What Happened To Christian Brothers Winery In Napa Valley

Although wine is produced in all 50 United States, California is the fourth-largest producer of wine in the world, and Napa Valley is the heart of wine country. Christian Brothers Winery relocated to the Napa Valley from Martinez in 1932, during prohibition. They were permitted to produce wine for sacramental religious purposes during this time,

Family Owned Napa Valley Wineries

Most locals and visitors see Napa Valley vineyards as being rich with history and growing from family roots. Some of the vineyards are owned by faceless corporations, but there are still family-owned vineyards in the region.

  • Boeschen Vineyards is one of the smallest vineyards, with only seven acres, that focuses entirely on creating the perfect Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Burgess Cellars is owned by the Burgess family and welcomes visitors for tastings and tours of the picturesque tranquility of the hillside vineyard and valley beyond.
  • Hess Winery, owned by the Hess family, is over 900 acres, about two-thirds of which is undeveloped land left to promote biodiversity adjacent to the vineyards.
  • Jarvis Winery features a natural spring, caves and event spaces. Tours are limited to offer full attention and small, welcoming experiences to visitors.

Planning A Trip To France

Green fingers are hereditary

Their son Monty is as motivated as his parents in all things green, is about to study agriculture and is now staying at the property and pitching in to help with big plans for the land.

One orchard has been planted already and another is planned, and a lot of time and effort is spent putting in hedges and replanting trees in the forest

There are plenty of opportunities to explore the vineyards or enjoy some of the many activities along the River Charente. There is always something to do cooking, growing veg, walking dogs, drinking wine, socialising, markets. But running the château , doing renovations and looking for antiques that fit in with the property, take up all of Miriam and Jonos spare time.

The château

Theres lots happening in the fields and forests then, but what about the property?

La Salle was inhabited since before the 12th century when the Saliens settled there.

When Mariam and Jono first saw the château, it was a little larger than they wanted, but because everything else apart from its size was perfect, they decided to buy it.

A historical building, but not a museum

When they moved in, they completely renovated, with all the plaster removed and the floors taken up and with 15 local builders called in to help.

The History Of The Christian Brothers Winery

In addition to the gold rush and prohibition, Brother Timothy Diener was one of the driving forces who transformed Napa Valley into the wine destination it is today. After Prohibition, the brother transitioned from a Catholic school science teacher to the orders winery chemist. The religious brothers were growing grapes for their tables and religious purposes but soon initiated the Christian Brothers production into a commercial brand, which successfully became a major producer of wine and brandy. Christian Brother Timothy even became the face of the brand and was the cell master for nearly the entire time of commercial wine production. The commercial business was eventually sold in 1989 to Heublein, but the altar wines are still produced by the order under the name Mont La Salle.

Rebecca Yerger Memory Lane: The Christian Brothers Mont La Salle Retreat

  • REBECCA YERGER

The Christian Brothers Mount La Salle Winery on Mount Veeder.

Evoking thoughts of an early California castle with its striking edifice prominently visible from various vantage points along Redwood Road in Napa, the Mont La Salle chapel and its companion buildings are the setting for the serenity of the Christian Brothers retreat.

Nestled in the Mt. Veeder area, this Napa Valley icon was designed nearly 90 years ago to tend to two types of spiritsthe development and growth of the human spirit and its faith, as well as the production of wines.

The current site of the retreat is a portion of its former Mt. Veeder property. At one time, it also included what is now the Hess Collection Winery. Decades before the Christian Brothers established their Mont La Salle campus, this vineyard and winery estate had been established around 1903 by a German immigrant named Theodore Gier

During Prohibition, Gier managed to get himself into a lot of trouble with the law and its enforcers. For instance, he tried to transport his wine, which was illegal. As a result, among a number of other issues, the Gier wine estate was listed for sale.

The Christian Brothers found the Mt. Veeder estate to be a suitable location for a new religious institution. The order purchased the former Gier wine estate in May 1930. The property included a stone winery, 100,000 gallons of fine, aged wine and well maintained vineyards.

Christian Bros Winery Is Sold To Heublein

Christian Brothers, a 107-year-old Napa Valley winery owned by a Catholic teaching order, was acquired Tuesday by the Heublein division of Grand Metropolitan PLC of Great Britain in the largest winery sale in U.S. history.

Both sides declined to disclose the price, but sources said it may approach $150 million. It dwarfs the previous top price paid for a U.S. winery of $40 million that Suntory of Japan plunked down for Chateau St. Jean in Sonoma County five years ago.

Heublein, based in Farmington, Conn., is acquiring all physical holdings of Christian Brothers, including the historic Greystone Cellars and 1,200 acres of prime Napa Valley vineyards, as well as all trademarks and brands. Heublein already owns historic Napa Valley wineries Inglenook Vineyards and Beaulieu Vineyard, as well as Almaden of Madera.

Brother David Brennan, president of Christian Brothers, in a prepared statement, said, The decision to sell . . . was a difficult one, but this action allows the Brothers to give the highest priority to their educational works.

Supporting Schools

More than 11,000 Christian Brothers teach in more than 1,600 schools in 80 countries, and the schools are supported by the sale of wines and brandy. Cathedral High School in Los Angeles is among those high schools supported by proceeds from the winery.

Meanwhile, wine maker Tom Eddy helped revive the wine fortunes with a string of top-quality wines.

CHRISTIAN BROS. WINERY

Christian Brothers Wine Gains Respect

Tom Eddy filled the glass with a golden chardonnay and a large amount of pride and said “That’s my Paris-tasting wine,” a wine he thinks just might beat out the best of Burgundy.

Even if he’s off-base, the bragging itself takes nerve: Eddy is the wine maker for The Christian Brothers, a label most wine drinkers expect to see on jug wines, sherries and non-vintage blends that cost $6 or less, not on world- class wine.

Because of that reputation, Eddy doesn’t honestly expect to be in Paris or other fancy showdowns soon. “We don’t get those invitations,” the wine maker said in an interview at the Walt Disney World Village Wine Festival held earlier this month.

And the public, he said, is harder to win over than professionals. Winery tests found that in blind tastings, consumers who picked Christian Brothers over another winery were sure in their choice until the labels were revealed then they wanted to qualify their choices.

Still, Eddy is serious about making wines that match the best of France or California. His “Paris-tasting” wine is serious too, a 1985 reserve chardonnay that has a soft, very fragrant bouquet and remarkably smooth texture. The chardonnay, to be released this fall, will cost between $9 and $10, the most expensive wine Christian Brothers has made.

Today the bulk of the winery’s production is aperitifs, dessert wines, brandies and sherries, the Mont La Salle generic wines and Chateau La Salle, a sweet proprietary blend of muscat grapes .
