Will Drinking Wine Make You Gain Weight

Calorie breakdown of Thanksgiving wine

That depends. If you have a regular after-work wine sipping habit, cutting back could contribute to weight loss, since the alcohol does add extra calories to your daily calorie count . That said, a single 5-ounce serving of wine has fewer calories than a glass of soda and not much more than a glass of OJ, so it can be part of a healthy diet without causing weight gain as long as you dont go overboard.

One word of caution: Drinking alcohol can lead to more snacking or poor food choices, which can cause weight gain, says clinical dietitian Becky Kerkenbush, MS, RD. Its a lot easier to overdo it on cheese and crackers or handfuls of bar snacks when your inhibitions are lower.

Stick to one glass, avoid excess snacking, and watch your intake of other high-cal drinks throughout the day, and the calories in wine shouldnt have much of an impact on your weight.

Calories Per Gram For Alcohol

It should come as no surprise that alcohol contains a lot of calories per gram. A gram of alcohol contains 7 calories, higher than carbohydrates, which have 4 calories in a gram. This essentially means that there are sweet wines that have a fewer number of calories than dry wines. Dry wines generally have an alcohol content ranging between 11% and 14%.

These fizzy beverages are ideal for celebrations, which is why it’s so common to toast with sparkling wine at weddings. Examples of sparkling wines include Champagne, prosecco, Lambrusco and vinho verde .

Sparkling wine is classified in terms of its dryness or sweetness. If the label says “natural” it’s very dry, while a brut is dry, per the Wine Institute. Sec and demi-sec sparkling wines are sweet, according to the Wine Institute.

Sparkling wine is sometimes used in cocktails. Mix orange juice with prosecco or Champagne for a mimosa, for instance.

Understanding The Calorie Content In Wines

The fermentation process begins once the wine grapes are picked from the vineyard and crushed into juice. This is how yeast consumes the sugar in grape juice and changes it to alcohol. The amount of sugar transformed is determined by the vintner and the kind of wine being produced. If fermentation is stopped before all of the alcohol has been converted into sugar, there will be more remaining sugar, resulting in a sweet wine. A dry wine is produced when there is little or no residual sugar.

Sugar is a carbohydrate, as you are undoubtedly aware of all of the low carb information available. As a result, the number of carbohydrates in any given wine is determined by the amount of residual sugar. These carbohydrates have roughly four calories per gram in wine. The other component of the equation that adds to the calorie count in a glass of wine is alcohol. It has around seven calories per gram.

How Sweet Is Your Wine

Drier wines are likely to have a lower calorie count than sweet wines. Wines are generally grouped into three levels of sweetness: dry, semi-sweet , and sweet. However, when referring to the sweetness of champagne, different terms are used: extremely dry champagnes are called brut, dry ones are called sec, and sweet ones are called doux.

A wines dryness or sweetness depends on how much of its grape sugars have been fermented into alcohol a dry wine has all of its sugar content fermented, while a sweet wine would have most of its grape sugar intact. Because of this, sweet wines typically have a lower alcohol content than dry wines, unless they are fortified.

What Affects Wine Calories

Unless youre drinking water, just about everything we eat or drink has calories in it, but thats not bad news. Calories have a bad rep because many people believe that its unhealthy but thats not really true.

Calories are basic units of energy in food that we need for our organs to work. Unfortunately, taking in too many calories could turn into fat.

Calories could come from fat, protein, carbohydrates, sugar, and starch. With wine, calories come from the sugar found in grapes. The more sugar in a grape, the more calories in a bottle of wine. Knowing the kind of grapes used would be a good clue but lets be real when were at the store, well be wondering if the wine is good, not about what grapes its made of!

One easy way to check wine calories is by checking the alcohol content. Alcohol and calorie content are directly proportional to each other since both of these come from the same source . More than the grapes used, different types of wine will come with different calorie counts.

150ml glass = 100 cals. Will let you do the maths as my brain isn’t working today. The diet I do is calorie-counting, and also eating things with less than 5% fat – apart from one treat a day of 100 cals.

There are about 600 calories in a bottle of wine, give or take. The problem is that it takes no energy to digest wine, compared to food with the equivalent calorific value, so you can’t just match one up against the other. You have to drink a bit less wine.
