Oleary Cabernet Merlot Wine Review

I wanted to hate this wine and give it an entirely awful review, but honesty compels me to state first and foremost, Oleary wine is certainly more palatable than its namesake. That said, its far from being a great wine so Ill preface this review by saying its not worth buying even for the gimmick.

Retailing for nearly $15 in the LCBO, this wine is priced in an extremely competitive bracket, and fails to live up. Oleary Cabernet Merlot pours a bright clear ruby. The nose is simple, but pleasant enough. Theres some green vegetables on the nose, with a touch of strawberries and a bit of wood.

The taste is uninspired and dull, but not bad. Its fairly round and sweet, with a touch of blackberry jam, a hint of vanilla and some very mild earthy undertones. Theres not much finish to speak of with only a faint tannic puckering at the end. Once again, Id like to stress that nothing about this wine was inherently bad, although nothing stood out either. If only Kevin was so indiscernible.

If You’re Dating Someone New Don’t Wait To Bring Up Money

If you ask O’Leary, the best gift you can give a new romantic partner isn’t chocolate or flowers: it’s transparency about your finances.

“Do you have any debt? Has your family been bankrupt? Do you have a brother that’s gone bankrupt? All of these these difficult conversations need to be had before the marriage, before people move in together,” O’Leary said. “Because within five to seven years, they’ll manifest themselves as the reason you separate.”

Though it can be a challenging and sometimes embarrassing thing to be honest about your finances early on with a romantic partner, O’Leary believes it will lead to stronger relationships.

“It’s a business, that’s what marriage is. It’s a personal corporation,” O’Leary said. “It’s a partnership, and what’s at the middle of it? Cash flow. Not very romantic, but it’s the truth.”

Starting any new wine business can be challenging, but Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary feels he has one definite advantage over the competition. “Millions of people see me on television as the wine guy,” says the entrepreneur, “I started off curating wines for my friends to becoming the largest purveyor of wine on QVC.” O’Leary’s new site, Shop Mr. Wonderful, features over 55 wines from his partnership with Vintage Wine Estates. I spoke with O’Leary about the site, his favorite wines and why he feels he brings more than the money to the table in any investment.

What was your first exposure to wines?

My father passed away when I was very young and my family moved every two years with my stepfather. In Europe wines are served at the family table and this period introduced me to so many varietals. I didn’t know the differences at that age, but I became very interested. Eventually I became a wine collector and have five commercial cellars around the world where I buy, store and invest.

“Having discussions about money and how it’s made at the dinner table is really, really important,”O’Leary told CNBC Make It. “The concept of money saving and how the world works is something even a child can grasp at an early age.”

Having a positive relationship with money is important, as is having a basic understanding of concepts like debt and interest. O’Leary said that his own children were well acquainted with the concept of debt when they were little.

“When my son was 6 and my daughter was 6, they knew what debt meant,” he says. “These really simple concepts are important because it helps fend off the damage done by credit cards in young people’s hands who don’t understand what happens when they don’t pay back their debts.”

Is Wine Making A Business Or A Mental Illness

How do you become a millionaire in the wine business? You start as a billionaire.

Its a very hard business to make money in. 97% of wine sold in America is sold at under $15.99/bottle. If you want to be successful you need scale, access to great fruit, executional skills to make the wine and logistics in place to ship millions of cases.

How do I know this? I learned it the hard way.

Years ago I tried to do a deal a deal on Shark Tank that involved selling wine as a single serve beverage. The whole idea was 9oz wine in gas sealed plastic glasses. During due diligence I wanted to get the opinion of Annette Alvarez Peters the head buyer of wines at #Costco. At the time she was the most powerful woman in the wine world. No one in the world bought more wine than Costco and I wanted them as a distribution partner in the deal.

One great thing about Shark Tank, and I’m not ashamed to say, is that everyone returns my calls! Why? because their kids watch the show.

But how to reach Annette?

Using nefarious on-line tactics I was able to get her cell number and called her. No answer, so I left a voice mail explaining why I wanted to meet, the whole single wine serve story and the opportunity I thought we could work on together.

20 minutes later my phone rang. It was Annette, she said

“Hey Mr. Wonderful you were rude to Barbara Corcoran last night on Shark Tank and I don’t like that, what do you want?”

I responded.

If You Take A New Job Prepare To Commit Your Time

The biggest “red flag” that O’Leary sees on resumes is candidates who have been “bouncing all over the place.”

If an applicant’s resume shows them holding multiple jobs over the past two years, “I simply put it into the garbage, because we’re not going to look at that person,” O’Leary said. That’s because companies invest money in training new recruits, and having an employee leave after just a few months is “a total waste of money for them.”

“Have a mental commitment, whether you like or you don’t, to stay there for at least two years,” he said. “If you’re asking to become part of a team as an employee and represent that company, you’ve got to have a minimum of a 24-month commitment.”

Take Care Of Yourself

At 67, O’Leary is still as busy as ever with TV appearances on shows like “Money Court” and ABC’s “Shark Tank,” as well as serving as chairman of O’Shares ETFs.

To help stave off burnout, which he said slows his ability to make decisions and makes it hard to “focus on anything,” O’Leary said the best thing to do is take care of your body. He recommended getting in some type of movement for at least half an hour each day.

“Pick whatever that’s going to be walking outside, riding a bicycle, running on a treadmill,” he said. “Some form of distraction so that you can do something other than work. Your body wants to exercise and it needs to do that, and it has to be something that’s done on a routine basis.”

On top of regular exercise, O’Leary said it’s important to make sure you eat healthy and avoid junk food. When you’re overworked or feeling stressed, it can be tempting to turn to unhealthy food to cope.

“The tendency to eat crap when you’re working 18 to 20 hours a day is very, very high,” he said. “If you really want to be top performing and not get caught up in burnout, food is the most important factor.”
