What Popular Wine Style Is Italy Known For

Italy is known for a wide variety of wine styles, but the most famous is the food-friendly Italian red wine that has become a sort of calling card for the nation as a whole . Grapes are cultivated in the southern part of Trentino and Veneto. They are harvested manually at the beginning of September. The vines grown in the valley floor and the hilly area, where the high temperature range between day and night leads to an excellent level of maturation. The grapes undergo a soft press and the must obtained is put in contact with the skins for about 8 hours to reach the right colour and fragrance. Then follows alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts at controlled temperature of 16°-18° C. The wine is aged for about 2 months on the same yeast to make it full bodied and smooth.

Amicone Prosecco Doc Extra Dry

This wine, with its golden colour and greenish reflections fine and continuous perlage. It has an intense, elegant, fresh and fruity aroma. Its full and balanced taste blends fruity notes with a strong minerality. The grapes for this Prosecco Extra Dry DOC are harvested manually. Afterwards the grapes are softly crushed to obtain a clear must, through refrigeration and filtration operations. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature between 18° and 22°. When fermentation is over, followed by stabilization and second fermentation, the Charmat method is carried out. The residual content of sugar it is determined according to parameters required for the Extra Dry denomination.

As if French oak didnt already break the bank, some of these winemakers in the Veneto region are using specialty oaks and woods like Slavonian oak to age their wines. Amarone producers are also required to age their wines for a minimum of two years. The longer the winery needs to hold onto the wine, the more expensive it will be. Working on multiple vintages requires a lot of space in your winery.

What Is Amarone Wine

Amarone is short for Amarone della Valpolicella which is a red wine blend made in Valpolicella, Veneto, in northwest Italy . This area is further divided into three sub-regions or geographical sub-zones Classico, Valpantena, and Est or the extended zone.

Each of these zones essentially has its own identity. Amarone wine from Classico tends to be softer, more aromatic, and more fruit-forward. Amarone wine from Est tends to have a heartier tannin level and be more acidic. Wine from Valpantena is a happy medium.

Amarone is wine made from partially dried grapes. This process of partially drying grapes on straw mats is called appassimento. The grapes must be dried until at least December 1 following the vintage and they are required to be fermented until at least 14% alcohol. The wine has also aged a minimum of two years in the bottle or four years for a riserva wine.

Amarone is also classified as a DOCG wine.

The taste is balanced, spicy, well structured with a right acidity level. Grapes undergo a cold maceration process for about 8 hours before the crushing in order to obtain a fruity bouquet. The alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperature of 16° for part of the grapes, while the rest brews in oak barriques to obtain balanced and harmonic flavours. Afterwards, the wine refines in the bottle for 3 months at least.
