Winding through eleven sub-appellations, Pasos various wine trails unfold amid groves of olive and walnut trees, rolling hills and large, moss-covered boulders, made more mysterious when partially obscured by the occasional mist that drifts in from the nearby Pacific.

Bandits Weapons And A Mexican Land Grant
Theres a story behind the identify of the El Pistolero winelabel, and as that identify suggests, there was a pistol concerned. You see, Michaelis a seventh-generation Californian. Over 100 and fifty years in the past, Michaelshousehold held a 32,000-acre Mexican land grant within the San Luis Obispo space. Theagain label of this wine recounts the story. However from what I recall, the storyincluded a bandito, derringers, land bother, and revenge.
At present the El Pistolero model is thrilling wine at a terrificworth. El Pistolero presently includes two releases: a Cabernet Sauvignonmix from Paso Robles and a Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands.
Downtown Paso Robles Flat
Im Californian, so I am culturally required to abuse the word literally however, trust me when I say this is LITERALLY the best location you could ask for when it comes to being in town. And I literally mean literally.
When people talk about Downtown Paso Robles, they usually use Downtown City Park as a central reference, the park in the heart of the city. But my personal metric is the distance from Brown Butter Cookie Company, which is just off the square and filled with delicious cookies. Priorities.
Regardless of your priorities, this adorable studio is on the same block as both, plus it is located above my favorite restaurant in town: La Cosecha. La Cosecha features some of the best Latin American food weve had outside of Latin America, served up by a Honduran chef alongside incredible craft cocktails. We recommend the Honduran empanadas, the fresh ceviche, flavorful grilled octopus, and the Clover Club South cocktail, which reminded us of a raspberry Pisco Sour.
But dont feel like you have to miss out on all that vino being downtown instead of in the vineyards! Downtown Paso has dozens of affordable and approachable tasting rooms, so you can do a tasting tour on foot before stumbling home safely to your accommodation. This is our favorite way to spend an afternoon in downtown Paso Robles!

Pros Of Visiting Paso Robles
Living in the Bay area, I am luckily very familiar with wine tasting in northern California. There were certain things that I actually preferred in Paso Robles over Napa Valley and Sonoma.
- Paso Robles was very dog-friendly. Almost all of the wineries in the area allow dogs on leash during wine tastings.
- Paso Robles feels more secluded and hidden than Napa Valley. Napa Valley has double the amount of wineries than Paso Robles and is a little more congested and touristy than Paso Robles.
- You can find cheaper accommodations, wine tastings, and dinners than Napa Valley and Sonoma.

Last Minute Hotel Options Paso Robles
Sometimes you just don’t get around to planning. When you find yourself on the road to Paso Robles with no confirmed hotel room, we recommend booking at one of these two. They are both very nice hotels. The only drawback is the location. The hotels are directly off the highway.
That said, these hotels are centrally located for wine tasting. They have nice rooms. The Bellasera is generally the nicer of the two, but if you are a Hilton member, the Hampton Inn has some nice perks.
While these aren’t the best Hotels in Paso Robles, they offer a pleasant place to stay in a pinch.

What Kind Of Wine Does Paso Robles Produce
We have been buying wine from Paso Robles way before we went wine tasting here. Trust me, now that you know about Paso Robles, you are going to notice their wines on the shelves of supermarkets and at many fine-dining restaurants everywhere.
Paso Robles, California, consists of 40,000 acres of vineyards, with more than 200 wineries. Most of the wineries in Paso Robles are family-owned and operated businesses. They have the ideal weather for winemaking. With their warm sunny days and cool nights, it creates the perfect climate to produce a variety of over 40 wine grapes. Some of the favorites of the Paso Robles region are:Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne
Personally, I can never get enough wine! After your trip to Paso Robles, check out the other wine region in Northern California, Napa Valley. Find my Guide to Napa Valley, which includes many insider tips and everything you need to know before planning your next wine tasting in Napa.
Where To Stay In Paso Robles
The lofty Piccolo is one of Paso’s newest hotels.
The newly-opened Lofts at the Market are part of the sustainable mixed-use development that includes a coffee shop, bakery, vegan creamery, ramen shop, cider house, and natural wine bar downstairs. You may get some apartment envy in their smartly designed suites, which include a wine fridge, gorgeous Spanish tile backsplashes, and plenty of sweet amenities for your pooch.
The Piccolo is another centrally located option with ultra-thoughtful touches that include a Moet Champagne vending machine and a stunner of a rooftop bar, as well included continental breakfast. Be sure to take note of the woodwork by San Luis Obispo-based carpenter Janine Stone, which plays nicely with the hotel’s exposed brick walls and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Another excellent option is The Stables Inn , the cooler little sister to the more upscale, old-world Cheval Hotel. It is owned and operated by the same team, and is similarly rooted in equestrian culture, but The Stables has a decidedly more millennial, Austin vibe than its English-riding sibling, complete with outdoor fire pits and Western tack room decor.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, The Trailer Pond offers an adorable vintage RV cluster amidst the organically farmed Alta Colina Vineyard. The stay includes complimentary tasting of their Rhône varietal blends, fresh morning coffee, and the playful, laid-back vibe that the region is known for.

Overflowing with world class wines, but still feels like small town California.
Theres certainly no shortage of excellent Californiawine regions within driving distance of San Francisco or Los Angeles. But Paso Robles is different in its sense of down home hospitality, where youre just as likely to belly up to the bar with the winemaker as you are to end a night with whiskey shots at the local cowboy saloon. Paso holds tight to the small town charm of a working agricultural community and all the camaraderie that comes along with it.
Thats not to say that youll be roughing it during your stay, though. There are plenty of architecturally impressive tasting rooms and well-appointed boutique hotels to be found. You just wont be burdened with as many high ticket pours, or the wine snobbery that comes along with them.
While California was hit particularly hard in the past year, there actually has never been a better time to try wine here most wineries require a reservation these days, and as a result, guests get a more curated experience. Rather than having to share a tasting room associate with a gaggle of boisterous bachelorettes, youll be one-on-one and feeling like a VIP, learning about whats become one of the countrys quickest growing wine regions.
