Critic Esther Mobley Recommends Bedrock Wine Cos Value

The wines of Bedrock Wine Co. are not exorbitantly priced to begin with. The Sonoma winerys entry-level bottling, Old Vine Zinfandel, usually sells just shy of $25.

But its Shebang label, which sells for $10 to $15 depending on the store, represents a truly jaw-dropping value for a well-made California wine.

The wine is simple and straightforward, but also juicy and fresh it smells like blueberries and cinnamon, with a zesty set of flavors that recall a summer cookout: cedar, grilled herbs, meat thats been doused in black pepper. The current release is a kind of kitchen-sink blend of grapes including Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvedre and Syrah.

It easily fulfills the goal that its winemaker, Morgan Twain-Peterson, had when he set out to make it. Its just meant to be unvarnished, easy, Cote du Rhone-y red wine, he says, referring to the inexpensive wine category from southern France.

Shebang is an example of whats often called a second label: a bottling where a winery can funnel portions of wine that didnt quite make the cut for its main label. The practice is common in Bordeaux. For the producers, its a way to ensure that only the top-quality liquid is going into their priciest bottling, and a way of doing something with the leftover wine other than selling it on the bulk market.

Nv The Whole Shebang Cuvee Xiii Red By Bedrock Wine Co

The Whole Shebang is a wine made by the small crew at Bedrock Wine Co. intended to offer authentic Californian deliciousness at a reasonable tariff. Composed of Zinfandel, Carignan, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mataro, and other Mediterranean varieties, the wine is our version of the humble, yet soul-satisfying, Cotes du Rhone.Unlike most California wines at its price point, Shebang is entirely made in our cellars with the majority of lots fermented with indigenous yeasts, native malolactic strains, and raised in a combination of neutral oak barrels and tank . The fruit comes from vineyards we are rehabilitating along with younger vine parcels and barrels of our Bedrock Wine Co. wines that do not fit into our higher-end wines. By being multi-vintage, it allows us, as a small winery, to create some consistency across cuvees and ensure we can deliver a wine we hope overdelivers for its price. | Bedrock Wine Co.

What Is A Cocktail Room

Here in Houston, a lot of older homes traditionally have a formal sitting room, says Hunt. “A lot of clients don’t know what to do with this space, so we’ve seen a trend of styling such an area like a formal sitting room but calling it a cocktail room.

Rather than trying to manipulate those tight, walled-in spaces near the entryway into something theyre just not meant to be, historic homeowners are embracing their formal sitting rooms and giving them new life. A sitting room may be outdated, but a cocktail room? Now thats both classy and edgy.

Calling it a cocktail room or lounge room really makes it a cooler space to actually spend time in, versus the formal sitting room which became an outdated idea that people thought theyd never use, says McPartland. Now, were transforming that space into something that is really adult-friendly and adding more character to renew that idea of a formal sitting room.

But whats the real difference between a formal sitting room and a cocktail room? According to Charleston, South Carolina-based designer and historic home preservationist, Olivia Brock, nothing, really. Rather the cocktail room movement is just one that fashionably catapults those old sitting rooms into the 21st century.

What Makes A Cocktail Room

The Whole Shebang XIII red blend by Bedrock Wine Co.

As a cocktail room is more of a state of mind than anything concrete, designing one contains very few hard boundaries. Still, designers have some specific stops they pull when facing this new trend.

First, a cocktail room should be closed in.

I think that people dove really hard into the open concept idea, and I think people are realizing that , especially from a family perspective, says McPartland. You can have a little separation in a nicer, more formal space where, when you have company over, adults can gather separately.

Second, the cocktail room is not a media room. This means theres no televisions allowed, but if you insist, a Frame TV may ease the eyesore.

When I’m working with clients, I really push very, very hard for fewer televisions and definitely not televisions in the formal spaces, Brock says. People tend to like having a spot where you can sit and enjoy drinks, appetizers, or tea with guests that isn’t revolving around the TV.

Lastly, comfy seating is a mustpreferably lots of it. Couches, chairs, the whole shebang.

Work in some really comfortable and modern upholstery, advises McPartland. We really love comfy swivel chairs and a fabric Ottoman that you can kick your feet up on to make it a space that you’re actually going to use, as opposed to a formal sitting room that you don’t feel like you can actually lounge in.

How To Use A Cocktail Room

Contrary to its name, a cocktail room doesnt have to be boozy. It certainly can be, especially if you add a chic bar or bar cart with everything you need to whip up an elegant beverage, but it’s hardly a requirement. Even if the room is zero-proof though, a 21+ age limit, or perhaps 18+, designates the space as an adult one.

While the kids may have passively taken over the rest of the house, the cocktail room is firmly for the grown-ups. A cocktail room is anything but a playroom. It can be used for relaxation, entertaining, or yes, a stiff drink.

The Whole Shebang Cuvee Xiv

This red blend is a perpetually excellent value from Bedrock Wine Company, which makes a wide variety of terrific, unmanipulated wines from old California vineyards. The array of groups includes zinfandel, carignan, syrah and petite sirah, and vintages are mixed as well, a welcome tactic. The result is an easygoing, lively wine that is delicious and versatile. Too often, inexpensive California reds are inflated with oak flavorings and other enhancements intended to imitate the characteristics of more expensive wines. Not this one, and it makes you think about how good these humble wines could be if other producers would permit them the dignity of authenticity. Eric Asimov NY Times

Have a Bite of the Garbage Plate

Orange wine is a small but growing category in Ontario. VQA certifications from the 2016 vintage went from one handful to three the next vintage and at Archive wine bar theyre outselling whites in winter. People have asked me if orange wine is a fad. Its legit. Its not going away, says Corea, Imagine how foolish it sounds dismissing a whole style of wine?.

Get To Know This Product

If youre like me, you may fondly remember drinking Zinfandel back in the 1990s, just when it was beginning to reemerge as a wine of significant notes. Those notes: it was fruit-forward deliciousness, and it was darn cheap, something that any failing graduate student could pour at dinner parties to stimulate friendship and conversation. It was the time of the Three Big Rs of Zinfandels revival Ravenswood, Ridge, and Renwood. Well focus on Ravenswood today.

Ravenswood was like a big high school science experiment that got out of hand and ended up changing the world. Founded by Joel Peterson way back when. He started to crush just a little bit of inexpensive mixed black fruit the only thing he could affordand the California vintners term for the Zinfandel family of grape varieties. And then he sold the resulting wine. It was fruity, easygoing, a little spicy, and easy to roll right on into the second bottle. Back then , this fruit was really inexpensive, to the point that nobody really wanted it. When Joel had success selling it, he got noticed by growers who wanted to sell him their worthless fruit, too! Talk about turning nothing into something.

The process snowballed. Joel made more of his Ravenswood Blend, now called Vintners Blend, and more growers brought him fruit. From a humble crush of maybe 50 cases to start, it grew to his son Morgans winery today, producing some 250,000 cases.

The result was this wine The Whole Shebang! As Morgon notes:

This continues a mixed vintage and varietal style. The nose shows a light char, tarragon, red fruits, and a light earth tone. The palate is quite pretty and bright with some soft fruits towards raspberry, strawberry and blackberry and a light hit of earth and some savory herb elements. D& M Tasting Notes

How Ontario Became A World Leader In Skin

Back in 2014, Ann Sperling made her first orange wine, but there was one problem with itOntarios wine regulatory body the Vintners Quality Alliance wouldnt certify it. That motivated her to seek a rule change and, on Canada Day in 2017, Ontario became the worlds second region to grant orange wine its own category, making it a global leader in one of the most exciting wine trends.

But are consumers ready to embrace a new colour and category of wine?

While regulating orange wines is new, the style is ancient. Friuli, Italy, has been making it for centuries and in Georgia, the birthplace of wine, its history stretches back to the first fermented grapes.

Whether you call them amber, orange or the VQAs technical skin-fermented white wines, they happen when winemakers make white wines like reds, crushing and fermenting the grapes on their skins. Having some characteristics of both white and red wine, without truly being either, orange wines are hard to definitively define.

Since implementation, says VQA Ontario executive director Laurie Macdonald, they have only received positive feedback. She views the process as a poster child and proof that VQA is set up to evolve. It blazes a trail for the industry showing we can make these changes, Macdonald says. Its a living document and we just have to keep it up to date. New Zealand and Australia asked about the rules.
