- INGREDIENTS DECLARED BY THE PRODUCERContains sulphites
Luscious and jammy reds are medium-bodied, full-bodied or very full-bodied wines that combine ripe berry notes and pronounced jammy flavours.
You can discern notes of cherry jam, wild berry jam or dark plum in these wines. Ripe tannins add the necessary structure for pairing the wines with food.
Tips for use
Wines with rich flavours and aromas are a good choice when serving meat dishes.
Try with BBQ-marinated pork ribs, beef and vegetable skewers or T bone steaks.
How to serve
Red wines are best served slightly below room temperature, at 1618°C. Chilling a bottle from room temperature to the perfect serving temperature takes about half an hour in a fridge.
Reviews For Frank Cornelissen Susucaru Rosato 2020
Kris Byers August 14, 2019
This is an odd one I love the story of this wine and the unbelievable media attention its garnered from an unlikely source: flushing Queens rapper, Action Bronson. This is his favourite wine and he talks about it on his TV shows on Vice and in his albums constantly. This wine is also the reason wanted to get into natural wine. I guess because of Bronson. I first tried it a few years ago, it was incredible, it opened my eyes and mouth to a new kind of wine. The funk was real, it was like drinking a crossbreed between an English cider and a provance rose but complex, fruity and kind of heady . BUT 2017 iteration was not great, I feel that 2017 was a bit overly funky, the funk this time, not translating on the palate as it had in previous years, additionally, the nose was a tad too much sweaty feet for my liking! Lets hope this vintage is a better version. OVERALL: 4 stars, because FC is a legend, natural is always going to change up year on year with the conditions, this wine is the wine that got me into natural wine and I havent tried this years vintage! Damn, I might just have to buy a bottle.

A sensational wine, with an equally sensational history! Everyone should try it at least once! Super light, high acidity and pretty damn quaffable.
To Enjoy It At Its Best
Perfect for young and medium bodied red wines which don’t require excessive oxygenation to open. The opening, slightly tighter than the body of the glass, favors the concentration of aromas towards the nose, enhancing the perception of aromas and limiting the dispersion
When to drink
When to drink
Wine good to drink now, but that can have a beautiful evolution after resting for a while in your cellar
You can easily cellar it for 4-5 years

The Terroir Of Sicily

Sicily proximity to Northern Africa and position right at the center of the Mediterranean reflect deeply on its climate. Endless sunshine, moderate rainfalls, and good aeration characterize pretty much the whole region with minor seasonal variations. Palm trees and other tropical plants and fruits are a fairly common sight in Sicily all year round.
Among the several benefits of this climate one stands out: in Sicily, grapes can grow without being imperiled by mildew, rot, or any other disease brought by too much humidity. Sicilian grapes are generally speaking naturally healthy, hence the substantial number of certified organic or biodynamic wineries.

Its back!! The iconic Susucaru Rosato 2020.
The 2020 Rosato produced by the famous Frank Cornelissen with the same thought process and winemaking techniques as all Frank’s other wines: skin contact for terroir identity.
Made from a blend of Malvasia, Moscadella, Insolia and Nerello Mascalese, this is a rosé which can also be regarded as a light red. With no added sulphites or yeasts, the wine is definitely geeky gear, and probably closest to a pale Jura red if youre looking for a comparison.
The 2020 Frank Cornelissen Susucaru Rosato is produced with the same philosophy and vinification techniques as all his other wines: skin contact for texture and territorial identity, malolactic fermentation fully finished for density, fluidity and stability. Susucaru Rosato is a refreshing summer wine from a blend of Malvasia, Moscadella, Insolia and Nerello Mascalese. Franks goal is to avoid all treatments whatsoever in the vineyard, orchard and surroundings, in which they succeeded even in difficult vintages such as 2004 and 2005.
Frank’s Susucaru Rosato is mega hard to get hold of, we had an allocation of just 24 bottles this year, grab yours while you can, once it’s gone, it’s gone!
Why Are Sicilian Wines Different
The wines have distinct traits due to the terroir.
The region of Sicily grows both white and red varieties, but there is a clear focus on the aromatic white wines of the region. The region was once known for producing simple, bulk wines that were easily exported. However, there has been a major shift in focus, as the wine-producers have taken advantage of the unique terroir the region has.
The terroir if this region is so distinct separating itself as one of the most unique regions in the world. The soil of this region consists mainly of volcanic soils. These soils result in wines that are not traditionally fruity. Instead, these wines, the whites especially, have distinct savoury, herbaceous and salty traits. This is found nowhere else in Italy. Although other regions in the world, namely Napa Valley and Willamette Valley, also have traces of volcanic soils, their wines are nowhere near as fragrant as those of Sicily.
Not only are these unique traits found in more well-known varieties grown in Sicily, like Chardonnay, but also in other Sicilian wine grapes, like Catarratto, Grillo, Insolia and Malvasia.
These white wines are backbone of the region, and is what is making the wines of Sicily loved by so many across the world. These aromatic grapes also make them ideal for producing luscious Sicilian dessert wines. Some of the most popular ones include Moscato di Pantelleria, and Malvasia.

The Producer: Frank Cornelissen
Frank Cornelissen is one of the most famous natural winemakers in the world, consistently making incredible wines in Sicily, near Mount Etna, from mostly Nerello Mascalese Sicilian Native varietal. Below he the man himself defines his estate and approach to farming.
Our farm and vineyards are located in Sicily, in the Northern valley of the active volcano Etna. The northern valley is considered today Etnas top area for single-vineyard red wines like the Côtes-de-Nuits in Burgundy or Piemontes Barolo area. The surface area of our estate is approximately 24 hectares, of which 13ha are old vines in the classic free standing alberello training system , 9ha of old vines transformed into modern rows with various width, approximately 2ha of olive growth and the remainder are fruit trees, vegetables and bush.
Although Etna has a tradition in high density plantation of vines, we search to reduce monoculture and have interplanted various local fruit varieties and keep bees to regain a complex ecosystem. The new vineyards are planted without grafts, using a selection of our original, ungrafted vines. The training system used is the alberello. Buckwheat is used for rebalancing soils low on organic material without recourse to industrial compost, especially important when preparing land for a new vineyard plantation.

The White Wines Of Sicily
In a similar way to Umbria, the Central Italian region known for the red tannic wine Sagrantino di Montefalco, Chardonnay has found its place also in Sicily. Chardonnay from Sicily can vary in quality depending on the producer.
On Primal Wine we sell one of the few 100% Chardonnay vinified with extended skin-contact in the style of an Orange Wine made by the excellent Marabino winery from organically farmed grapes.

The Red Wines Of Sicily
The most widely planted red grape varietal in Sicily is Nero d’Avola, which accounts for about 20% of the total regional wine production. Frappato is another prominent red varietal, used to make the only DOCG wine in Sicily, Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG.
Less common but typical of Sicily are Alicante, similar to Grenache, Nocera, and Perrone, often blended with Nero d’Avola. On the slopes of the active volcano Mount Etna, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are key red grape varietals in the popular Etna DOC appellation.

This is a blend of Malvasia, Moscadella, Insolia and Nerello Mascalese.
The grapes were destemmed. As with the other Cornelissen wines, this is made with skin contact for texture and for the expression of terroir. The wine was fermented naturally and aged in neutral tanks, and filtered lightly before bottling.
