Total Wine Is Fined For Double Dipping With Gift Cards

Each state has control over how its wine retail market is run and New York State is no exception. The state has long hewed to a one-store per family, or per company, rule in order to foster a strong independent wine market.
Total Wine & More, the national chain that has 214 locations all over the country, has tried to open stores in a number of New York locationsincluding Queens and Westchesterand finally opened its first and only store in New York State in Long Island in 2017. Local retailers and drink consultants all expressed concerns about the stores ability to operate independently since it has opened and their concerns were borne out when the chain was fined, and paid, $22,500 for four violations.
The acquisitions centered on the emission of gift cards in the state of Florida that were redeemable in New York State. All four issues were brought in front of, and validated, by a judge according to the Albany-based New York State Liquor Authority.

Totals public relations team declined to comment for this story. According to William Crowley, the director of public affairs for the NYSLA, The SLA remains committed to prosecuting all violations of the Alcoholic Beverage Control law to ensure liquor stores remain independent and are not gaining an unfair advantage over businesses that are following the law.
Memorial Day Alcohol Sales Likely To Surge Helping A Suffering Industry

But with the coronavirus pandemic this year, government officials are urging consumers to practice social distancing and stay close to home during a popular time for imbibing.
In 2019, Memorial Day was the second-biggest holiday for alcohol consumption, trailing only the Fourth of July, according to Nielsen analysis of retail sales data from the two weeks around the holiday.
Im sure that theres going to be some drop in sales, Euromonitor International research analyst Aga Jarzabek said. Its going to be much lower than last year, but I wouldnt be surprised if its still a pretty huge spike for Memorial Day.
More consumers are drinking at home, leading total alcohol retail sales to jump 26.5% during the nine weeks ended May 9 from a year earlier, according to Nielsen data. But the closure of restaurants and bars is putting pressure on the industry.
It will be devastating for many small independent owner-operators, Colbert said.

Total Wine Announces Wilmington Grand Opening
WILMINGTON Wine lovers are sure to flock to Renaissance Market off Military Cutoff Road by the end of the month as retail giant Total Wine makes its Wilmington debut.
The grand opening is slated for June 30 to celebrate the superstores 13th opening in North Carolina. VIP attendees will get a sneak peek the day before, during a ribbon cutting.

The market boasts a selection of more than 8,000 wines and 2,500 beers and will carry an array of local vendors.
Store manager Dawn Ward said grand opening activities are planned for the whole weekend, including local wineries and breweries on site offering tastings. The details of the day-to-day events are still being confirmed.
Between 20 to 30 staff will be on payroll throughout the year, with additional seasonal employees on board during the peak summer months, Ward added.
Originating in Delaware in 1991 as the brainchild of brothers David and Robert Trone, Total Wine operates over 230 stores across the country. Before this store, the closest one in operation to Wilmington was Myrtle Beach and opened in 2019.
The local 22,700-square-foot space, formerly Earth Fare, was completely reconstructed, including demolition of existing walls and ceilings and improved lighting. Contractors also built walk-in coolers and a humidor for cigars and tobacco products.
