How To Open a Bottle Of Wine

The process is different if youâre trying to figure out how to open a Roscato wine bottle. Or any other screw-capped or pressurized sparkling wine bottle.

First, always keep the bottle pointed away from guests and keep a thumb or hand on the cork at all times. Then remove the foil by either pulling on the tab or cutting it cleanly at the bottom of the cage. Untwist the wire cage and loosen it for removal. Tighten your grip on the cork and, holding the bottle at a 45-degree angle, twist the bottle . Do so until the cork is released and let the CO2 rush quiet.

Two things should be re-emphasized here. The wire cage shouldnât be removed until after the cork is released from the bottle. And the bottle should be twisted, not the cork.

I heated up the tongs until they were red-hot, grabbed the bottle around the neck with them, brought the bottle outside and immediately packed snow around the neck. It cracked evenly at the neck line. I ran it through a funnel and strainer to be safe, but there were no glass shards in it.

An Australian has been sentenced to five and a half years in jail for killing a Singaporean man and injuring his wife by hurling a wine bottle, with the court saying the mans actions reflected religious hostility toward Muslims.

Andrew Gosling threw an empty wine bottle at a dinner gathering of ethnic Malay Muslims two floors below his apartment in August 2019, hitting Nasiari Sunee on the head.

The bottle ricocheted and struck his wife on the shoulder. Nasiari, a 73-year-old delivery driver, suffered severe head injuries and died the next morning.

Gosling pleaded guilty in February to two charges of causing death and injury.

Judge Victor Yeo Khee Eng said Gosling displayed a high degree of rashness and disregarded the groups safety when he threw the bottle. His inebriation may have impaired his judgment but not to the extent of causing an unsound mind, the judge said.

Gosling shouted religiously charged vulgarities after throwing the bottle, and the prosecution said his actions demonstrated religious hostility.

The judge agreed and said tolerating criminal acts like Goslings would undermine Singapores racial and religious harmony. About 15 per cent of Singapores multiracial population of nearly 6 million are Muslim.

The judge also said the sentence needed to be a deterrent so people wouldnt throw dangerous objects from high rises in a country where many people live in them.

Worms are living creatures that eat plants and other things. They are usually found in soil or water. The worms use their tails to move around. Worms can be used as fertilizer because they help decompose dead plant matter.

Push down on the wings simultaneously to pull the corks out of the bottles. Turn the handle clockwise 4 times to remove the cork from your corkscrew. This electric corkscrew is easy to use and perfect for people who have trouble using traditional corkscrews.

The Serrated Knife Method

This method also famously works with a regular set of keys, but it’s a little easier to exert gentle force with a knife’s handle. You’ll need a key, a knife, or any sharp/flat object.

  • Insert the object at a 45-degree angle into the cork without cutting through it.
  • Rotate the object, pulling the cork up and out as you do.
  • Exert careful force and take your timelet the cork come up as you rotate.

Worms are very tiny creatures that live inside bottles of wine. To get rid of worms, you need to use a corkscrew. You can buy a corkscrew that removes the cork from the top of a bottle. Corkscrews come in different sizes. Some corkscrews are designed to work with specific types of wines. A corkscrew is also useful when removing the cork from a bottle of champagne.

If your wing corkscrew does have an integrated knife, go ahead and use it! No matter what type of knife you use, work carefully so you dont slip and cut your hand.

  • 2Set the corkscrew in place on top of the cork. Place the tip of the corkscrew in the center of the cork and push down gently. The metal cap surrounding the screw should rest against the top of the bottle, while the wings should be lowered against the neck of the wine bottle.XResearch source
  • Simply indent the top of the cork with the tip of the screwit doesn’t need to be deeply embedded at this point.
  • 3Twist the handle clockwise to drill the screw into the cork. Hold the metal cap in place over the bottles top, keeping your hand below the “wings” that are lowered against the neck of the wine bottle. Crank Up The Heat To Uncork Your Wine Bottles

Want to uncork your wine without a bottle opener? The best way is to heat your wine to bring out the natural aromas as well as release the flavor. By doing so you are introducing oils and vapors that are released when wine is properly aged and properly cooked. If this process is done correctly and the temperature is not too high, the wine will taste better than uncorked. Many people love to open a wine bottle with the hopes of finding that hidden treasure or getting a good price, however if it is not properly done, it can be quite the insult to your wine.

Some people just like to open the bottles on their own others like to take a break from time to time, either to go grocery shopping or do something else that requires a break from cooking or drinking, so it really does not matter what method you choose to uncork your wine. I personally do not open my wine bottles unless they are in the refrigerator to be stored for later, unless I know they have a label that says it is an opener. For example, if the bottle has a lock around the neck it cannot be opened by a standard opener, only a cork bottle can be opened by one.

Twist It Out With A Set Of Keys Or A Serrated Knife

If you have a set of keys or a serrated knife to hand, you can use these make sure the wine keeps flowing wherever you are.

Take your knife or key and insert it into the cork at a 45-degree angle. Once youve inserted the key or knife, rotate it in a circle to twist the cork from the neck of the bottle. The cork should eventually come out after a few rotations.

If you dont insert your key or knife enough, the cork could crumble into the bottle, so try to take your time and make sure you really get your object in there.

How To Open A Wine Bottle With A Screw

If you or someone you live with likes to be a handyman or woman this might be a great method for you.

  • Gather a screw, screwdriver, and a metal fork. You will want a larger and long sized screw to be able to get enough traction in the cork.
  • Remove the foil cover from the top of the wine.
  • Using the screwdriver, twist the screw down into the cork. Leave a few millimeters of space between the cork and the top of the screw head.
  • Take the fork and slide the teeth around the screw between the cork and the head of the screw. You can also use the back of a hammer instead of a fork to pull the screw and cork up.
  • While you brace the bottle, Use the fork to pull the screw and cork up. You can use a hand towel for better grip. Having someone else hold the bottle while you pull up might make it a little easier.
  • Hook Em With A Hanger

How To Open a Bottle of Wine Using a Wine Key Corkscrew ...

This method is relatively easy, but it entails saying goodbye to one of your wire hangers you wont be using it to hang clothes again. First, bend the tip of the hanger about 30 degrees back if you do this right, it will look like a fish hook. Next, slide the wire down into the sealed wine bottle, alongside the cork. Rotate the wire 90 degrees so that the hook is underneath the cork. Simply pull the wire up, and the cork should release. Pliers or other household items can be used to tug at the hanger if it seems stuck. Just be sure to use a towel or gloves for protection.

Pushing The Cork Into The Bottle

  • 1Find an object with blunt ends. It should be narrower than the cork and something that will not stab, shatter, burst, chip, or break the cork or bottle. A cheap white ballpoint pen or basic marker , in each case with the cap on, will work well. You could also use a long rod, a cylindrical container of chapstick, or a slim knife sharpener. Carabiners work well, too.XResearch source
  • 2Place the bottle on the floor or a steady surface. You can put in your lap to keep it in place. You could simply rest it on a table as well.XResearch source
  • You can also place the object against a wall or other vertical surface and press horizontally. Push on the bottle’s wide base to force the cork in easily. Hold the neck area and the other end of your object to prevent slipping. Make sure the surface is strong enough so that it will not dimple, or protected, like a wall padded with some junk mail.
  • 3Set your object against the cork. The cork is usually already recessed slightly into the bottle’s neck. If the cork is flush with the end of the bottle, push your object against the cork to force it in a little. This will allow your object to stay in place without slipping off the side of the bottle.
  • 4Push the cork down. Point the bottle away from people, just in case wine sprays out. While gripping the bottle with one hand and your object with the other hand, push firmly on the cork until it falls into the bottle. Be ready for the wine to splash a bit when the cork hits it.XResearch source
  • Wrap The Bottle With A Towel And Use The Wall To Smack It Out

This is the point on the list where things get a bit dangerous, so proceed with caution. The previous two options required at least one tool, but if you find yourself with scarce resources, this option may be your best friend. Simply wrap the bottom of the wine bottle in a thick towel and bang it against a wall repeatedly. Obviously, the bottle may break if you do this, so consider it a last resort. You wont get the cork out of the bottle the first time you smack it against the wall, so we suggest refraining from using your full strength. Instead, lightly hit the bottle against the wall many times, slowly moving the cork out.

How To Open A Wine Bottle With A Knife

Hereâs how to open a bottle without a wine bottle opener in a very similar way to the key method above.

Youâll take a relatively sharp steak knife . The goal is to skewer the middle of the cork downward and at an angle. So insert the knife just off the edge of the cork, angled toward the center. Push it down about an inch. Then youâll have a good enough grip on the cork to start pushing or pulling it circularly.

Eventually, the cork will loosen and come up a bit. Itâs basically the key method but with a knife.

There are a few considerations to make based on more unique styles of wine, however.

    • A long screw
    • A screwdriver
    • A hammer

How To Open A Bottle Of Wine With A Waiter’s Corkscrew

Waiter’s corkscrews, also known as wine keys, are our Test Kitchen’s preferred way to open a wine bottle. They’re slim, portable and relatively inexpensive.

  • Carefully release the foil cutter from the base of the corkscrew it often looks like a serrated bird’s beak knife.
  • Place the cutting edge on the neck of the wine bottle below the lip.
  • Firmly, but carefully, press the knife against the bottle and rotate the bottle to cut the foil and form a deep indentation that will allow you to easily pull off the top.
  • Tuck away the knife.
  • Once the foil is removed, release the corkscrew, a.k.a. the worm, and place its tip in the center of the cork.
  • Hold the wine bottle steady and rotate the corkscrew clockwise into the cork until it’s about 3/4 of the way through.
  • Lower the lever and place the notch of the hinge onto the lip of the wine bottle. Use it as leverage to lift up the lever and pull upwards to remove the rest of the cork. If your waiter’s corkscrew has two notches, use the shorter notch first and then the one below it once you’ve released more of the cork.
  • Use A Hammer And A Screwdriver To Uncork Your Wine

Get Out Your Toolbox! Grab a hammer and screwdriver to open a bottle of wine without a corkscrew. A long screw works best for this hack.

How to open a bottle of wine with a screwdriver

  • Screw a long screw into the cork with the screw driver. It should be in far enough into the cork that it wont just break off the top of the cork, and it should stick out far enough to get some leverage.
  • Take the back side of the hammer the part that pulls out nails and pull up in the head of the screw. Its going to take some elbow grease as they say, but the effort is rewarded with a bottle of wine when youre finished. Worth it.
