What Happens If No One Is At Home To Sign For The Package When Ups Or Fedex Arrives
They will leave a slip of paper at your door saying that they attempted to deliver. These notices generally have a phone number to call and/or the address of their local depot. In most cases, you can arrange to pick the package up there. If they do not hear from you, they will attempt to delivery it again. After 3 unsuccessful attempts, the wine will be returned to us. In that case, we’re sorry but we’ll need to charge you to ship it again.
How To Package Spirits For Shipping
Same with beer and wine, the packaging requirements for spirits will depend mostly on the way the liquor is being stored. Liquor is an especially unique liquid to ship, as the slightest interference within the transit could compromise the curated taste or worse, waste the product all together. While the glass bottles used for storing liquor are much thicker than wine or beer bottles, theyre still subject to breakage without proper preparation. Some of the general rules for shipping spirits include:
- Prevent Glass from Touching Glass: The easiest way liquor bottles are able to shatter during the delivery is against one another. Choosing to package bottles with cardboard dividers and proper padding to eliminate shuffling is a must when shipping liquor bottles. Boxes going on top of boxes are inevitable during shipping, so make sure to shrink wrap pallets to prevent boxes from shifting.
- Consider Insurance: Liquor is priced at a much higher value than beer or wine, so making sure your shipment is insured is crucial for guaranteeing youre prepared for any issues that come up down the line. Its always better to be safe than sorry, especially when sending spirits.
How Much Does Shipping Cost/h3>
In the mainland US, our shipping costs vary based on the total cost of your purchase and your delivery state. We aim to include the cost of shipping in larger shipments, but sometimes have to charge $9.99 to offset increasing order fulfillment costs. We will make clear before you make your purchase whether shipping is included or $9.99.
Shipments to Alaska and Hawaii have fixed prices of $130 and $70 per package, respectively.

Will Dtc Shipping For Retailers Expand In The Future
While there is a lot of interest among retailers and consumers for DtC shipping opportunities, the map for retailer DtC shipping map is a lot smaller than it is for other entities, particularly wineries. Part of the reason for this is the perception of unfair advantages that a remote retailer might have over local retailers, which leads to demands for laws restricting foreign competition. There is also concern among regulators that they lack the jurisdiction to properly monitor and control retailers located in other states. However, the general success of retailer shipping in the states that do allow it would seem to belie these concerns.
Another issue currently facing the retailer DtC shipping market is the lack of a national policy on whether states can extend discriminatory permissions for local retailers to do DtC shipping, while blocking that permission for remote retailers. The 2005 Supreme Court case Granholm v. Heald established the modern jurisprudence around DtC shipping of alcohol, primarily that states could not allow local shipping of wine while prohibiting it from out-of-state sources. However, that case only mentioned producers and it left open the question of retailers. There have been efforts over the years to extend Granholm to retailers, but they have been unsuccessful so far and even faced increasing pushback in just the last year or two.

Is This A Wine Club
If you’re into wine, you probably know that “wine club” usually means you pay a subscription and the club sends regular shipments of wine. We aren’t doing that.
Instead, Angels put money in their piggy bank . And they can come and shop at the site with that money as often or as little as they want.
Most of our customers like this way better since they choose what wine they get and when they get it. But in the more general sense, we are a group of people who really enjoy wine. So if “wine club” just meant a club that likes wine, we’d be that.

Whats The Best Way To Start A Wine Ecommerce Website
If youre starting from scratch, your first step is to identify your target audience. Then, like any ecommerce business, youll need to determine which types of merchandise youll sell.
From there, you need to connect with a wholesaler.
Once youve built your website, select an online shopping cart and payment processing provider.
Next, decide how youll distribute your products and if it makes sense to invest in an online shipping software.
If you already have a brick-and-mortar location, then you only need to worry about building a user-friendly site, setting up an online shopping cart and payment system, and developing an efficient shipping process.
How To Ship Alcohol Overseas
You’ve fallen in love with a Bordeaux produced at a small French vineyard, and you can’t imagine life without it. Unluckily for you, however, “once you’re changing countries, gets exponentially more difficult,” says Weinberg. First, Weinberg advises, you will have to “make sure the product can be legally shipped into the destination without a permit.” You can check this guide to see your state’s individual regulations. If you don’t, your “product could be seized, quarantined, or destroyed,” warns Weinberg. And no one wants that, do they? Shipping out of the U.S. into another country will require you to brush up on state and federal export rules and the import rules of whichever country you’re sending it to . Good luck. Once again, it’s probably best to go through a retailer or distributor.
Weinberg also recommends that you confirm with the retailer or distributor if any taxes or duties need to be paid on the product you intend to ship. If so, they should be able to advise you on how to pay them, and how much they will cost you. Lastly, “purchase from a reputable dealer who knows the ins and outs of laws, and ideally has experience shipping to your destination of choice,” Weinberg advises.
In short, as much as you might like to personally pick up, wrap and send a bottle of booze as a gift, this is one task better left to professionals.

Licensed Retailer Dtc States
If a retailer receives a DtC license, they may sell out-of-state directly to customers in Alaska, Oregon, Nevada, Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota, Louisiana, West Virginia, Virginia, New Hampshire, Florida, Connecticut and the District of Columbia. However, there are some unique situations:
- Alaska, Florida and D.C. do not require an actual DtC license, but do have a set of DtC compliance rules that must be followed.
- In Nevada, DtC shippers must obtain a Certificate of Compliance. While this certificate is normally for producers, retailers can apply if they send in an affidavit in lieu of a Federal Basic Permit, indicating that they are in good standing with their local alcohol board.
What Happens If Nobody’s There To Accept The Delivery
The shipper will attempt to deliver three times and then they turn into a pumpkin. Ok, not really. But almost. And we’re as frustrated as you are when deliveries don’t go smoothly. Some states will actually destroy your parcel if nobody’s there to receive it 3 times in a row and wasting wine makes everybody angry.

What Temperature Should I Serve My Wines At
Pop the whites into the bottom of the fridge for 30 minutes before you plan to drink them. Don’t OVER-chill or you might lose flavor
Reds should be closer to 65 degrees F. Some people say room temperature but that’s dead wrong if you live in Florida and think room temperature is a balmy 80 degrees. Think room temperature in a nice restaurant where it’s actually a bit chilly.
The general rule here is food you like with wine you like and people you like sharing your wine with. There are a handful of combinations where that won’t work but this rule works 98% of the time.

How To Mail Alcohol Out
When you cross state lines, the shipment of alcohol becomes more difficult. That its because you now must meet the requirements and regulations in both the state youre shipping from and the state youre shipping to.
There is a loophole that helps consumers ship beer, liquor, and wine to other states if that other state permits the shipment of alcohol to consumers. Instead of shipping a bottle from your state to their state, simply find a retailer based in the state youre shipping to and order it from that retailer. That way the retailer wont need to cross state lines and only meet the rules of their states alcohol regulation board.

Become Familiar With Customs Documentation
There are several different certifications and documents you must complete in order to export wine. The TTB website lists the following:
- Certificate of Free Sale.
- Sanitary Statement/Certificate.
- Certificate of Manufacturing Process.
Its the responsibility of the seller to confirm which of the above certificates are required for the country to which they want to import wine.
Selling wine internationally definitely represents a great opportunity for established businesses. But its important to know for sure whether or not the investment will justify the return.
How To Ship Wine: General Overview
First of all, the most important thing to keep in mind is that its illegal for one individual to ship any amount of wine to another person through the mail in the United States, regardless of where you live or whether you try the U.S. Postal Service, UPS, or FedEx.
That doesnt mean you cant send wine to someone but you cant just stuff it in a box and slap a few stamps on it. Unless youre willing to take a big risk and break the law, to ship wine you need to buy it from a company whos certified to deliver it. The good news is, plenty of companies are licensed to ship wine to most states.
Depending on the quantity youre sending and where its going, there could be additional hurdles to overcome. For instance, if you want to send wine to a friend in Oklahoma, youre out of luck: The Sooner State doesnt allow it, and you might be looking at a felony if you get caught trying.
While the law is mostly the same in Delaware, theres one important loophole: If youre a resident of Delaware and youre visiting a winery in a different state, you can send yourself back a few bottles.
The strictest laws, by far, are found in Utah, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, and Delaware. Pay particularly close attention to the rules if youre sending wine to those states. An updated master list of all the state law nuances can be found by searching the alcohol statutes over at The National Conference of State Legislatures website.

Why Usps Wont Allow You To Ship Alcohol
Believe it or not, USPS doesnt allow for the shipment of alcohol because of laws enacted by Prohibition back in the 1920s! Seriously. However, thats not to say USPS will always prohibit the shipment of alcohol going forward. Back in 2013, former Postmaster General Patrick Donahue pitched the idea of allowing USPS to deliver beer, wine and spirits to consumers doorsteps. He claimed that alcoholic beverage deliveries could generate upwards of $50 million a year for the Postal Service. Thats no small amount! Even so, Donahue proposed the idea years ago, and there doesnt seem to be any movement happening in that direction any time soon. So dont get your hopes up.
WaitWasnt Prohibition a Hundred Years Ago?
Just about! The United States enacted Prohibition in 1920, and didnt repeal it until 1933. Theres been a lot of time since then for our country to revise its laws prohibiting the shipment of alcohol. However, the good people on Capitol Hill still havent gotten around to it, for some reason.
Are There Any Exceptions?
For all you hyper-technical individuals out there, there are some exceptions to this rule. USPS allows for the shipment of products containing VERY low levels of alcohol like cold remedies, cooking wine, and mouthwash. However, any liquid containing 0.5% or more alcoholic content is non-mailable. That means pretty much every alcoholic beverage out there, including shipping beer and wine, is a no-go with USPS.

What Sales Tax Rates Are Applied To Dtc Shipments In Hawaii
Hawaii imposes a sales tax on all shipments of wine sold into the state, with a state rate of 4% and local rates ranging from 0-0.5%. However, Hawaii further states that the tax revenue collected from customers is itself part of the basis for the sale, meaning the General Excise Tax must also be assessed on all such customer collected taxes.
