David Duncan On Sustainability And The Future Of Silver Oak Cellars

Silver Oak Cellars’ two signature Cabernet Sauvignon wines

Silver Oak Cellars is a family-owned, Napa Valley winery that was started by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer in 1972. The company currently has two wineries, one in Oakville in the Napa Valley and one in Healdsburg in the Alexander Valley. Its devoted entirely to the production of cabernet sauvignon wines. It also owns the Ovid and Soda Canyon Ranch vineyards in the Napa Valley.

A sister company, Twomey Cellars, which the family established in 1999, is devoted to the production of Pinot Noir wines. Twomey has wineries in Calistoga, Healdsburg, Philo and Dundee, in Oregons Willamette Valley.

Today the company is run by Rays sons. David Duncan is the President and CEO and Tim Duncan serves as Executive Vice President.

Silver Oak is one of Californias most iconic producers. Its wines have achieved near cult status among enthusiasts. Its two wineries are considered the greenest wineries in the world, exhibiting a commitment to sustainability and minimizing its environmental footprint long before such objectives became fashionable. Its also the only winery to possess their own oak cooperage.

Recently I sat down with David Duncan to talk about Silver Oak and Twomey, their contrasting wine making philosophies and their future prospects.

We also trying to be one of the global leaders on viticulture, which is probably the most underestimated factor on what ends up in the bottle.

Bone dry, this wine shows the soft, dusty tannins and herbal flavors that classically mark Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It has an elegant structure housing flavors of blackberries, currants, sage, tobacco and cedar, and should develop in the bottle over the next 68 years.

Best Overall: 2016 Chteau Pape Clment Pessac

Silver Oak canvas printlimited edition wine printWine ...

Its hard to overstate the brilliance of the 2016 Château Pape Clément. The bottle is named after Pope Clement V, who owned the vineyard when he was just a scrappy upstart Archbishop of Bordeaux in the early 14th century, meaning the vineyards been in operation for over 700 years. Operated by esteemed French winemaker Bernard Magrez, this cabernet is a liquid luxury thats impossible to resist .

Complex and beguiling, this wine boasts a diverse flavor palate of dark fruits, cherry and fig, along with black truffles, forest floor, tobacco, and mocha and vanilla-tinged oak spices. It’s medium to full-bodied with fine-textured tannins, silken fruit and a long, elegant finish. In a word, exquisite.

Heitz Cellar is a jewel among Napa Valley wine producers, and Marthas Vineyard cabernet is their flagship bottle. Aged five years in French Limousin oak barrels, this wine is made with intensely purple grape berries from an exclusive Oakville vineyard situated within its unique micro-climatemeaning this is one exemplary wine. Every vintage since 1966 is coveted by collectors, but 2014 was a particularly good year for this cabernet.

Twomey 2019 Estate Sauvignon Blanc

$ 24.99

Silver Oak’s Twomey Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from two family-owned estate vineyards. Limited new release. The Twomey Sauvignon Blanc beautifully combines citrus, pear and green apple characters in a complex and balanced expression of this exciting varietal. It has a light straw color and a nose of grapefruit rind, juniper berry, star fruit, green apple, pear and elderberry flower. It has a juicy, fruit-sweet attack with notes of honey and citrus on the palate. The wine has a long, lingering, fresh fruit finish. Notes from the winery: We grow Sauvignon Blanc on two estate properties: our vineyard surrounding our Calistoga winery and our Westside Road Vineyard below our winery in Russian River Valley. The soil and climate differences at these two sites gives us a range of expressions of Sauvignon Blanc that we blend to create our unique style. The Napa Valley fruit offers us a deft balance of citrus and mineral elements which is complemented beautifully by the guava and tropical notes from our Sonoma County fruit. With careful viticulture and judicious winemaking, we capture the essence of the soil and sunny climate in which these grapes are grown, and the minerality and freshness so becoming to this varietal.

Meyer Family Cellars 2018 ‘fluffy Billows’ Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville

$ 49.99

Just released and sourced exclusively. Fashioned by Matt Meyer, son of Silver Oak Cellars owners Bonny and Justin Meyer. About as limited as Silver Oak Wines and equally delicious, this rarity is an irresistible offer at a fantastic price.

Tasting Notes: “The Fluffy Billows is a good old American Cabernet that is polished and elegant. The aromas spring to life with ripe plum and blackberries jumping out of the glass. Sourced from the same vineyard as the Spitfire, but without American Oak. Two years in oak have softened the palate, making this a very approachable Oakville red wine. As with previous vintages we get hints of cardamom and other savory characters.

Unlike previous vintages, this wine does not seem to need extra bottle aging to settle down. The 2018 seems surprisingly drinkable for such a young cabernet, making it extremely enjoyable at the moment and an appropriate accompaniment to your next steak.100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.7% ABV.

Silver Oak And Twomey Buy Ovid Napa Valley Winery

Silver Oak and Twomey Cellars have acquired Ovid Napa Valley in St. Helena. The wine companies announced the sale Thursday.

David R. Duncan, president and CEO of Silver Oak, said the company continues to ‘focus on acquiring compelling vineyards capable of producing unique and expressive American wines. With a shared passion for quality, sustainability, and site-driven estate bottlings.’

Ovid produces premium Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon. In the acquisition, Duncan stated Silver Oak and Twomey intended to allow Ovid to ‘retain its small-lot and limited-production focus on the unique terroir of Pritchard Hill.’

Promising to ‘let Ovid be Ovid’ the company announced Winemaker Austin Peterson, Vineyard Manager David Abreu, and Managing Partner Jack Bittner will continue on. Mark Nelson and his wife, Dana Johnson, are founding partners at Ovid.

Colorado entrepreneur Raymond Twomey Duncan began investing in California vineyards in the late 1960s, and Justin Meyer, a winemaker and former Christian Brother, began in a Napa Valley dairy barn in 1972, producing only 1,100 cases of their inaugural vintage. Justin retired and sold his share of Silver Oak to the Duncan family in 2001.

More affordable areas to grow cabernet are getting more competitive Adding to the pressure is a permitting process that makes converting land to new vineyards much tougher than it once was.

Best French: 2016 Chteau Marquis D’alesme Margaux

This bottle is the perfect example of what happens when you combine historic vineyards with expert winemakers . With its jewel-purple color and rousing aromas, this wine is a fully immersive experience from the trenches of Bordeauxs storied soil.

This wine is exceptionally fragrant and emboldened by dark fruits: plum, black currant, crème de cassis and blueberries. Bolstered on the back end by notes of sandalwood and violet, it’s medium-bodied with plump tannins and a dazzling texture, as well as a finish that lingers like a Hawaiian sunset.

Best Value: 2018 Avalon Cabernet Sauvignon

Produced from grapes grown in Californias warmer Lodi region, Avalons cabernet is one of those wines that sneaks up on you and grabs you by the tongue. Sustainably produced and flavor-conscious, this bottle has a taste that feels more expensive than it actually is.

Red-berry fruit, sweet oak spices, and vanilla find silky up-front fruit with powerful grippy tannins and a rich oak-led finish.

Not to knock Champagne, but if you have an occasion worth celebrating, try skipping the bubbly and diving into this exquisite bottle of cabernet. The Lokoya Mount Veeder is an indulgence, and you’ll know why as soon as the first drops fall on your tongue. It combines the best of Napa Valleys mountain climate, rich soils, and expert winemaking from Lokoyas artisan of the grape, Christopher Carpenter.

This is an example of peak cabernet. It is intensely aromatic with blueberry, violet, and blackberry notes bolstered by truffle and wild herbs. It’s also full-bodied with tannins that grip and refuse to let go. Enjoy with reckless abandon.

Meyer Family 2015 Bonny’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

$ 139.99

Among the tapestry of historic vineyards in Napa Valley, there are a few standout names, but even fewer sites, if any, involve the rare combination of legendary wine, romance, and a touch of mystery. Bonnys Vineyard is such a place. This four-acre vineyard in the Oakville District is both a special piece of land and a unique part of Napa history. It was planted in 1974 by Justin Meyer, the winemaker and co-founder of Silver Oak Cellars, as a gift to his wife, Bonny. Ideally situated in a gravelly spot adjacent to Conn Creek on the valley floor, Bonnys Vineyard was responsible for a memorable string of Silver Oak vintages over the course of two decades. Justin Meyer stopped producing the Bonny’s Vineyard designate after the 1991 vintage. After replanting in 1999, the family has again decided to make a single vineyard bottling. True to the orignal, this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% American oak barrels for almost 3 full years. The nose exhibits dark fruit aromas of cherry and plum mingling with cedar and cardamom and a hint of eucalyptus. The palate is the heart of this wine, with concentrated fruit on the entry and luscious, silky tannins filling the mouth with an almost endless finish.

Silver Oak Napa Valley

The Oak Bottle Review, with Tequila

Silver Oak Cellars produces Cabernet Sauvignon from two appellations. Their Napa Valley derives its fruit from both owned and contracted vineyards, and is produced entirely at their Oakville winery. Beginning in 1994, small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have been included in their Napa blend to add complexity and softness.

Silver Oak also produces stellar Cabernet from their Alexander Valley vineyards. A critical reason for the success of this wine, and every wine they make, has always been that they create the final blend before aging it in American oak barrels and then bottles. Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the wines flavors, aromas, and textures have an opportunity to meld with one another and the woods delicate qualities to create the kind of graceful cohesion found only in the world’s most elegant wines.

Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Review

I did this review with my good friend, Big Al, whos made regular appearances here in helping out with reviews.

Together, we tasted the 2012 vintage of this wine.

Notable about the 2012 vintage, weather was cooperative and led to an exceptional growing season and a gift from Mother Nature according to Silver Oaks tasting notes for this wine.

One thing I wasnt aware of was that Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is not 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Its actually a blend of the following, for the vintage we tasted :

  • 80% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 7% Cabernet Franc
  • 3% Petit Verdot

And finally, Silver Oak says this vintage can cellar all the way to 2037, if cellared properly.
