Can You Still Buy Ripple Wine
Ripple wine is available on auction sites such as eBay, but I’m not sure if it would be in a drinkable condition, and there is no guarantee of its originality. However, expect to pay between $150 and $200.
Where can you buy Ripple Wine these days?
Ripple wine was manufactured by E.J. Gallo from 1960-1984. It was a very popular drink, although “real” wine lovers argued that it was more of a punch than a wine.
It may have been due to its low price that production stopped as maybe it was no longer viable, or it may have been pressure from the government as it was too cheap and easy for people to get drunk on the stuff!
It was certainly very popular with teenagers and the rising hippie movement who thought it a very “cool” drink. I think Ripple Wine was the “alcopops” of its day, so it started a bit of a trend. It was aimed at the young, and people who weren’t really keen on other alcoholic drinks.
TV and radio ads labelled it “the ice cold refresher with twice the pleasure, and, a little creepily perhaps, the wine that winks back at you.
The bottle had a ripple effect and eventually came in three flavours – original, pear and pagan pink. Gallo decided against putting their name on the bottle though which possibly speaks volumes regarding their own faith in the product!
Enjoy A 200 Dollar Bottle Of Ripple
I know Ripple best as a song by the Grateful Dead, but apparently there is nostalgia for the wine as well. The fortified and fizzy sweet wine concoction was produced by E & J. Gallo between 1960 and 1984. And, according to The Drinks Report, “Surviving bottles are extremely rare with unopened bottles, originally sold for $1, valued at between $150 and $200.”
If you do decide to spend two hundred dollars on a bottle of Ripple versus, say, Bordeaux or Burgundy, unfortunately I doubt that it will be as long-lived as storied and costly French vintage wines from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Speaking of vintage, check out this commercial for Ripple, appealing to “lively people” looking for “ring-a-ding flavor” in a wine that “winks back at you”. I never thought of the bubbles in sparkling wine as winking back at me but now I can’t get that image out of my head and I’m sort of freaked out.

They come and go. Designer vodkas flash and fade like hastily assembled boy bands new beer genres wail for attention then spiral silently down the drain strange liqueurs try to muscle their way into our shot glasses then scurry back to whatever faraway land they sprang from.
Its a crap shoot. But roll those dice they must, and for good reason. Who would have guessed wild-ass ideas like light beer and flavored vodka would have taken hold as they have? Who would have bet money that a medicinal German liqueur would come to dominate the shot market? Some failures are more memorable than others, and below we feature a trio of prominent contenders that fought the good fight then went down with more noise than usual.

The Name: Some armchair etymologists claim ripple was 30s bluesman slang for a type of cocktail, but if that were true it would surely have popped up in at least one old blues song, cocktail manual or slang dictionary, which it didnt. More likely it just seemed like a nice name for a new kind of drink. Ripple is a pleasant word describing, as it does, liquid making a pretty motion.
The winos of the day generally preferred Gallos more high-powered offerings: Night Train and Thunderbird. Ripple found much more acceptance with the younger set it became the drink of choice for college kids and made headway in the black community as well.

Ripple was originally founded in 2012 under a different name, but rebranded in 2015 to Ripple Labs. The exchange-slash-token has quickly grown in popularity due to how it allegedly has very minimal transfer time in exchanges and low fees. Ripple, an alternative to the likes of Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin, is different than most cryptocurrencies in that it actually uses connections to banks and companies. According to their site, Ripple is currently used by companies like American Express – Get American Express Company Report , Santander – Get Banco Santander SA Report , Standard Chartered and Westpac – Get Westpac Banking Corp. Report .
As of early 2018, Ripple was projected to surpass Bitcoin’s market capitalization, according to CNBC. So, Ripple is certainly having a moment. On its site, Ripple claims to have “connectivity across payments networks, instant, on-demand settlement, real-time traceability of funds, and low operational and liquidity costs.” Pretty appealing.
And, if you’re needing that cryptocurrency ASAP, Ripple brags a payment settlement time of 4 seconds .
As of the writing of this article, Ripple’s XRP price is $0.4656/coin with a 30-day XRP volume of $6.86 billion USD. And, with a market capitalization of around $47 billion USD, Ripple seems to be catching on.
