Use our recipe for peach sangria as a base for your ratio of ingredients. If youre entertaining, use a couple of bottles of wine, and try using a combination of colours. Go light on the added alcohol, so around one part spirit to five parts wine, depending on the strength of your hard spirit. When it comes to the mixer, try adding around a third of the amount of wine, so around 500ml of mixer for 140cl of wine. With fruit and garnishes, add according to taste.

This red sangria recipe is SO simple to make! Heres how it goes:

First, prep the fruit. Thinly slice the orange, and then cut those slices into quarters. Chop the apple, and thinly slice the lime. Add this fruit to a large pitcher along with the raspberries.

Next, add the wine, brandy or Cointreau, and orange juice. Stir to combine.

Finally, chill. Pop the sangria in the fridge to chill overnight.

Serve in glasses with ice. Enjoy!

Choosing The Best Wine For Sangria

Because of sangrias Spanish origins, Spanish red wines are a natural fit for sangria. But most any red wine that you really like will work in this recipe. As with any cocktail made with wine, its important to use a wine that you like to drink on its ownafter all, even all the booze and fruit and sweeteners can only do so much to mask a crummy wine, and theres no hiding the tell-tale headache that youll have the day after. So dont go for totally bottom-shelf wine. That said, dont use a really nice bottle, either! How Do You Sweeten Sangria

To sweeten this sangria recipe and balance things out I added apple juice as well. I like using an unfiltered honey crisp cider, but you can use your favorite brand.

Common ways to sweeten sangrias also include just adding sugar. One could never go wrong with some fresh orange juice, either.

Finally, add a splash of sparkling water for some bubbles, or you could use a sparkling apple cider which adds a little more flavor to your drink. You could also top this sangria with prosecco instead to take this drink from fabulous to super fabulous!

Start by preparing the fruits. Cut the navel orange into thin slices. Cut 2 limes into thin slices. Wash 10-12 strawberries and chop off their top leafy part. Cut them into small pieces. Wash the green apple and cut it in half. Cut the half into small pieces. Use the other half somewhere else.

Note You can use any fruits that you like. Make sangria with seasonal fruits for a different taste each time. If using watery fruits, add them to the pitcher closer to the serving time.

Make the simple syrup by mixing ¼ cup sugar with 2 tablespoon water in a pan. Boil for 2-3 minutes on medium heat until the sugar is dissolved and the syrup is slightly thick. Remove the pan from heat and let the syrup cool down. A detailed recipe to make simple syrup is here

Note You can use any sweetener of your choice. Granulated sugar, brown sugar, honey or maple syrup, anything is fine.

Add the orange slices, lime slices, chopped strawberries, and chopped green apples into a large pitcher. You can muddle it slightly to release their flavors.

Pour 1 liter red wine on top.

Add ¼ cup brandy and ¼ cup simple syrup and mix well. You can use any liquor like rum, vodka, triple sec, cognac, or contreau in place of brandy.

Refrigerate the sangria for at least 4 hours or overnight. Add 2 cups of club soda just before serving.

Serve over ice.

How Long Does Sangria Need To Sit

One of the hardest parts of this recipe is being patient. This isnt a make-it-and-drink-it cocktail. Sangria needs a minimum 6-8 hours of chill time in the fridge to let all the flavors come together. The sangria gets into the fruit and the fruit juices soak into the wine. Its beautiful.

Now that being said, if youre REALLY in a pinch, you can get away with 2 hours in the fridge if you have to but trust me when I say this easy sangria recipe gets better the longer it sits.

At my house, this is hands down the best sangria recipe. Its classic, easy to make, and its always a favorite with our friends and family.

How Long Should A Sangria Sit

You should let the sangria sit for at least a couple of hours, but overnight is the best! You really get the fruit flavours into the cocktail when you let it sit longer and the fruit is more delicious to eat!

Of course, I changed my red wine sangria up. I added spiced rum instead of brandy, grabbed the first red wine I saw in my pantry, blueberries and used a sweet lemonade I had left in the fridge to sweeten it instead of simple syrup.

Let me tell you, that sweet lemonade worked like a charm. Between it and the sweetened orange juice I didnt need a speck of simple sugar. And the spiced rum?

Sangria is a fantastic make-ahead party punch. Stir it all together and refrigerate for 2 to 8 hours for maximum fruity flavor.

In a hurry? Sangria doesnt require a long rest before serving if you start with chilled wine and flavorful fruit! Squeezing half of the orange directly into the wine makes it taste a little fruity right off the bat, and the fragrance of the remaining fruit helps it taste quite fruity.

Can I Use A Different Kind Of Wine

Not a fan of pinot noir? Not a problem! Any medium-bodied red wine will work for this recipe!

The goal for whatever wine you choose is something low in tannins. If youre not familiar with what a tannin is, its basically a fancy way of saying bitterness. A wine thats high in tannins is more bitter or dry, while one thats low in tannins is sweeter and typically more fruity. You can see why this is what we want!

While traditionally a red wine is used in Sangria recipes, but if youre not the biggest fan of reds you can try substituting it for a dry white or champagne!

The bitterness from a dry white wine complements the sweet fruit and syrups beautifully! It adds just the right pucker if youre someone who doesnt like overly sweet drinks.

If you decide to go with champagne, youll want to add the bubbly shortly before serving it so you dont lose the fantastic sparkle. This version wont keep well in the fridge once mixed because it will lose most of its fizz. If you want to be able to enjoy this for a couple of days, mix all of the ingredients together EXCEPT for the champagne only add the champagne before serving.

  • Use fresh fruit It sounds like a simple concept, but its so easily overlooked. When youre picking out your favorite fruits, make sure theyre as fresh as possible.
  • Use a good red You dont have to use a bottle of wine that costs $40, but you want to make sure that its a wine that youd drink by itself.
  • Make sure its nice and cold You want to make sure that youve refrigerated your sangria for at least 3 hours before serving, you dont want a lukewarm sangria!
  • Customize it I use simple syrup in this recipe, but you could easily trade this out for something like my Fresh Cherry Syrup or Blueberry Syrup for another pop of fruity flavor!

    Essentially its a fruity wine with a kick, typically a hard alcohol added to wine and fruit. A lot of time there is a fruity flavored alcohol that is also added.

    This is a red sangria so typically a Garnacha or Pinot Noir is used. It doesnt have to be an expensive one because you dont want the flavors in your wine to overpower everything else in it.

    Typically a hard alcohol is added. I used brandy in this recipe for that component. Sometimes a rum, gin or vodka is used.
