I am a sucker for a wine-recipe pairing, so when I figured out that Winc would recommend a recipe to go with each of its wines, I was thrilled. Winc partnered with Food52, one of my favorite places for online recipes, and matched each of its wines with a selection from the site.
For my first shipment, I opted to make the fudgy chocolate cake that went with the Bluffer Valdiguié, the only red wine in my box. Im an avid baker and chocolate enthusiast, so my standards are high when it comes to dessert recipes. But in true Food52 fashion, this recipe deliveredand the wine pairing was spot on. The dark chocolate perfectly complemented the rich red wine, and its a pairing I definitely plan on repeating in the future.

And that brings us to one of the big problems with wine drinking. And that is, that it can be very overwhelming, especially if youre a new wine consumer. There are many choices in terms of types of wine, red vs. white, wine regions and more.
The good news is that trying a wine club can be a great entry point into growing your wine expertise. But, choosing a wine club can be overwhelming in itself.

Why We Dont Recommend Subscribing To Winc
Good customer service was one of the key criteria we kept in mind while researching clubs for our guide to the best wine subscriptions. If you have questions about your wine or issues with your order, or if you need to pause or cancel shipments, a responsive customer service team can make or break your experience.
A branch president of the Better Business Bureau told us that part of the reason Winc has an F rating is because it hasnt responded to multiple complaints the bureau has sent.
For basic questions about using Wincs service, I resorted to texting a representative. The process was excruciatingly slowin some cases it took over 40 minutes for them to answer a single question, and our chat went on for hours. Frankly, it seemed as if they wanted to get rid of me. When I emailed Winc our questions, I received only generic automated responses. I even tried reaching out to current and former employees of Winc to see if they could help answer my questions. I never heard from anyone until I emailed the companys customer support team telling them Id be writing this article. Eventually I spoke with Ashley Carone, a public relations representative for Winc. She told me she was surprised to hear that Id had such a poor customer service experience and said it wasnt indicative of a typical users experience. But this wasnt an isolated incidentI had used Wincs text feature and tried emailing multiple times over the course of my research.
Are Wine Clubs Hard To Cancel
Generally speaking, no. We haven’t yet subscribed to every wine club, but the bulk of the ones we have tried make it fairly easy to cancel your subscription at no cost. Just be careful to read the details and fine print before you sign up. Some services will have options to commit to three or six months in advance and in those cases, it may be harder to cancel until your commitment is through.

Winc is a winery based in California, and their wine club membership is all part of their overall customer experience. The team has put together a varied range of wines from California and across the globe this range includes classic choices and wines that are more obscure and sourced from boutique and fringe operations.
We loved our experience with Winc wine club and felt that their unique range of wines was not only enjoyable, but we also appreciated their label design and presentation. At all times, Winc seems to embrace the fact that drinking wine should be something that you enjoy in a light-hearted way.
We enjoyed our Winc wine selection, most notably 2017 Loves Me Not Rosé. This was a lovely wine, perfect for a lazy afternoon, and it contained a lovely sweet fruitiness. Winc’s customers appear to be overall satisfied with the wine club service, though there are a few exceptions. But first, the positive buzz. People love the wine, which is, of course, the most crucial component of a wine club. And we have the algorithm to thank for that, as it continues to learn our preferences with each bottle. Here’s what some customers had to say:
Liz S. on Yelp said, “I love that you can choose which wines to get, switch out something you think you may not like, or be surprised. It’s introduced me to new wines that I thought I’d never like and changed my ‘taste.'”
wrote, “We are able to get bottles of wine for what we would pay regularly from the store, and we don’t have to spend lots of time trying to decide which wine to get!”
Still, some members haven’t had the best experience, especially regarding payment. Many people didn’t realize that Winc automatically charges them even when they don’t order wine, leading to some understandable frustration.
One anonymous customer wrote a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, stating, “Recently I discovered that I was twice again charged by Winc for $59.95… I did not authorize either of these payments, nor did I receive any product or service in return for these payments. I would like to have my money returned or the goods delivered.” A Winc representative promptly responded by explaining the company’s credit system, but still initiated a refund for the two charges.

Here are 3 things not to love about Winc:
1. A bit California-focused

Winc offers wines from all over the world, but there definitely seems to be an overwhelming preference for California wines.
There’s nothing necessarily wrong with that. California wine is some of the best in the world, after all! But if you’re really looking to educate your mind and palette on what the world of wine has to offer, there are some services that focus more on wine outside the Napa Valley.
2. Doesn’t always have enough of their best bottles

There have been some reports that Winc sometimes runs out of its most popular wines. This can be a real drag when you get a bottle you love, go back to order more, and discover they’re out of it.
Again, this is a relatively minor qualm, but it can be annoying when you want to fill a cellar with a bottle of wine and you discover you have to go without.
3. May not satisfy the more experienced and affluent wine lover

A quick glance at the Winc website will prove immediately that they have a lot of wine to offer. However, some feel that the wine isn’t always the most sophisticated. Since Winc is designed to offer affordable as well as delicious wine, this makes sense.

Winc Review And Unboxing
I was kindly sent 2 complimentary box of wines based on my flavor profile, and let me tell you, it was pretty spot on.
Heres the wines that came in my box:
- 2015 Invoke Syrah
- 2016 Easy Peasy Lemon Squuzy Sauvignon Blanc
- NV Eplevin Cider
- 2016 Vinyasa Muscat Canelli
Plus, each box also comes with a Winc Journal which describes all the wine and flavor notes available on their site as well as general wine information. Pretty cool if you ask me!
And heres what was in my second Winc box:

I generally prefer something on the sweeter side so most of these were pretty good options.
Overall, I was really impressed with Winc, from start to finish and Ill definitely be using their services in the near future.
How Do I Skip A Month On Winc
You have to use Winc’s Skip A Month feature if you don’t want your next shipment. Log in to your member portal on any device and open your account settings. Click on the “skip a month” dropdown or logo and follow through with it.
You must take action 48 hours before your next order for your request to be valid. Also, deleting all the wines in your cart won’t work. Winc would fill it up with suitable wines to be delivered on your next order date.
