Nine Noteworthy Wines To Buy Now Including An Innovative White Blend From California

The Layout Line Conundrum!

In 1989, when the Wagner family released a blended white wine from California called Conundrum, they were going against the grain of wine lovers who were clamouring for more chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and other wines sold with the names of the grape varieties on the label.

Originally known as Caymus Conundrum, the wine wasnt buttery or creamy like the popular chardonnay style of the day. It was a blend of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, sémillon and muscat made into a fruity wine with some sweetness that was inspired by the Wagner familys roots in the Alsace region of France.

Each grape variety in the Conundrum blend is fermented individually and aged separately until being blended by the winemaking team a few weeks before bottling.

Its success with consumers in the United States and around the world inspired the Wagner family to expand operations outside of the Napa Valley. Conundrum became its own brand and production moved to a new winery in Monterey, California, which also produces a red, rosé and sparkling wine to complete the range.

It also inspired huge interest in the blended white wine that continues to this day, as winemakers around the world conjured up their own Conundrum-style wines.

Caymus Wine: The Story Of A Family

In 1971, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and Charles F. Wagner asked their son Chuck Wagner whether he was interested in starting a family wine business. Chuck agreed and the company was born, the fruit of the union of three pioneer families in Californias Napa Valley. Lornas paternal grandfather actually made wine at an old stone winery in Howell Mountain back in the late 1800s before arriving in Napa Valley. Lornas maternal grandparents arrived in Napa in 1857 as part of a wagon train from Bible Grove, Missouri. Meanwhile, the Wagners emigrated in 1906, purchasing 70 acres of land and setting up Honig Winery in 1915. Unfortunately, the Wagner family business was destroyed by Prohibition, which became reality just 4 years later.

Charlie Wagner married Lorna Belle Glos in 1934 and in 1941 they purchased 73 acres of land in Rutherford, which they planted to fruit orchards and to wine grapes. In the 1960s, they decided to devote the entire property to wine grape production, planting Pinot Noir, Johannisberg Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon from cuttings of Fay Vineyard in the Stags Leap District. Back then, the couple sold the grapes they produced to the nearby Inglenook Vineyards and other producers. But in 1971, the plan to produce their own signature wines was hatched, and Caymus Vineyards was born.

Express Your Gratitude To Friends And Loved Ones In A Grand Way By Sending This Caymus Cabernet Gift Basket And Let Them Enjoy The Plush Flavors Of Premium Napa Valley Wine Alongside A Variety Of Delicious Fare

Founded in 1972 by Chuck Wagner, Caymus Vineyards is one of Napa Valleys most celebrated wineries known primarily for their exquisite offerings featuring the regions quintessential varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. Despite decades of near-constant, the winery remained, at its core, a family-owned-and-run company allowing them to focus on producing extraordinary wines free from the constraints that often stifle most corporatized wine producers.

Serving as their signature offering since its establishment, the Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon is a premium red wine offering known for its rich fruit flavors and silky smooth tannins making it a truly decadent treat that is guaranteed to enamor even the most discriminating of drinkers. Each vintage of this wine begins with the grapes being manually harvested, washed, and carefully pressed before undergoing fermentation. After this, the resulting wine is then left to age for several months in oak barrels for several months before finally being bottled and labeled.

Dark, scarlet red in color, each sip of this wine greets its drinker with a luscious bouquet of currants, ripe dark berries, raspberries, cherries, and cocoa which continue well into the multi-layered palate where they are joined by lovely notes vanilla and soft, velvety tannins before wrapping up with an incredibly long-lasting finish.

Final Touch 12.7Oz. Conundrum Aerator Decanter *** To view ...

Region: Etna, Sicily, Italy | ABV: 13.5% ABV | Tasting Notes: Red berries, Ash, Black pepper, Clove

Love Italian reds from Piedmont, Tuscany, and beyond? If youve never dove into the world of earthy Sicilian reds, specifically from Etna, we cant recommend them enough.

These earthy, soil-driven wines come from the ash-laden volcanic soils of the region, which impart an undeniable mineral quality to the juice. This mouthwatering expression oozes with flavors of red berries, smoky ash, black pepper and clove.

I love a good Nerello Mascalese from Sicily. Theres something about that volcanic rusticity and high-toned cherry notes that strike a chord with me. If the red wine is mostly mass produced, then its a no-no for me. Sylvester Inda, Wine Manager, CoolVines Powerhouse

Dear Dr. Vinny,

Is Conundrum wine by Conundrum Vineyards owned by Caymus, who has made Conundrum for years? Is it the same wine? I cannot find a recent vintage from Caymus.

Alan G., Santa Barbara, Calif.

Dear Alan,

It is the same wine, but a couple things have changed. When the aromatic kitchen-sink blend of white wine was first introduced in 1989, it was originally called Caymus Conundrum. Conundrum is still owned by Caymus Vineyards Wagner family, but they split it into a separate brand beginning with the 2001 vintage. In addition to the name change, Conundrum is now made at its own winery in Monterey County, while Caymus remains up in Napas Rutherford district.
