nice lamb chop dinner. The 2009 wine has a wonderful big, juicy, deep, dark fruit nose. It tastes of black cherry and blackberry, with a bit of red licorice and some cocoa. Its a nice, full-bodied cabernet with a long finish.

There were only 600 cases made of this cabernet, and a likewise small production for the lines chardonnay and pinot noir, hence the limited edition on the label.

The surprise: Its a wine bottled for Publix, out of Californias Spring Mountain District in Napa Valley. The Publix Premium Limited Edition wines are a 2010 chardonnay , a 2010 pinot noir and the cabernet sauvignon . The chardonnay and pinot are from the Russian River Valley. I tried each at a West Palm Beach store tasting, and they were quite tasty.

The wines entered the market in November 2012, and are only carried by select stores throughout the chains distribution area.

I was told by Publix that the wines were available in Palm Beach County in Boca Raton . I found it in the West Palm Beach store on Southern Boulevard, and if you come across some bottles anywhere else, Id recommend taking them home. The store chain produced some very nice wine with those limited edition productions.

What Time Does Publix Sell Alcohol In Florida

In Florida, alcohol can be sold by grocery stores like Publix starting at 7 a.m. on weekdays and at 8 a.m. on weekends.

During the early morning hours when most of its stores open and stop selling alcohol, Publix sells beer and wine between 7 and 9 a.m., while at night, when most of its stores close, it sells wine and beer between 10 and On Sunday, Publix will begin selling wine for the first time. Publix locations are not available in any of these states or territories: the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Missouri, Alaska, Texas, Massachusetts, Kentucky, South Dakota, Nevada, Ohio, Arkansas, Vermont, and Nebraska. It appears that there is a legal loophole in Florida regarding the size of beer sold in 32-ounce containers.

The state of Florida has some of the strictest liquor laws in the country. There is a fundamental lack of understanding of community needs that limits the hours of sale to 7:00 a.m. to midnight every day. This law violates the communitys needs, and it disadvantages the people of Florida. Several states have already seen the sale of alcoholic beverages at Walgreens. There is no provision in the law that is fair to the people of Florida or in line with their needs. This law needs to be changed.

Winemakers Tobin James and Lance Silver have honed in on the style of the rich vineyards of Paso Robles, Calif. with this sweet and spicy zinfandel. Their tasting room is something of a Paso Robles hub for seekers of quality wine. That jovial spirit is captured in this bottle.

Comparing And Contrasting Vintages Now Versus Five Years Ago

So, as mentioned above, this review is an update from the review I did five years ago.

I wont repeat the entire review I did for the 2011 vintage, but here are the main differences between the two:

  • Both vintages similar in appearance.
  • The current vintage has less of an alcohol bite in the nose. In my review of the 2011, I noted a strong whiff of alcohol that I didnt notice with the 2016.
  • The aromas between the two vintages are mostly similar, but I didnt notice any mocha this time, as I did previously.
  • Less complexity with the 2016 vintages taste. Perhaps a bit more refined, however.
  • Similar finish length, with more tannins noted in the 2016.
  • The biggest difference was that I suggested decanting the 2011. For the 2016, I much preferred a fresh pour.
  • Both vintages seemed a bit young to me and it may be worth letting this wine have a year or two in the cellar before drinking. Though, admittedly, Im not 100% confident in that suggestion. Just a gut feeling.
  • Overall, I enjoyed both vintages, but would give the 2011 a slight edge due it being more complex and lush.
