Sleeping And Eating In Virginia’s Vineyards

Barboursville Vineyards offers several unique options for staying on a property dating back to 1804.

Barboursville Vineyards

Its been fifty years since a Richmond ad agency came up with one of the most enduring and endearing of state mottoesVirginia Is For Loversa sentiment my wife and I learned was very true for anyone open to the varied beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah Valley and the Chesapeake Bay.

Back in the Bicentennial Year of 1976, we drove throughout the state, using as our guide the popular Country Inns and Backroads by Norman T. Simpson, staying at enchanting, historic places like the Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, the Hollymead Inn in Charlottesville and the Wayside Inn in Middletown, and eating at picturesque restaurants like the Half Way House in North Chesterfieldall of them still going strong.

So I had a strong sense of romantic nostalgia this winter when I visited wineries in Virginia to find that two of the best are also inns with restaurants that far exceed anything in the state back in the 1970s.

The Octagon Suite at the 1804 Inn is decorated with period detail and modern amenities.
