What Is Alcohol Ink
Alcohol inks are solid-based dyes that can be used on any nonporous surface. They works well on glassware, ceramics, metal, tin, plastic, and glossy paper. Wood or regular card stock paper won’t work well because their surfaces are porous. The product comes in a bottle with a dropper type dispenser, which makes it easy to use. Do note that it dries very quickly, so you’ll need to work quickly to create your design.

Wash And Dry Your Glasses
Its essential to ensure that all of the dishes youll be customizing are clean, dry, and devoid of any visible film or other residue. So clean your glasses first with soap and water, let them dry, and then wipe the outside of them one more time with rubbing alcohol. Why Do You Need To Seal Posca Pens On Glass
The biggest reason to seal your Posca pens on glass is that they may fade or get washed away. It can really be a problem, especially if youre planning to use the design for an important event like weddings, engagements, and other formal occasions where everything should happen according to plan!
It isnt very pleasant when something breaks up all of a sudden at the very last moment.
Thats why people even want to seal Sharpie on non-porous surfaces, though they are already using a permanent marker.
In the same way, though the brand claims it to be permanent, when you use it on a non-porous surface like glass, it can cause fading of the art projects due to lightfastness.
Besides, the brand also claims that you can remove the ink from such surfaces if you want. So, people want to seal it permanently to avoid any unwanted situation like fading the ink color.
Since we need to use glass items like wine glasses, dinnerware, etc., in our daily lives, you should seal the design to use them longer. Even itll also make those designs dishwasher proof.
Safety While Sealing Alcohol Inks
Sealing your alcohol ink pieces requires the same precautions as creating said-pieces. A properly ventilated area is a must! Breathing in the fumes from the different sealants on this list is not ideal this is true of both spray and brush-on variants.
Wearing PPE is also highly recommended protect your skin with gloves and your clothes with an apron so that you dont have a very sticky situation on your hands later on!

A Few Notes About Using Alcohol Inks On Glass:
- Before starting your project, clean the glass surface and remove any labels using a mild dishwashing detergent. Let it dry completely before beginning the DIY to get the cleanest look.
- Alcohol ink stains! The good news is that it wears off pretty quickly. You can wear rubber gloves to prevent this, but I find it difficult to grip the glass when doing so.
- Don’t worry about mistakes. You can clean them up with regular rubbing alcohol from the drugstore.
- Do not use this on glassware that will touch food or beverages. It should only be used for decorative purposes.
- The combination of alcohol ink and compressed air creates a lot of fumes! Make sure you are in a well ventilated area when indoors or outside (when the weather is nice.
- Smooth glass containers work best for the spatter technique. If you want to use cut or embossed glass, it’d be best to look into other methods.
The Secret To Sharp Wavy Lines
Im crazy about those lines! They are easy and hard to make at the same time. In fact, thats something the alcohol ink does by itself with a little help from you.
The sharp edge appears when the ink or isopropyl touches the already dry area. So when you dry the spot with a fan or naturally just move the liquid from side to side, every time letting it dry a few millimeters away from the existing edge.

Diy Glass Project Ideas
Using alcohol ink on thrift store finds is a rewarding hobby, and this project is quick and inexpensive to make! I rescued these brandy snifters from a secondhand store for a whopping 10 cents each. Imagine all of the vases, pottery, and glassware you can buy at a great price to make these!
The dollar store also offers a great variety of glassware. When I checked, they had four votive styles, three vase designs, and clear dinner plates. Since alcohol ink should not be used on items you use to eat, you can decorate the back of the plate, seal it, and use it to display cakes or cookies.

Multiple Panes: If you are painting on glass panes, consider using multiple panes to create a stunning 3D layered effect. As the light shines through the multiple panes and the colors layer over each other, the effects can be truly dramatic!
Live, Laugh, Love: Consider flipping over one pane and applying a vinyl saying to the glass to add even more spice to your project.
White Backing: Alcohol inks on glass really pop when they have a white backing, so if you are working on a picture frame, consider putting a bright white surface behind it.
Let There Be Light: You are essentially creating stained glass with these techniques, and nothing looks more beautiful than sunshine light shining through a stained glass window. So make sure you place these works of art in areas that get plenty of bright light to truly enjoy their luster. To create a truly magical effect, fill a glass vase with fairy lights!
Fired Glass: Some artists like to light their artworks on fire, literally. After laying down their inks, while still wet, they will use a lighter to burn off the excess alcohol and create fired glass effects. However, if you do this… please be sure all the proper fire-safety precautions are taken and nothing flammable is anywhere near where you will be working.
