Winc Customer Service: Helpful But Limited In Scope

Winc Wine # 1/ Bottle 4- Matchlock Cabernet Sauvignon #Winc

Winc has multiple modes of customer support, all of which are accommodating but limited. Help is available through either the live chat function or by calling 855-282-5829. Just make sure you do so during the hours of operation: Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT.

What happens when you get a wine you don’t like? Winc’s customer service will work to make things right, offering credit equivalent to the price of the wine. Winc will also take these flubs into account with your Palate Profile so you don’t get similar bottles in the future. If it were up to me, refunds would be an option, too, but I just write the reviews.

If you want to cancel your subscription, you must do so through a customer service representative via either the live chat function on the website or over the phone. But no matter which route you choose, it has to be during the working hours listed above. I always appreciate it when I can easily cancel a service by clicking a buttonno correspondence necessary. In my mind, if you can skip a month without reaching out to customer support, you should be able to do the same when canceling.

After My First Delivery

Update: I bought more wine from Winc!

After first publishing this review, I purchased more wine from Winc and thought Id share a few short personal reviews of five of the wines Ive received.

I made a point to purchase a few uncommon varietals to see what theyd be like.

The picture above shows the wines I bought and are the ones Im talking about below.

Here they are

Winc Wine Club Price: Quality Wines At Grocery Store Prices

Winc’s extremely reasonable pricing makes it a force to be reckoned with among wine club competitors. First of all, there’s no member fee, and signing up gives you discounted prices at the online store, starting at $13 per bottle. That price tag is on par with standard grocery stores, which is unheard of for wine clubs, plus Winc tailors its wines to your taste. You can fill your cart with as many bottles as you like, though orders of three bottles or fewer include a $9 shipping fee. Otherwise, shipping is free, making Winc an even sweeter deal.

Orders aren’t automatic, meaning you’ll have to review your cart each month and confirm the order yourself. The plus side is that you never get a wine you don’t want. But here’s where the caveat comes in: Winc still charges you $60 per month , which automatically transfers into credit.

The formula is simple: $1 equals one credit, and you’ll cash those in for bottles of wine. You can also save credits on purpose to buy wine in bulk on a later date. Either way, your credits will always carry over, so your money isn’t wasted as long as you use them. That said, you can still skip a month’s payment or pause your membership. Just make sure you do so at least 48 hours before your payment processing date, which depends on when you first signed up.

Best For Gifting: Save 15% On Gift Cards Worth $150 Or More

Buying a gift card valued at $150 or more will save you 15%, which means you have to get at least a three-month subscription. It might sound like a lot, but think of how much the recipient will appreciate getting a gift for three months straight. And after the year we’ve all had, who couldn’t use a nice drink at the end of the day for the next three months?

How I Tested The Service

Winc wine delivery

Taste testing wine isn’t much of a chore, though four bottles’ worth was a bit daunting for me to do alone. That’s why I enlisted some close friends to drink them with me, and they were more than happy to help. But while five of us knocked out three of the bottles in one sitting, I made sure to save the lone white wine for me to test on my own. I wanted to see if I would actually enjoy it without any outside influence, especially given that it’s not my go-to selection. I also wanted to pair it with an appropriate meal to see how that may enhance the experience.

Winc Flavor And Quality: Perfect For My Taste

I recruited an army of five friends to help me tackle my Winc wine selections. The tasting happened to be on my birthday, which added a layer of festivity to testing out the various bottles. We’re your typical lineup of 20-something girls, meaning we love a good wine night, but don’t know much about what we’re drinking. Our amateur status made asking my friends for quotes about the experience a comical exercise, but hey, there’s no better wine pairing than genuine laughter.

The five of us knocked out three of the four bottles before hitting the town . Anyway, here are our honest reviews of each wine:

2018 Pacificana Zinfandel: Upon tasting this Zinfandel, my friend Caitlin remarked, “This one tastes veryred.” A simple observation? Sure, but it also holds some truth: There wasn’t much flavor to this wine. I’d put it on par with your trusty boxed wine that you can whip out any weeknight and enjoy without much fuss or thought. Winc described it as “balanced,” and after tasting it, the verbiage signaled to me that nothing about it is meant to stand out. Still, the delicate texture made it go down easily. So for a quiet night in with Netflix or a good book, this wine will do just fine.

My Overall Opinion Of Winc Wines

Having gone through the order process, the unboxing and tasting each wine, Im comfortable recommending this wine club to my readers.

Especially if you prefer value-oriented wines.

I think what really sets Winc apart from other wine clubs is their modern approach to ordering wine online:

  • They make their own wine, which is really rare for a wine club.
  • Theyve figured out how to incorporate their customer first wine selection algorithm into their business model.
  • The wines are a great value that are tasty and reasonably priced.

If I were to write a short overall review for Winc, heres what it would be:

A fabulous customer first wine club Excellent value, tasty wines and a modern approach!

My August 2021 Wines: First Impressions

When you sign up to join Winc, you take a six-question palate profile quiz to help determine your taste in wine. Based on your answers, Winc makes bottle recommendations for you every month. You can go along with their recommendations, choose your own bottles from their regularly changing selection, or skip the month completely. You can also take the palate profile test as often as youd like.

The bottles are shipped in an upright cardboard box that has molded pieces to hold them in place. This helps prevent the bottles from bashing into one another during transport. The box is rather sturdy and has a convenient handle that makes it easy to carry.

I like to choose my own Winc wines every month, so unpacking my box is never any great surprise. Still, it’s always fun to get my hands on the actual bottles and check out the label art in person.

Winc Wine Club: Expanding Your Palate

Winc has plenty of wines to choose from in its online store, including red, white, rosé, sparkling, and even vegan options. Oh, and Winc makes all its own wine, too. The service uses data from customers to find out what they like and then partners with vineyards to make more of those blends. The result is a wine club that values its members above all else, and the great-tasting selections don’t hurt either.

How Much Sugar Is Actually In Wine

In order to determine how much sugar is in your wine, look to sweetness. People often mistake fruitiness for sweetness, but these two tasting characteristics are very different. Even though you might smell fruity aromas, the wine would still be dry based on its residual sugar content.

Lets get one thing established without sugar, there is no wine. Seriously. Grapes contain naturally occurring sugars which are consumed by yeast and converted to alcohol during the fermentation process. Fermentation is complete once the desired sugar level is reached which, for many wines, is when they get to fully dry at 0° Brix. But you may have heard the term residual sugar. This is any leftover sugar that remains post fermentation and is measured in grams per liter. So if you consider that most dry wines have very few grams of RS per the entire liter then it might be a shocker to see other beverages and foods reaching 25 grams or more per serving!

For sweeter dessert wines, winemakers stop the fermentation process earlier, leaving more residual sugar that the yeast hasnt yet converted to alcohol. This leaves a sweeter style wine with lower alcohol content.

On the flip side, dry wines ferment much longer, leaving little residual sugar and higher alcohol content.

A dry wine typically has less than 10 grams of residual sugar per liter often 3 grams or under. A sweet or dessert wine has more than 30 grams per liter. Most wines in between would be characterized as off-dry.

How Long Does Winc Take To Deliver

Thankfully, Winc doesnt take very long to deliver. Ive received four shipments from Winc this summer, all of which have shipped within 2-5 days of ordering. The shipment emails come with tracking, which is helpful, since you have to be home to present your ID in order to receive your shipment. The packages themselves arrive from FedEx, and all of mine came within another 2-4 days. Its also important to note that there are six states that dont allow alcohol delivery: Utah, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Rhode Island, and Deleware.

Winc takes about 4-10 days for final delivery, in my experience.

    Understanding Sugar Levels In Wine

Low-carb wines now a popular option at grocery stores

Now that you know the bad news about consuming too much sugar, we have some good news: You don’t have to take wine off the table. While there is technically no such thing as sugar-free wine since all alcohol is derived from sugar, there are wines that exist without any added sugars. Case in point: Usual Wines, which have zero added sugars, additives, chemicals, or sulfites.

There are several factors that affect the sugar content in wine, including when the grapes are harvested and how long they’re allowed to ferment. For example, varietals like Riesling, Chenin Blanc, and Sémillon are often left on the vine longer , which results in a riper, sweeter, and raisinated wine grape with more concentrated sugar levels.

The fermentation process is another factor that directly affects the sugar content in wine. As you may have learned in our guide to winemaking, fermentation is the most critical part of wine production.

During this process, naturally occurring sugars are converted into carbon dioxide and ethyl alcohol. If fermentation is halted before all the sugars are converted into alcohol, the result is a sweeter wine with more residual sugar. If the fermentation process is allowed to run its course, there will be less sugar, resulting in a drier wine.

Good To Know: Usual Wines are made the Old-World way, in small batches from sustainably farmed grapes with minimal intervention and absolutely no added sugars or other additives.

    Who Should Join Winc

Winc would like to believe that everyone should join. Theyre trying hard to make a wine club thats a good fit for all wine lovers. The reality is that Winc isnt for everyone. Here is my take on who should and shouldnt join Winc.

    Winc is great for

Winc is not so great for

    • Premium Wine Drinkers. The prices alone should be used as a tool to self-select out of Winc. If you drink wine that normally costs $20-30 a bottle, Winc probably isnt the best choice for you. If you frequently drink wine over $30 a bottle, Winc definitely is not a wine club for you. Please see these wine clubs instead.
    • Wine lovers who only love one or two kinds of wine. While you can certainly have a Winc membership built around one or two wines, I wouldnt recommend it. The most important reason not to do this is that inventory sells through and you might not be able to get your favorites every month. That said, if youre an Apple Cider fiend or a wine lover with a sweet tooth, Winc is a good option for an affordable selection delivered to your door .
