The Vineyards And The Terroir

The vines which cover the slopes of Mount Vesuvius are directly descended from the Aminei of Thessaly, brought to Italy by this people of ancient Greece in the 5th century BC:

The vines are rooted in dark and porous lavic soil, which does not need to be irrigated as it naturally retains humidity, releasing it as needed.

The name of this wine is entwined with a legend. According to the story, God cried when he found a corner of Heaven stolen by Lucifer and where his tears fell, there grew the grapes that make Lacryma Christi, which translates as “tears of Christ.” Made from 100% Coda di Volpe grown in volcanic soil, this wine is fermented in stainless steel to preserve its unique, fresh profile.

Pale yellow in color, aromas of pear and other tree fruits complement undertones of white peach and licorice. On the palate, strident minerality and good body make this a well-structured, food-friendly wine.

This wine is great as an aperitif, but it also pairs well with shrimp cocktails, Lyonnaise sauces, seafood risottos, and calamari friti.

Lacryma Christi The Wine Born From The Tears Of Christ

Today Id like to tell the story of Lacryma Christi, an extraordinary wine, well known and exported all over the world, whose name recalls an old, poetic legend.

Lacryma Christi is produced in Campania region, at the foot of Vesuvius, a volcano renowned for its mysteries and dangerousness.

The destruction of the city of Pompei is an example of the destructive power of the volcano, but, despite this, the area has always been inhabited and cultivated.

The volcanic soil, fertile and rich in minerals, and the sunny climate, together with the humidity of the sea, make this area a perfect place for making superior wines, with unique and exceptional aromas, which can please the most refined and heterogeneous tastes.

It is also a land of myths and legends, intertwined with historical hints and religion. Of course, there are quite a few legends about Lacryma Christi too

One legend says that Lucifer, a traitorous angel expelled from paradise, on leaving Eden stole a piece of it, bringing it to the Earth, and using it to make the Gulf of Naples, which is actually a true paradise from my point of view!

Christ, saddened by the loss of the traitorous angel and his stolen piece of paradise, wept his tears on Vesuvius, and from those tears the vines and the basic grapes of Lacryma were born.

Probably there are a few more stories behind this wine, but it seems that none of these has links to real events and the truth is that the origin of the name of this wine is not known.

Lacryma Christi

This unique varietal has been produced on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius since Roman times indeed the Ancient poet Martial wrote: “Bacchus loved these hills more than his native hills of Nisa”. The name Lacryma Christi can be traced to a number of legends, including one in which Christ, recognizing the Gulf of Naples as a piece of heaven stolen by Lucifer when he was cast out, grieved the loss with tears. Grape vines sprung from the earth where they fell, creating the Lacryma Christi variety from which this smooth yet bold wine is now made.

Lacryma Christi was awarded D.O.C. recognition in 1983.
