Can I Sell Other Types Of Alcohol Online

Sell on Amazon UK – The South African Wine Store

Yes, as long as you abide by the laws in the state from which youre shipping as well as the state to which youre shipping.

Every state has its own laws about selling alcohol online, including which certifications and licenses it requires as well as which types of alcohol can be sold and the maximum volume that can be shipped.

Amazon Ramps Up Wine Sales

Retailers across sectors have been closing at a swift clip as more sales move to the web. The wine business is not immune to this trend and Amazon, since its 2017 acquisition of Whole Foods, does not intend to miss out on its piece of the wine-fueled pie.

The Seattle-based behemoth recently placed an ad on its site for a Washington DC-based manager of public policy “to help lead state and local engagement and public policy activities related to alcohol regulation manage consultants, trade associations and coalition partners”. Amazon declined to comment for this story or on the job posting.

Despite grim data on closures, independent wine retailers remain upbeat both about their ability to continue to sell wine from stores as well as continuing to grow their online businesses. Clyde Beffa, the co-owner of the three-location , says that while he is not sure how Amazon’s moves are going to affect many retailers, he doesn’t expect his business to suffer.

He, and other retailers, note that their wine sales model is so specialized that they aren’t hyper-concerned about Amazon’s entry into the wine marketplace. “We sell a different set of products, with 70 percent of our stuff done direct,” notes Beffa. He adds that while web-based sales may appeal to some, “many people like to touch and feel the bottles”.

Why It Matters That Amazon Is Selling Wine In Texas

Texas has long been one of the most complicated states for wineries and producers to do business in. It is riddled with dry counties and home to complicated sales legislation.

As Amazon is close to celebrating its full first-year of Whole Foods ownership, the Seattle chain has made some clever inroads to the wine sales market in several major Texas cities. As of June, the chain rolled out one-day wine delivery in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and San Antonio. One- and two-hour delivery windows are available as well.

Going Through the Right Channels

Unlike some other alcohol-delivery services, the forward-thinking chain has always checked all its boxes. Amazon stopped selling wine online via its own site, which never had much traction, from the moment it acquired Whole Foods. Trade analysts and consumers alike expected some fancy footwork from the chain and it has performed as expected.

A number of permits were requested from the Austin-based Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, so drinks ordered could be stored and shipped from a number of local warehouses. Drivers are trained to check customer identification upon delivery to prevent minors purchasing alcoholic beverages.

How To Sell Wine

A bit off topic but if they did test it, it would explain some of the decisions that get made !

Hahahaha

Of course not. However I do suspect they limit just who can sell wine to firms like Laithwaites etc.

So your home made elderberry wont be welcome

Presumably amazon dont test the wine before someone can sell it? So counterfeit could still be sold same as with other stuff.

There is a Wine Store on Amazon but I would assume to sell there requires special approval. Laithwaites offers wines on Amazon via FBA.Contact Seller Support and ask

Wot Pat said. I would hope they have strict criteria in place.

On this I agree totally with you. However this is amazon, so I question how stringent their requirements are in practice.I will point out that some of those selling the dodgy stuff have the required documentation.

Alcohol Seller RequirementsIn addition to the requirements listed above, you will need:

A Premises and Personal alcohol licence Amazon reserves the right to request that sellers provide proof of this licence during the application process the application will be declined if proof is not provided.

What Shipping Carriers Can I Use To Ship Wine

Unfortunately, not every carrier will ship alcohol, and others have a few requirements you must meet.

For example, you cannot ship alcohol via USPS, but you can ship wine, beer, and liquor using UPS and FedEx. Interestingly enough, the reason you cant use USPS to ship alcohol is due to a 1909 law that is still in effect.

In order to ship wine with FedEx or UPS, you must do the following:

  • Register an account.
  • Sign an alcohol transportation contract .
  • Create your shipping label using the carriers electronic shipping solution or an approved third-party platform.
  • Abide by the packaging requirements for wine.
  • Choose the adult signature service option .
  • Affix an alcohol shipping label.
  • And ship!
  • You can visit the UPS and FedEx websites to learn more about each carriers shipping requirements.

    Get Your Personal Licence

The first step will be to get your personal alcohol licence. Selling on Amazon will require you to be registered in the country that your company is registered. In the UK you will need to complete the BIIAB Level 2 award, which is usually a set amount of learning hours followed by an exam. The exam provider will then send you a certificate which you can use to apply for your licence through your local licensing authority.

You will need the following documents:

Application for a personal licence to sell alcohol

Personal licence: disclosure of convictions and declaration

Some local authorities will allow you to apply online while others require you to send your application in the post, but check their websites first. If you already have a personal licence, proceed to step 2.

    Wine Ecommerce Is Growing Rapidly

Does amazon sell wine – red, white and sparkling

Thanks to apps like Uber Eats, Postmates, and Instacart, todays consumers can have nearly any food or drink delivered directly to their door.

But what consistently remains missing from the list of these available products is alcohol.

Now, considering the regulations they have to contend with, its understandable for the average wine retailer to be slower to adopt D2C sales.

However, this isnt to say that only a handful of wine sellers are embracing ecommerce. In fact, its quite the opposite.

Last year, the volume of DtC wine shipments totaled 5.78 million, representing a 15.3% YoY increase. And the value of these shipments came in at an all-time high of $2.69 billion in 2017.

Clearly, there are plenty of brands who recognize the potential of wine ecommerce and have begun taking advantage of this selling channel.

One of the major benefits of selling online is the ability to reach a much broader audience.

Not only that, wine ecommerce can also help companies increase the loyalty of their existing customers.

Traditional advertising for example, TV commercials, print ads, and on-site events substantially limit the number of wine drinkers you can market to. For the most part, the only people you can reach are local consumers.

But digital marketing allows wine sellers to connect with potential customers all over the world.

Just as personalized marketing can bring in new customers, it can also encourage past customers to buy from you again.

If youre starting from scratch, your first step is to identify your target audience. Then, like any ecommerce business, youll need to determine which types of merchandise youll sell.

From there, you need to connect with a wholesaler.

Once youve built your website, select an online shopping cart and payment processing provider.

Next, decide how youll distribute your products and if it makes sense to invest in an online shipping software.

If you already have a brick-and-mortar location, then you only need to worry about building a user-friendly site, setting up an online shopping cart and payment system, and developing an efficient shipping process.

How To Sell On Amazon Usa From Canada: The Only Guide You Need

How the TABC gave Amazon authority to sell and deliver ...
    Wise

Figuring out how to sell on Amazon is a vital step for retailers around the world, and with good reason: amazon.com comes 10th in Alexas global website rankings.¹ That means that a frankly unbelievable number of people are looking at the website every day and not just in the US. Especially thanks to the Amazon Global² scheme, amazon.com is big news around the world even in countries which have their own bespoke Amazon store, like the UK and Germany.

And Canada too. True, amazon.ca is a big deal in its own right: Alexa puts it in 7th place in Canada. But globally, it ranks a meagre 236th.³

Which means that if youre selling things on amazon.ca but not amazon.com, youre missing out. Big time.

Thankfully, these days its easier than ever for Canadian sellers to get their products onto amazon.com. This guide will show you how the process works and give you the tips you need to open your business up to one of the biggest markets in the world.

    Check If You Require Awrs

The Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme yay! This is definitely something to consider if you are intending to buy/sell alcohol in the UK. If you sell alcohol to another business, you may need to apply for approval for the Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme , which was introduced by HMRC to tackle alcohol fraud.

Youll need to apply for AWRS if all of the following apply:

    1. You sell alcohol in the UK

    2. Your sales are made at, or after, the point where excise duty is due

    3. You sell to other businesses for onward sale or supply

If you are only intending to sell to Amazon customers you shouldnt need this, but definitely take the time to make sure you dont. Rule of thumb: cover your bases!

    Examples Of Wine Ecommerce Websites

When it comes to ecommerce, your homepage is your digital welcome mat. And for higher-end merchandise like wine, first impressions are especially important.

Because the culture and tradition of wine drinking has a unique influence on the decisions of wine buyers. And wine drinkers have particular expectations about the merchants with whom they shop.

The first time a shopper visits your website, they dont necessarily have to be blown away .

But they shouldnt be completely unimpressed, either. And they absolutely cannot be disappointed or irritated by an unaesthetic design or non-user-friendly navigation.

Your wine ecommerce website should tell the story of your brand and invite customers to become part of your community.

The design of your site should demonstrate your commitment to providing an exceptional shopping experience for every shopper from wine novices to wine connoisseurs to non-wine drinkers shopping for a gift.

There should be no barriers between the customer and what theyre looking for.

For a little inspiration, here are three wine ecommerce websites built with the customer experience in mind.

By Step: How To Get Started As A Seller On Amazoncom

Heres an overview of how to get set up to sell in the US from Canada on Amazon.

  • Before you get stuck into it, do some market research. Is there a market for your product in the US? Whats already available there? Can you compete on price especially when factoring in international shipping costs?
  • Also before you start, check if there are any restrictions on exporting your product to the US.
  • If youre not yet registered with Amazon at all, the next step is to create your seller account. If your home country is Canada, you can sign up for an amazon.ca account, and youll automatically have the right to sell on amazon.com, and amazon.mx too. You dont need to create separate accounts for each of these countries marketplaces.
  • From your account, you can switch between marketplaces in Seller Central via the Marketplace Switcher.
  • Then start listing! Your items dont automatically populate across all 3 marketplaces: youll have to create the listings yourself. But you can manage things like pricing using the Build International Listings tool described above.
  • Dont forget also to provide bank details, which must be from one of Amazons supported countries. As explained above, you dont need to have a US account, because ACCS can convert money for you but, if you do that, you might face a markup on the exchange rate.
  • Then Theres The Issue Of Costs

Amazon gets into the wine business

Weve already determined that Amazon fees alone are higher than Etsy fees, so if youre an established Etsy seller, your profit margin will be lower on those sales made on Amazon if you make the listings identical.

Theres also the possible monthly $39.99 charge to consider. You could raise your prices on Amazon but there are also reports floating around the internet of Amazon requiring sellers to lower their prices.

Another important factor in making money on Handmade at Amazon is whether or not Amazon customers are your target market. Typical Amazon shoppers want things quickly and with minimal effort on their part.

If your products take several days to make, not including shipping time, youre already at a disadvantage. If your products require any kind of communication or approval by the buyer, you might have an issue. Most people dont expect to talk to the seller theyre buying from on Amazon if they even realize theyre buying from an individual seller at all!
