Down Under Wines On The Way Up

The Australian wine industry is experiencing some challenging times, but there are still some surprising benefits for Aussie wine lovers

Thistledown Summer Road Old Vine Grenache, Riverland, South Australia 2020 These are interesting times for Australian wine. And by interesting Im thinking of the supposedly Chinese curse, since Australian wine producers are currently reeling from a near-complete collapse of sales to China, a country that was, until this year, their most valuable export market. The cause is a trade dispute that has led to the Chinese government applying a set of swingeing tariffs on Australian wine. According to figures released last month by the industry association Wine Australia, those tariffs have led to a 77% drop in the value of Australian wine exports to China. Meanwhile, problems in the deep-sea shipping industry are creating big delays for shipments of Australian wines to its other main markets, of which the UK is once again the most important by both value and volume. Still, theres no let-up in demand for Australian wine on the ground on these shores: sales were up by 7% in value in the past year, our appetite for sun-filled fruit-driven reds such as Thistledowns, apparently undimmed.

Winter Park’s Wine On The Way Goes Global

Get wine your way

Right off Orlando Avenue in Winter Park, behind an unassuming beige warehouse sliding door, is a room packed with the most delicious wine in the world. The owners have traveled all over, tasting their way through the best winemaking countries across the globe, so that they can share the best of the best with their customers.

Wine on the Way owners Adam and Gigi Chilvers curate the wine like a collection, but one that could entertain grandiose or lean budgets. Their most prominent slogan is they sell only 90 point or higher rated wine. Their wine selection right now ranges from just $11 to hundreds of dollars, with lots of choices at every price point.

We try to demystify and simplify wine for people, to make it less intimidating, Adam said.

Theyre not about selling a brand or status symbol, its about offering the best through educating their customers and being approachable for all questions, said business partner and friend Eric Kunichika.

Great wines can come in screw top bottles that are $15, he said.

And there isnt a wine in the warehouse that he hasnt tasted. On average, he and his wife Gigi will taste 20 to 30 wines a week. When he travels to wineries, its wine tasting from morning til night. Hes been to nearly every country known for wine making, and has tasted some of the best wines in the world straight from the barrel, before it even hits a bottle.

Research and development is kind of fun, he said with a big smile.

From The Barrel To You

For boutique wines, go direct.

Supermarket wine shelves are devoted to big-name brands, the Barefoots and Apothics of the world. Independent wine stores offer more curated selections, but what about that minuscule-production Syrah you’ve read about but can never seem to find anywhere? Odds are, it’s available almost exclusively direct from the winery.

The truth is that the wine-sales playing field is skewed against small producers. As Jamie Kutch, who makes spectacular single-vineyard Pinots in Sonoma County, says, “Trying to compete with bigger brands, and the incentives they give to wholesalers, is just impossible. None of us — the little artisan boutiques — would be here if we didn’t sell wine direct.”

The good thing is that wine-shipping laws have loosened over time, and these days only six states completely prohibit shipments from out-of-state wineries . Consider the excellent wineries to the right, recognize that there are hundreds more like them to discover, and know that the easiest — and often the only — way to get their wines is to go directly to the winery website.

How It Works

WTSO is proud to do business with hundreds of wineries and distributors online, and we are always looking for new brands to feature on our website. Each bottle that we offer is hand-picked with careful consideration of every aspect of the wine. Once we have chosen a wine that meets the standards that our members have come to expect, we queue it to be featured for sale in our online wine store.

The bottle will then become part of a flash wine sale, wherein we offer that specific bottle for a limited period of time or until it is gone. Due to the high quality and sometimes rare nature of the wines we offer, wine deals online can last as little as one or two hours before selling out.

Regardless of what kind of wine you buy, you can count on free shipping from WTSO with a minimum purchase of any of our wine deals. When you shop from us for discount wines online, we guarantee safe and secure wine distribution and mailing methods. So, that no matter the size of your order, you can rest assured your purchase will arrive fully intact and ready to enjoy.

Over the years, WTSO has made connections with many of the greatest wine sellers, winemakers, and distributors in the world, allowing us to cultivate an unmatched online product selection and pass on significant savings to our members. We are delighted to be able to provide our members with our favorite affordable wines online, from the best French White Bordeaux to sweet American Cabernet Sauvignon to that dry yet easy-drinking Italian Chianti wine.

Why Us

What is The Best Way to Remove Labels from Wine Bottles?

About Pour

Pour opened in 2006 at the corner of W. 75th St. & Amsterdam Avenue on Manhattans Upper West Side. Were guided by a set of basic principles:

Consumers want an easy and enjoyable, versus overwhelming and stuffy, wine purchasing experience.A wine shop should be oriented the way wine consumers think not the way the wine industry thinks.

Ensuring everyday value should be a priority, so wine can be a daily part of lifes pleasures.A focus on unique wines & spirits not found just anywhere, giving customers a sense of discovery.

Staff should constantly educate customers so they feel more comfortable in making their own wine and spirits purchasing decisions. In a nutshell, making the wine buying process fun, interesting and intriguing again is our goal.

Pour is:

INTUITIVE Food pairing and flavor attributes are the foundation of our approach to the wine shopping experience.

Pour makes it easy and enjoyable. Instead of displaying our wines by grape or region or country, our carefully chosen selection puts wines into categories the way consumers think what is this wine like? , how does it taste?, and will it work with my menu? are the most frequently asked questions. So we display the wines in a way that answers these questions.

VALUE-DRIVEN At Pour, we work hard to find wines that give you the best value for your money. In fact, 80% of our wines are $25 and under. Regardless of our price, all our wines give you exceptional value.
