Dry grainy, tasty tannins with balancing acidity. Medium-full body. Exceptionally long finish with subtle notes unfolding. Impressive depth of savory, dark fruits. Blend of 91% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot. To Kalon is, by many evaluations, the most storied vineyard in Napa and the United States. Storied enough for lawsuits abound about the use of its name, even the boundaries it includes.
No question, Robert Mondavi has significant part of To Kalon, and this is a flagship bottling of its fruit. If you are into wine scores, The Reserve consistently scores in the mid-90s plus. At four years, this is just entering its best drinking window. As a wine writer I am forcedforced!to drink it early, although I did hold this in my wine fridge for a year. Confession: I have the 2017 version in the cellar now and intend to hold it until next Thanksgiving-Christmas season, when I will dare to drink it young again.

The classicism here starts with the looks even, a deep claret with shimmering scarlet hues. The nose fills not just the glass but in a matter of minutes, the room emanates with superb fruit and sexy oak. An explosion of deep, dark fruits and iron-clad tannins define the palate profile, all delivered in a velvet gloves caress. The finish goes on past the minute mark, as the wine persists effortlessly with sublime berries and graphite minerality. No doubt its built to age, while it can be thoroughly enjoyable now with breathing, and substantial steaks, along with rich, rich fare.

NVWE Notes: In really great years Mondavi almost always makes great Cabernet and 2016 is one of their classic vintages. The aromas are a dense, tightly focused melange of Cassis, black raspberry, sour red cherry, pomegranate syrup, crushed dark rose, dried herb, tobacco, leather, cedar and mace scents poised above a drying mineral undercurrent. Despite all its savory counterpoints the wine remains fruit-centric on the palate, where substantial yet highly polished tannins bring a chiseled raciness to the mouth-feel. The finish is extremely long, fruit dominant and never less than satisfying. Truly dinner-worthy now, it will reward at least six year years of cellaring and should prove long-lived.
