Follador Brut Nature Millesimato Pas Dos

Weight Watchers Cense Wine – Did Someone Say Rose?

Calories per 125ml glass: 75

ABV: 11.5%

In 2018 Follador launched a new, vegan friendly, low-calorie sparkler with just 75 calories per 125ml glass. The Brut Nature Millesimato Pas Dosé has been made using the Krios system, which uses inert cryogenic gas to reduce the temperature of grapes during crushing, removing the air and eliminating the unfavourable effects of oxygen on a wine in the pressing phase.

This process has also allowed Follador to reduce the level of sulphites used in its wines by 30%. Follador claims to be the first producer in Valdobbiadene to experiment with the Krios system, and has now trademarked the entire process under the name the Gianfranco Follador Method.

From the 2017 vintage all of Folladors Proseccos, produced across four DOCGs in Valdobbiadene in the Torri di Credazzo Cuvée, Cartizze, Brut and Extra-Dry categories, will undergo the Krios system.

This new sparkler is described as having an important, harmonious structure with aromas of green apple, pear, lime, citrus and fresh flowers.

An Wine Mallorca Wine

The Biniagual Winery is a family run business dedicated to wine production on land used traditionally for the same purpose. Located in the heart of the wine producing region of Binissalem, the small village of Biniagual was known for its wine production for many years until the phylloxera plague destroyed most of the vines in Mallorca at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Yellow Tail Pure Bright

Calories per 125ml glass: 79

ABV: 8.5%

One of the biggest wine brands in the world, Australias Yellow Tail last year announced the launch of a new lower ABV wine range in the UK. In line with Pernod Ricards strategy, Casella Family Brands, which owns Yellow Tail, cited changing attitudes toward alcohol to have led them to launching a lighter wine range in the UK.

At the time of its launch, head of strategy, Michael Sergeant, said health and social drivers were impacting the wine category in many ways, with drinking more moderately an aspiration for more people than ever, but that concerns over the taste of lighter wines was holding the category back. Pure Bright seeks to address this, with the aim of offering the same varietal characteristics of a Pinot Grigio, citing notes of red apple, pear and passionfruit, but at a lower abv.

At 8.5% Pure Bright Pinot Grigio carries 79 calories per glass, with the range also including a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and rosé. The wines are available in Tesco at £7 each.

Thomson & Scott Organic Prosecco

Calories per 125ml glass: 84ABV: 11%

An early adopter of the skinny fizz trend, the Skinny range of sparkling fizz was founded by former BBC broadcaster Amanda Thomson in 2014 and included a Prosecco, Champagne, Cava and Franciacorta, capitalising on a move towards healthier drinking and calorie-counting consumers, alongside the Prosecco boom.

As previously reported by db, the Skinny brand was first launched with a zero dosage fizz from Alexandre Penet a Champagne house renowned for its low-dosage cuvées which was later followed by a similarly bone-dry rosé.

Now, the range has been rebranded and streamlined to include an organic Prosecco under the Thomson & Scott label, formally Skinny Prosecco and still low in calories, alongside Noughty, an alcohol-free sparkling wine.

Thomson and Scott Organic DOC Prosecco contains 84 calories per 125ml glass and 7g of sugar per litre, compared with the more common 12 to 15g range. It is produced from Glera grapes grown on the south facing slopes of the Dolomite foothills, close to Soligo, North East Italy.

Cense Wines

Krista’s thoughts: So this wine has a very sweet taste, kind of like a moscato if you are into that . It also was so sweet it seemed to make my mouth water after each drink. It wasn’t bad, though! I give it 7.5/10 stars.

Asia’s thoughts: I thought it was just okay, honestly. At first it tasted like a pretty solid low-priced white wine, but the more we sipped, the more I noticed a bit of an aftertaste that I didn’t love. I rate this 6/10 stars.

The Doctors Sauvignon Blanc

Calories per 125ml: 67

ABV: 9.5%

Forrest Winery was a frontrunner of the low-alcohol wine movement in New Zealand, first launching The Doctors range in 2006.

John and Brigid Forrest, who have PhDs in Neurophysiology and Medicine respectively, first conceived the range with a Riesling. A Sauvignon Blanc followed in 2009 and then in 2017 a Pinot Noir and a rosé, made from Pinot Noir and the aromatic Arneis, was added. All wines in the range are 9.5% abv and are made with no chemistry tricks or genetic engineering wizardry. Just sustainably grown, naturally produced lower alcohol wine.

Last year, Dr John Forrest gave an interview to the drinks business, in which he spoke out against the rise of zero % abv wines in the UK, saying that he finds the concept offensive.

Our wines are for socialising and enjoying with friends, but still staying sharp, the pair state on their website.

The Doctors are impeccably structured, full flavoured, lower alcohol lifestyle wines, with no compromises in the wine growing process and more importantly no compromises to your wine drinking experience.

The range is available in the UK at Waitrose and Tesco.

Is It Worth Buying

Cense Rose

INSIDER had the opportunity to grab a sneak taste test of this new lower-calorie wine that’s out now on the Weight Watchers website. This is part of our ongoing taste test series. In the past, we’ve tried everything from red wine to cheap beer.

Our verdict? The wine was surprisingly drinkable. We were expecting a cheap, boxed wine flavor or the strong aftertaste that some other diet liquors tend to have, but instead got a nice and fruity flavor profile.

Our taste testers called the wine “fruity and juicy, but not too sweet” with distinct “tropical fruit and pear overtones.” We thought that the wine was surprisingly tart and tasted almost “like a sour candy” with a “zingy aftertaste.” Of course, this Sauvignon Blanc was nowhere near the quality you might get at a fancy restaurant, but you would never know it was a “diet” alcoholic beverage.

“I’ve definitely had worse,” one taster reacted. “When wine is bad you can immediately tell, and you can’t have more than one sip. I’d drink this.”

How Much Alcohol Is In Cense Weight Watchers Wine

  • While Cense boasts that it has all the flavor of a Sauvignon blanc despite its reduced calorie count, the wine is only 9.6 percent alcohol by volume, compared to most bottles’ ~13 percent ABV alcohol content. And that’s intentionalthe process of making this wine involves filtering out some of the alcohol in service of flavor.

Finally A Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers teamed up with the Truett Hurst Winery to launch Cense Sauvignon blanc, which boasts only 85 calories and three SmartPoints per glass.

Finally, a wine that works in tandem with your diet goals. Weight Watchers has teamed up with the Truett Hurst Winery based in Northern California to bring us Cense, a low-calorie Sauvignon blanc. The wine is only 85 calories per glass, or three of Weight Watchers’ SmartPoints. Cense’s grapes are grown in Marlborough, New Zealand, a region known for its Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.

One of the most fundamental guiding principles behind Cense is avoiding shoving the whole diet-friendly, low calorie thing in your face. As Ryan Nathan, Weight Watchers’ vice president of consumer products, told Wine Spectator, “We’re being very sensitive to the consumer groups, both the broader people that are living life fully while trying to lose weight, and then the people that are more anchored in the Weight Watchers customer base. You’re not going to see ’30 percent less calories!’ plastered on the front of the bottle.”

So how will customers know that this is a lower-calorie, Weight Watchers-backed wine? Look for a little label on the back that you can remove if you want to.

You can read more about Cense and buy it online at censewines.com.

But how, exactly, did the two companies create a lower-calorie wine that supposedly tastes the same? According to Truett-Hurst co-founder, president and CEO Phil Hurst, Cense is made using “an innovative technology that captures the compounds that make up the flavor and aroma of a wine, holding them aside while removing excessive alcohol.” Indeed, a bottle Cense is 9.6 percent ABV while most wines hover somewhere between the 11 to 14 percent ABV range.

Of course, Weight Watchers isn’t the first company to get into the diet wine spirits business. Reality star Bethenny Frankel has made millions with her ready-to-drink Skinnygirl cocktails and wines.

And this wine isn’t exactly a total first for Weight Watchers, either. In 2012, the weight loss program partnered with Australian winemaker McWilliam’s Wines to create a several lower-alcohol wines but that line was only available in U.K. grocery stores.

Cense’s first wine is now available online for $15, but at Kroger stores it’s retailing for $13.99 a bottle. And for those already looking forward to warmer days ahead, a rosé is coming soon.

Brancott Estate Flight Series

Calories per 125ml glass: 75 , 72

ABV: 9%

Last year New Zealands Brancott Estate, owned by Pernod Ricard, relaunched its 9% ABV wine range, the Flight Series. Comprising a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, each wine carries around 20% fewer calories than the typical wine produced from the same grape variety. Rather than using alcohol removal techniques, the wines are produced from grapes that have been harvested early, with a lower sugar content and higher acidity.

Speaking about the relaunch last year, Pernod Ricard UK said now was the right time to reintroduce these wines to the UK market, having been last available in 2015 when it said the appetite for such wines was not as strong.

The range is available at Sainsburys in the UK.

And It’s Just In Time For Toasting The Holidays

by Shelley Emling, AARP, November 15, 2017

Courtesy Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers officials say the company has been working on producing low-calorie wines for nearly two years.

Some may call it a Christmas miracle. Just in time for the holidays, Weight Watchers is rolling out a line of diet wine called Cense in collaboration with Truett-Hurst Winery of California. The first offering: a 2016 Cense sauvignon blanc from New Zealand that has only 85 calories per glass, compared with 120 calories for other white wines. Next up: a rosé.

Weight Watchers assigns a value, called SmartPoints , to foods and instructs members to lose weight by keeping track and limiting the number they consume. The diet white wine has fewer points for the same 5-ounce serving, according to Weight Watchers.

They also consume less alcohol. Cense has an alcohol content of 9.6 percent, whereas the typical sauvignon blanc has around 11 to 13 percent.

The idea for low-calorie wines has been brewing for nearly two years, says Ryan Nathan, Weight Watchers vice president of products, licensing and e-commerce.

Were not about diet. Were about living life to its fullest, he said, according to USA Today. Wine is the No. 2 tracked beverage in our app. We know members are enjoying wine. Sometimes, maybe too much, he added.

But is the new low-calorie wine actually, well, good? Following a taste test, the Insider lifestyle website reported that the wine was surprisingly drinkable.
