Where To Buy L Mawby Wine

Don't Miss

A Tasting With Mike Laing Of Mawby And Biglittle

L Mawby Vineyards: Disgorging (Dégorgement) Explained

We were going up to the loft at The Royce and it we were going to do a wine tasting with Mike Laing who I had thought was the winemaker at Mawby Wine, as I knew that he and his brother were making wines in a side building off of the parking lot at Mawby with their own label bigLITTLE. I was kind of right and kind of wrong, as you will note later. I went back in the archives and the first of multiple articles about Mawby was back in 23 October 2012 October Birthdays and a Dinner and I had only begun writing my blog in May 2012, but I had been drinking wine for decades before then. I was even surprised that they were making the house bubbly for The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Years back, there was a group of us bloggers that would get a theme and we would all write about that theme, and it would take us out of our comfort zone, and the theme was Once Upon a Time and I used the story of Lawrence Mawby and his almost fairy tale story of really being the impetus for the Leelanau Peninsula, and yes, there were one or two before him, but not with his drive and moxie.

Mawby Michigans Sparkling Wine

3rd July 2015

In 1973 we planted our first vines and established our vineyards at the Elm Valley location in 1976. These vineyards have been increased until today the property is fully planted with about 20 acres of vines.

Larry Mawby has been making our L.Mawby traditional method sparkling wines since our first sparkling winemaking in 1984. Since 2010, Mike Laing has been responsible for the M. Lawrence cuve close method sparkling wines.

Varieties we grow include pinot noir, vignoles, pinot gris, regent, riesling, chardonnay and pinot meunier. We also purchase significant amounts of chardonnay and pinot noir from other growers here on the Leelanau Peninsula for our L.Mawby wines. We source for M.Lawrence from Leelanau Peninsula, southwest Michigan and California.

Mawby is open for tasting sessions throughout the year. If youre in the USA you can also freely join the FIZZ club and get benefits such as receiving three selections of four bottles each every year.

Mawby Wines In Northern Michigan Adds New Owners Expands Its Offerings

A northern Michigan winemaker since 1973, Mawby Wines in Suttons Bay on the Leelanau Peninsula has added to its ownership group, expanded its food and wine pairing events, and in January launched a strategic rebranding.

We had different offerings under Mawby Wines L. Mawby, and M. Lawrence but then we realized through our rebranding process that almost without exception everyone refers to us as Mawby, says Larry Mawby, founder and now co-owner of L. Mawby Vineyards. Im getting older, and it was time to step back a bit and let the next generation take over.

Specializing in sparkling wines, the vintner, which refers to its line of 15 offerings as the United Bubbles of Mawby, is looking forward to a banner year. Since 2016, it has annually produced around 20,000 cases on 30 acres of vineyards, along with leasing nearby land for grape production and buying grape juice from other farmers.

That comes on the heels of two challenging years in 2014 and 2015 when many of the grapes in northern Michigan couldnt be harvested due to a late fall hail and other poor weather conditions.

Mike Laing, and his brother, Peter, who combined have 20 years of experience with Mawby, have been named partners of the winemaking business. After growing up in Ann Arbor, their parents planted grapes in Leelanau County in 2003, and they started selling their fruit to Mawby in 2005.
