Where In California Is The Wine Country

Tasting 2015 Russian River Chardonnay at Sonoma-Cutrer

The Californian wine country is in the North San Francisco Bay area, with over 800 wineries located all along this scenic route. The Bay area encompasses some of the world’s most famous wine regions, including Napa Valley and Sonoma.

The success of these famous regions within the Bay area is largely to do with the sound soil composition and ideal climatic conditions. Each region is fortunate to have a wide range of temperatures and soil types, allowing the brilliant variety of grapes to thrive here.

Sonoma Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay

Product Code:

At first youthful, fresh, crisp, clean and lean then classic ripe Chardonnay aromas of honey, pear nectar and citrus blossom, softly framed by toasty, caramelized oak tones. The entry is smooth, with concentrated tastes of pear, apple and clove. The middle is a smoothly textured cascade of fruit flavors and the finish recalls fleshy, segmented pink grapefruit. A simple dish of mushrooms sautéed in butter and finished on high heat with a splash of Russian River Ranches, salt and a sprinkle of minced parsley is a superb pairing with the youthfulness of the 2002 Russian River Ranches. To really indulge, add a few drops of truffle oil just before serving. The earthy aromas and flavors of this dish bring out the luscious fruit in the wine. Russian River Ranches also pairs well with lightly smoked meats or poultry, and is a great choice for an elegant picnic wine.

What Is The Famous Wine Region Featured In The Movie Sideways

Sonoma

Thats Santa Barbara.

The greatest attribute of Sideways is that it promoted Pinot Noir, which became very popular because of the movie.

The region of Santa Barbara offers a great variety of unique tasting options with over 120 different wineries to choose from. This region is off-the-beaten-track, but should not be underestimated. Sideways drew much-needed attention to this region and all that it has to offer.

Laurie Daniel On Wine

Brice Cutrer Jones started planting vineyards in the Russian River Valley in the early 1970s and began making wine under the Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards label in 1981. His timing was good: The popularity of chardonnay was soaring.

Sonoma-Cutrer became practically synonymous with California chardonnay, and its Russian River Ranches bottling became one of the most popular chardonnays sold in restaurants.

Jones sold the business in 1999 to drinks company Brown-Forman. Meanwhile, the winery had been quietly experimenting with pinot noir, too, and added it to the mix in 2002. Now pinot noir has its own production facility.

Sonoma-Cutrers chardonnays have been remarkably consistent over the years, even with the change in ownership. That probably helped the winery weather the Anything But Chardonnay trend that got so much attention a few years back. One reason for the consistency almost certainly is the small number of winemakers responsible for Sonoma-Cutrer over the past 40 years.

Mick Schroeter, who joined the company in 2010 after longtime stints at Penfolds in Australia and Geyser Peak in Sonoma County, is only the third director of winemaking at Sonoma-Cutrer. He works with chardonnay winemaker Cara Morrison, who has been at the winery since 2005.

The 40th anniversary wine was released in the spring. During a recent Zoom tasting to introduce the wine, we tasted that bottle along with three others. Schroeter and Morrison led the tasting.

Which Wine Regions Are In California

From North to South, the main regions are Mendocino, Lake, Napa Valley, Sonoma, Livermore Valley, Lodi, Sierra Foothills, Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara.

California is a vast region that consists of several smaller wine-producing areas. Although Napa Valley and Sonoma are what California is most known for, the states other regions produce equally outstanding wines.

Napa Valley and Paso Robles are renowned for the bold reds of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, as well as the scenic wine route which offers unique experiences to wine lovers. On the contrary, Santa Barbara and The Russian River Valley, with conditions more suited to delicate grapes, produce outstanding expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Each of these regions offers a unique take on the wines of California allowing for a greater expression and experience of what the Golden State can truly offer.
