Apart from Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido is also known for producing Super Tuscan wines, Guidalberto, and Le Difese. Sassicaia was harvested for the first time in 1968 and quickly became a great success. Nowadays, Tenute San Guido vineyard carries the title of Premier Cru Bordeaux.

We Are Always Usually One Of The First Ones To Pick In Bolgheri The Neighbours Start Getting Nervous When They See Our Trucks Running Around What Are They Doing Says Priscilla

Sassicaia 2017, the vintage that was released this time last year in the flesh, was a textbook example of how a great wine can still be made in a difficult vintage. Sassicaia 2018, on the other hand is how a masterpiece can be made.

Tenuta San Guidos Priscilla Incisa della Rochetta the granddaughter of the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who first conceived the wine and planted the international grapes in Tuscany in the 1940s launched Sassicaia 2018, Guidalberto 2019 and Le Difese 2019 yesterday online.

A classic vintage has produced a classic Sassicaia

2018 was a fresh vintage with lots of rainfall and many days in August where the temperature dropped below average. The result was that the fruit had more hang-time with harvest taking place 7-10 days later than normal. In the Sassicaia 2018 this slow phenolic ripeness has resulted in greater complexity and brighter acidity than were evident in the 2017 and are hallmarks of a spectacular wine.

Explaining the weather in 2018 Priscilla said It was totally different to 2019 fresh and cool but it was not easy, it was challenging especially in the Spring and early summer to keep vegetation in control and protect against moles. But it is the kind of vintage we like, it represents the classic Sassicaia style which is less about concentration and sugar and alcohol but more about finesse, elegance. With this wine we celebrate 50 years and no.8 is always a lucky vintage so we are more than satisfied.

What Makes Sassicaia So Collectible

Sassicaia played an integral role in the evolution of Italian wine. It was the very first Super Tuscan ever released. In the late 1940s, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta brought Bordeaux grapes to Tuscany to make wine for his personal use. He thought that the fast-draining, rocky soil on his Bolgheri estate would be perfect for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, this is where Sassicaia got its namethe word roughly translates to stony field. The Marcheses estate had similar terroir to that of the Médoc and the non-indigenous grapes absolutely thrived under these conditions. The wine produced by the estate was as elegant and balanced as fine Bordeaux and had soft tannins that made it approachable and charming in its youth.

The 2015 Sassicaia vintage was the second most-traded fine wine on the secondary market in 2018.

Not only do Sassicaia wines have value and historical significance, but they are also consistently high in quality from year to year. The average aggregated critic score for all Sassicaia vintages in history is 94 points and many of the best vintages receive perfect scores. With so many top-quality wines to choose from, where should you start? Weve split our Sassicaia vintage guide into two categoriesyoung and old winesto help you make your decision.

Fakers, fake wines, fake Sassicaia

Sassicaia is a great investment for beginners and experienced wine collectors alike. Because these wines drink well in their youth, you dont necessarily have to wait decades for them to mature. They rarely go through an awkward phase or taste too tannic. Still, if you love the taste of mature wine and want to enjoy these wines at their best, keep younger wines in storage for at least a decade or two. Some of the best older vintages, like the 1985, may still gain complexity in coming years, so it may be worth keeping them in storage for a bit longer as well.

Tenuta San Guido is an estate in Bolgheri by the Tyrrhenian coast. It was established by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta who wanted to create ideal wines to which he drank a lot in his youth. And during this time, the ideal wine for him were Bordeaux wines. He experimented a lot and this gave birth to one of the most popular wines in Italy, Sassicaia.

It all started with Mario Incisa della Rochetta who was born and raised in Piedmont before moving to Rome. After fighting for world war 1, he moved to Pisa and brought with him the horse he rode during the war. He got involved with the local thoroughbred community and met his future wife, Clarice della Gherardesca who he married in 1930. Afterwards, they moved to Rome to breed race horses.

After the second world war, they decided to leave Rome and settle in Clarices hometown of Bolgheri on a property she inherited. The name of this property is Tenuta San Guido. Mario Incisa della Rochetta was a agronomist, and he set about restoring the property as it had been neglected for a long time. He started planting fruits, vegetables and other products. Eventually, he turned his attention to wine. He wanted to make a thoroughbred wine just as he raised and trained one of, if not the most famous thoroughbred in history, Ribot.

MENTIONED IN THIS POST:

In 2016, wine critic Jane Anson had the opportunity to try 44 different Sassicaia vintages in a single day. By the end of the tasting, she was approaching sensory overload, but she never got tired of the wine. Anson said the Sassicaia vintages displayed an excellent balance that kept them from being overpowering. She said, almost impossible to imagine another European Cabernet-based wine, tasted through this many vintages, managing to pull off this gentle physicality. In particular, Anson enjoyed the 2014, 2010, 2006, 2001, 1996, and 1985 vintages, as they were especially refined, complex, and aromatic.

Its these qualities that attract collectors to Tenuta San Guidos iconic Sassicaia label year after year, and which make them valuable on the secondary market. Older Sassicaia Vintages: A Guide To Mature Wines

While many collectors like to invest in young wines that they can lay down, others prefer to buy older vintages that have already reached maturity or are closer to it. Sassicaia is a label that ages particularly well over the decades, so even wine made in the late 1960s can still be worth drinking today. If youre interested in investing in older bottles, heres a detailed Sassicaia vintage guide based on scores from Jancis Robinson and her guest contributors:

Like many great wines, as Sassicaia ages, it becomes more powerful, layered, and complex. When Jancis Robinson had the opportunity to drink a dozen vintages in 2010, she said it was one of the most inspiring and consistent tastings I can remember. Some of the wines were quite old, yet they still tasted fresh and immensely complex. If you dont have decades to wait for a top-quality young wine to mature, then consider investing in some of these iconic older vintages.
