Now that youve gotten your plums, its time to prepare them for winemaking. The process is quite simple.
First, you need to pick through the fruits, find damaged or rotten fruits and discard them.
Next, you must use clean water to wash your plums. During the process, remove the stem and leaves.
Pro Tip: Dont wash too hard so you dont peel off the skin from the fruit.
Afterward, boil your plum to sterilize and soften it. When it cools down, pour away the water and use clean hands to squeeze out the stones to get the plum-mush for the wine.

Wine and viticulture technician programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. For some programs, students must be at least 19 years of age on the first day of classes.
Post-graduate wine and viticulture programs, such as wine business management and wine and beverage management, will require completion of a hospitality diploma or degree program.

In order for the fruit must to ferment effectively, it should be properly flavoured by adding water, sugar syrup and yeast nutrient. After flavouring, pour the must into the demijohn and add the previously grown mother yeast. Finally, add the yeast nutrient. It will enable the proper yeast proliferation, quick start of fermentation, full fermentation, and, as a result, the proper concentration of alcohol and the right aroma of the wine. Close the demijohn with a stopper with a glass airlock, and set aside to a warm place. Do not forget to pour water into the glass airlock.

How Do You Know When Its Finished Fermenting
Its finished fermenting when you tap the edge of the glass and no bubbles appear. However, this is not a hard and fast rule. Fermenting can stop or slow greatly due to fluctuations in temperatures.
A cold spell can slow fermenting, while a sudden warm-up can kick start it once more. This can lead to blowing corks in bottled wine, but you shouldnt have that problem if youre using the balloons or plastic wrap.

Can You Use Regular Yeast To Make Wine
Wine yeast can be hard to find unless you order it online or are lucky enough to be near a brewing supply store. Its worth the trouble to find it. It makes a much better tasting wine and it works better when making a higher alcohol content wine.
However, you can use regular bread yeast but it wont taste as good. Ive made juice wine with both and while the wine yeast version is far superior, the other is still drinkable. If youre merely experimenting with winemaking and just want to make something to give you a buzz, regular yeast will do it.

Now, more than ever, more and more women are entering the industry and taking leadership positions.
It is a space where you can always be learning something new, every single daywhether its out in a vineyard, or through online courses, an internship at a winery, or from a mentor figure. Back then, the industry was still extremely male-dominant. And 40 years ago, women in wine were few and far between.;

If you are now where I was when I was in my early 20s, trust me when I say there are a ton of opportunities within the industry during harvest time. Everybody hires seasonal staff ranging from people who have been making wine for years, to people who are just starting out and eager to learn. This is a great way to just jump in and see if its something you enjoyand if you cant take the luxury of taking a quarter off from your regular job or school, there are so many books and great online resources for you to peruse the meantime.

One of the most important skills a winemaker can possess is creativity. The key is having the imagination to create in your mind a wine and later the skill to realise it in the winery says Fernando Mora, DipWSET, a boutique winemaker in Spain who started his life as an engineer but moved into winemaking after visiting several local wineries. Because winemaking is an art as well as a science, having the ability to think outside the box and improvise when needed are critical skills to be successful.

The taste of a wine is easily affected by many factors: The weather, the climate, and the harvest can vary so much year to year. Once you find a bottle you like, if you buy it next year, it may taste different from what you remember.
When I first got into wine, I had a bottle of a 2005 côtes du rhône, and I loved it. It smelled like olives, and it was the first wine that was really savory in my life. I bought more and the vintage changed; it smelled like something else and it wasnt the same delicious olive wine, Puckette recalls.
Puckette acknowledges that this is complicated even difficult but also says its part of the beauty of wine. Wine is one of the only things out there that we put in our bodies that we allow to be expressive of the time in which it was grown. It forces us to accept that things change, she says. I think when people start getting into wine, thats the magic that they discover. The thing that makes wine so hard is ultimately the thing that makes wine so good.
