ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In 1982, the Cheese Place first opened its doors. 40 years later, The Wine and Cheese Place, as its called now, has established itself as one of the go-to places for all things wine, beer, liquor, and of course cheese.
We sat down at their store in Kirkwood, to talk about the milestone. Aaron Zwicker is the co-owner and wine manager and has helped countless people find the perfect bottle. He joined us on the podcast along with owner Vijay Shroff to talk about serving the St. Louis community. We dive deep into how they choose what to put on store shelves, how they get their hands on the labels youre going to want on your dinner table and how their commitment to the industry allows them to partner with some of our favorite brands like Side Project Brewing for exclusive releases.

The Wine & Cheese Place Will Open Spirit Wine & Craft In South St Louis This Weekend
The Wine & Cheese Place is adding to its four existing retail locations with an entirely new concept: Spirit Wine & Craft. The first store will have a soft opening on Saturday, May 21, in the Southampton space formerly occupied by Craft Beer Cellar and Ursa Minor at 5760 Chippewa St. in the Southampton neighborhood of South City.
At 2,800 square feet, Spirit Wine & Craft will cover a smaller footprint than the typical Wine & Cheese Place store , and will feature a more focused selection of wines, spirits, craft beers and artisanal foods including cheese, mustards, pickles, jams and chips. Anything you’d want for a picnic is basically going to be here, said owner Vijay Shroff.
The Wine & Cheese Place has a long-running partnership with The Living Room, which will roast coffee beans for sale at Spirit Wine & Craft. Shroff said customers will see local products highlighted throughout the food selection.
Shroff said that Spirit Wine & Craft is an evolution of the original Wine & Cheese Place concept, and better reflects the focus of our offering, which is not just wine but a lot of craft beer, a lot of spirits, plus some gourmet foods.

Sweet, funky, meaty and savory are some of the words i would describe the Craigellachie. They rank in my top 10 distilleries in Scotland, just for the description above. They are very complex and layered expressions and well worth the price of admission.

The new space, while not upgrading much in terms of square footage, will allow the shop to expand its curbside pickup system, as well as offering more parking and what Shroff says is better visibility for the shop.
While The Wine and Cheese Place has enjoyed its home in Ballwin for over two decades, Shroff says that the new location is the right fit for the shop, allowing them to serve old customers and also reach new ones.
“Town and County has been really welcoming to us,” he says.

The St Louis Wine Cheese And Specialty Grocery Shop Thrives On Connecting With Customers

“I was three when it opened, but I remember going into the Roasting House and the Cheese Place with my dad on the weekends and smelling freshly roasted nuts and coffee,” Shroff says. “It was just such a sensory experience as a child and brings up a memory of my dad.”
Now in its 40th year, the Wine & Cheese Place has been creating those memories for its customers since it was founded by Amos Kedmey as two small businesses a little cheese and specialty grocery shop, the Cheese Place, and a small coffee and nut roastery, the Roastery on the east side of Clayton in 1982. As Shroff, who has owned the business since 2019, explains, both the Cheese Place and the Roastery began very small but grew into themselves organically thanks to the changing tastes and preferences of their customers. Because the mission of the businesses was to be a place of interaction and conversation between the shopkeepers and guests, customers were able to influence the products the stores carried. As European wines became more popular throughout the 1980s, for instance, the Cheese Place increased the size of its wine collection to include bottles that customers requested.
“We like to be ahead of the game, but the dialogue we’ve had with our customers has helped us to recognize trends that they’ve seen,” Shroff says. “We have a dedication to our customers to satisfy that.”
