In August 2002 Rick and Frieda Lakeit opened Caroline Cellars Family Estate Winery. Caroline Cellars is steeped in over four generations of family wine making tradition from Germany to Canada. All wines are produces on-site using grapes grown on their 26 acre and 11 acre properties.The Farmhouse Cafe is the on-site restaurant that serves up fresh and delicious lunches and dinners. Total Wine & More opened its first Michigan store in Grand Rapids earlier this month.
The 34,000-square-foot store, at 4923 28th St. SE, features more than 8,000 wines, 3,500 beers and 3,000 spirits. Customers also can find a variety of soft drinks, bottled water, mixers glassware and cigars.
The Grand Rapids store will employ upward of 50 local team members, who will be given more than 100 hours of training on beer, wine and spirits before they hit the main floor.
âWe want our customers to be taken care of by educated folks,â said Edward Cooper, vice president of public affairs and community relations. âUnderstanding varietals of wine and the different types of beer and spirits is important to us.â
âWe want to be seen as the employer of choice in the beverage world,â Cooper said. âWe want people to feel like they can have a career with us. Weâre particularly interested in investing in and growing our team members.â

German Late Harvest Wines
In Germany, wines are classified according to the ripeness of the grape at time of harvest. Within the Qualitätswein mit Prädikat classification, there are four levels of late harvest wines, roughly ranging from dry to very sweet: Spätlese , Auslese , Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese with the last two levels being botrytized.
Ice wines are popular in the cold northernly wine regions of Germany and Canada where the grapes can freeze on the vine. As the grapes are pressed, the frozen water crystals are eliminated leaving the highly concentrated sugar behind.
Raisin wines are sometimes made from grapes that have been left on the vine in the sun to concentrate their sugar. The result is similar to that of the ice wine process, but is a much older process and suitable for warm climates.

Ice wine is the perfect special occasion glass. Thanks to its syrupy full-bodied consistency and rich liquid-gold hue, the dessert wine is thought of as being deeply indulgent, despite being lower in alcohol than most wines, at around 10% ABV.
Squeezing frozen grapes into small but sweet concentrations is a technique dating as far back as ancient Rome. Germany has called it a homegrown delicacy since the late 18th century, and in North America, the style seems to have caught on in the 1970s, sparked by a German in Canadas Okanagan Valley.
Once a chance for farmers to save their crops after an unforeseen frost, making ice wine is a dying art. Fewer winemakers are leaving grapes on the vine after harvest, because these days that cold snap can no longer be counted on to come.
In Germany, now the worlds second-largest producer of ice wine after Canada, 2019s warm winter left an unprecedented situation: All but one harvest failed. Due to global warming, the chance of harvesting ice wine grapes at minus 7 degrees Celsius has drastically decreased over the past 10 years, says Ernst Büscher, a spokesperson for the German Wine Institute.

Well for one thing, its probably the largest liquor store in New Jersey. The size of the store is amazing. They have a LOT of selection. Its like a giant Home Depot for wine.
As far as prices Id say theyre middle of the road. Many of their bottles are exclusive, so its hard to do a true comparison. We did a little spot-checking of familiar brands and found that some prices were on par, and others were a bit higher. Especially for the magnums.
They do offer a mix and match price discount for purchases of six bottles or more so that isnt too shabby.

Total Wine and More will hold their grand opening on Thursday, November 18th in the Brentwood Place Shopping Center, located at 330 Franklin Road in Brentwood, next to Nordstrom Rack.
Inside the store, they will offer 8,167 wines, 4,874 spirits, and 2,693 beers. The motto of the store is lowest prices and the best selection stating they have 1,500 wines under $10 a bottle. The new store will also have an & More rewards program for customers where you collect ten points for every $1 spent in the store.
Hours of operation for the store, Monday Thursday, 9 am -10 pm, Friday-Saturday, 9 am -11 pm, and Sunday 10 am 8 pm.

The company started in 1991 when brothers David and Robert Trone opened a small store in Delaware. The superstore at 11370 Parkside Drive in Turkey Creek area will carry more than 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits and nearly 3,000 beers, according to Edward Cooper, vice president of public affairs and community relations for Total Wine the company bills itself as the nations largest wine and spirits dealer.
I think were unlike any other retail liquor store in Tennessee, Cooper said. I think that customers will be happy with our interest and desire in giving them what they deserve, and thats price, service, selection and a great customer experience.
When Total Wine opens in a new market, it seeks out local charitable organizations to support, he said. Here, the first of many the firm will work with are the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Pat Summitt Foundation. During the stores opening weekend June 28 through July 1 10 percent of all wine sales will be donated to each group, Cooper said.
We want it to be a significant donation, because we always want to be active and involved in our community, he said. At a minimum well donate $10,000 to each of those organizations, and we hope to zoom past that.
