Non Alcoholic Sparkling Wine – Tasted and Rated

Can zero-alcohol wine really taste like the real thing?

When researching the best non-alcoholic wines, we looked for products that genuinely rival standard wine for complexity and satisfaction. It’s true that low-alcohol wine can struggle to replicate the thick mouthfeel and long finish you might expect from a good full-alcohol wine, but things have improved fast in recent years as winemakers race to create the best products.

Low-alcohol booze is big business, and established winemakers including Adnams and Hardys are building ranges of low and no-alcohol wines. We’ve also seen the rise of dedicated alcohol-free winemakers, following in the footsteps of German pioneer Carl Jung . Now there’s Eisberg in Germany, Thomson & Scott and Belle & Co in the UK, and Richard Juhlin in Sweden. We’re happy to recommend wines from all these specialists in our list below.

Low-alcohol or alcohol-free what’s the difference?

A trace amount of alcohol, even 0.2%, makes it easier for winemakers to replicate the complex flavours, dryness and mouthfeel of their full-strength counterparts. That compares with around 15% for a standard Sauvignon Blanc. So if you’re not teetotal, it may be worth trying low-alcohol wine and getting used to the difference, rather than going straight for alcohol-free and being put off by the experience. We’ve included a separate list of low-alcohol recommendations below.

Non Alcoholic Wine Definition

To put it in simple words, non alcoholic wines are made by removing the alcohol from normal ones. In fact, there are various ways to have a cup of dealcoholized drink:

  • The traditional methods: the very first output was obtained via reverse osmosis or thin-film evaporation . However, these approaches can not only remove the alcohol but also change the flavor and aromas of the drink.
  • The incentives : Use a vacuum to dealcoholize the wine. When under this special equipment, alcohol starts evaporating at about 27°C. Thus, even the volatile flavors and mild aroma can be saved effectively.

The second breakthrough technique was already invented by Dr. Carl Jung, a wine merchant, and son of a family of winemakers from Rheingau, German in 1908. The incentive can make it possible to remove 100% of the alcohol but retain all the flavor. Today, most robust zero alcoholic wine producers rely on this fuzz-free method.

My Take On Nonalcoholic Wine

The experience of drinking nonalcoholic wine will likely never exactly match that of alcoholic wine, but this doesnt mean that nonalcoholic wine doesnt have value. Ive come to think that its point is best understood by removing the word wine from the equation completely. Taste Leitzs nonalcoholic riesling, for example, without comparing it to his regular riesling, and youll have a drink thats more compelling and more mature than juice. Even the finest grape juice is quite sweet, and while you might not get a full body or strong aroma with nonalcoholic wine, you do get the sense that this was a fermented product which is to say that deeper flavors we call complex were unlocked. Fermentation produces molecules that the grape itself cannot supply, writes McGee in On Food and Cooking. The process brings out the grapes own flavor potential. Some of that is lost through dealcoholization, but not all of it.

TL DR: You might not call it wine, but you cant really call it juice, either.

Proxies By Acid League

Acid League, the maker of Proxies, started out in 2019 developing raw vinegars from fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. They continue to make these specialty vinegars in small batches for the highly experimental chef. Along the way, the fermentation experiments gave way to Proxies, which are both non-alcoholic and explicitly non-wine. “Layered blends of juices, teas, spices, bitters, and more designed to pair with food and be enjoyed in your finest stemware” is how the drinks are described. There are currently seven flavors of Proxies, all with moody names that impart more of a vibe than an actual description, like “Velvet,” “Zephyr,” “Nightshade,” and “Moss.” But what exactly are they?

Each of the Proxies is made with a group of core components that includes a traditional winemaking grape, as well as additional fruits like cherry, cranberry, strawberry, apple, grapefruit, kiwi, and more. Additional core components are broken down into ingredients that impart acidity, body, and spice. Emma Orlow at Bon Appétit writes, “It had all of the complexity that’s typically reserved for booze … was a lot more interesting than other non-alcoholic bevs I’ve tried. It’s worth noting that while the Proxies mimic the experience of pouring and drinking wine, they aren’t claiming to perfectly replicate a particular type of vino.”

Best Non Alcoholic White Wines To Try In 2022

The world of white wine is pretty amazing.

While it doesnt get nearly as much love as its cousin red, the landscape of white wines is diverse, complex, and delicious, meaning you dont have to look very far to find a variety thats right for youno matter your taste preferences or the occasion.

This is especially true in the world of non-alcoholic wine. Current dealcoholization technology makes it so most non-alcoholic wines have a touch of sweetness. While this sweetness can be a bit off-putting in reds , in whites this matters much less, as most white wine is expected to sip a little sweeter.

The result? A growing portfolio of non-alcoholic white wines that drink just like their traditional counterparts. That said, some are much more enjoyable than others. And to help you understand the difference, and find the alcohol-free white wine thats right for you, our team is breaking down the 11 Best Non-Alcoholic White Wines to Try in 2022:

Price: $9-$11/bottle
