Beautiful Michigan Wine Country

My daughters took me on a trip to Michigan for my 80th birthday. We stayed at the Chateau Chantal on Old Mission Penisula. The room was lovely with a sitting room attached. The morning brunch with local products was delicious. We had a guided tour of the winery and learned much about wines. We toured the countryside, went to wine tastings and shopped in quaint little boutiques. We had a great time even though the weather wasn’t very cooperative. I would highly recommend this Bed & Breakfast and this beautiful spot.

The winery itself and the views from the winery were breathtaking. The manager of the tasting room was very knowledgable and helpful while wine tasting. My sister and I enjoyed every wine we tried. We will definitely go back here.

Wine Country Inn Palisades Colorado

Were ALMOST cheating by listing the Wine Country Inn in Colorados wine region, the Palisades. This winery hotel is not owned and operated by a vineyard, but the Victorian style hotel sits in the middle of 21 acres of vines that produce grapes, which are crushed and bottled as the Inns signature label wines. And, it is adjacent to two wineries. So, it can still be deemed as a winery hotelat least according to us.

The Five Avas Of Michigan

Fennville, in Southwestern Michigan, was the states first AVA, established in 1981. And, it was only the third AVA established in the US. Its also Michigans smallest AVA and benefits from Lake Michigans lake effect, which moderates winter and summer temperature extremes. The lake effect also lengthens the growing season.

Lake Michigan Shore, also in Southwestern Michigan, established two years after Fennville, now encompasses the Fennville AVA. It also benefits from the lake effect. The rolling glacial hills within the district move the flow of cool air, lowering the risk of vineyard damage caused by pockets of frost.

The Leelanau Peninsula in Northwestern Lower Michigan became the states second AVA in 1982. It also benefits from the lake effect from Lake Michigan, Grand Traverse Bay, and Lake Leelanau.

Established in 1987, the Old Mission Peninsula, lies across Grand Traverse Bay from the Leelanau Peninsula. Here spring arrives a little later, and fall lingers longer. The summers are not as hot and humid as other parts of Michigan. Lake Michigans lake effect plays a larger role in moderating temperature extremes. Karen MacNeil, the author of The Wine Bible, says, Old Mission Peninsula is one of Michigans most important AVAs.

The Tip of the Mitt is Michigans newest AVA, just approved in 2016. Its climate is less extreme than the south, benefiting from a longer frost-free growing season.

Tour Michigans Wine Country In 4 Days

In recent years, Michigan has gained a reputation for crafting award-winning wines. Wineries are scattered throughout the state, within Michigans two principal winemaking regions in the Lower Peninsulaalong the Southwest Coast and around Grand Traverse Bayand a few in the Upper Peninsula near Escanaba and Manistique. The American Viticultural Association recognizes four distinct growing regions that comprise Michigans wine country: the Old Mission Peninsula and the Leelanau Peninsula in the north plus Fennville and the Lake Michigan Shore in the south. Collectively, the Great Lake State is home to some 120 wineries and tasting rooms. In this region, the winter months produce lake-effect snow, which protects the vines and extends the growing season for up to a month.

Wine connoisseurs should take at least a week, preferably during summer or fall, to sample the states finest wineries. This four-day itinerary will get you started.

Where To Go In Michigan Wine Country: Day Trip From Chicago With Grape And Grain Tours

These 9 Beautiful Wineries In Michigan Are A Must

Hi everyone!

As mentioned in my previous Michigan post, I was so excited to come back out here again and this time go to the actual wineries in the area from Chicago via Grape and Grain Tours.

So instead of Amtrak, this time I got a shuttle from Chicago to all the wineries we went to. So effortless! The Grape and Grain Tour shuttle picks you up in the West Loop and goes with you to every stop, so you can leave items you brought or buy during each visit. Definitely helpful if you take a tour in the colder months like we did you can ditch your coat and take a load off!

Next stop, Free Run Cellars. Like Tabor Hill, their grounds are so pretty and we sat in a little tasting room that had windows all around to see the view. This time, we had a flight of wine. My favorite of the three was the Cabernet Sauvignon too! Seemed to be a red kind of day haha. Besides wine, you can also make a cheese board to go with your tasting via their seasonal items for purchase.
