University Liquors & Fine Wines has been open for a few Sundays, but its been slow since students left, Sterchi Morton Jr. said.

We dont expect a lot of business on Sunday until maybe the fall, Morton said.

The store opened for one Sunday before students left, and it was successful. The store, located on Cumberland Avenue, sold a lot of champagne for graduation.

Taking Advantage Of Memorial Day Weekend

Salima Mohammad, who owns Merchants Wine & Spirits in North Knoxville, is taking advantage of the holiday weekend. Shes running a sale and is offering sample tastings on Friday.

Its been unexpectedly good, she said of Sunday sales. She typically sees a rush after church and another from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Consumer awareness still is increasing, she said, and its too soon to tell whether Saturday or Monday sales will suffer because of the change. Shell be gearing up for a busy season in the fall.

Total Wine Announces Wilmington Grand Opening

WILMINGTON Wine lovers are sure to flock to Renaissance Market off Military Cutoff Road by the end of the month as retail giant Total Wine makes its Wilmington debut.

The grand opening is slated for June 30 to celebrate the superstores 13th opening in North Carolina. VIP attendees will get a sneak peek the day before, during a ribbon cutting.

The market boasts a selection of more than 8,000 wines and 2,500 beers and will carry an array of local vendors.

Store manager Dawn Ward said grand opening activities are planned for the whole weekend, including local wineries and breweries on site offering tastings. The details of the day-to-day events are still being confirmed.

Between 20 to 30 staff will be on payroll throughout the year, with additional seasonal employees on board during the peak summer months, Ward added.

Originating in Delaware in 1991 as the brainchild of brothers David and Robert Trone, Total Wine operates over 230 stores across the country. Before this store, the closest one in operation to Wilmington was Myrtle Beach and opened in 2019.

The local 22,700-square-foot space, formerly Earth Fare, was completely reconstructed, including demolition of existing walls and ceilings and improved lighting. Contractors also built walk-in coolers and a humidor for cigars and tobacco products.

Got my elderly mother out the other day, and took her to Total Wine & More to get a few things for the holidays, as we had heard how big the place was, and what an awful experience it was. Firstly, as soon as we walked in, a greeter chastised us for our improper mask placement . We were going to leave right then, but as we had driven 23 miles, we decided to stick it out. Yes, the store is vast, but the signage was terrible, and as we wandered around looking for certain items, we decided to ask a worker for guidance. He said he was busy& told us to search for someone else, before walking away. The second person we found was clearly inexperienced, and the third person begrudgingly listened to our queries, but really couldnt appear to care less. We left before getting anything, and on the way out, stopped a manager to tell him what happened, and he replied, You can write a letter to the company. Trust me, the dollar or two you might save is NOT worth being treated like that.

He said his parents are coming down this weekend to bring some furniture. Remember the excitement of furnishing your first home?!! Im excited for them! So glad he called, made this grandmas day!

Monday we worked on painting and then called it quits early. We took ourselves next door to Karens pool. She bought a new pool vacuum and didnt have time to try it out before she left with John so we did! Works better than any one she bought before and last night told me it was only $16.00. Old style, I think my parents had the same one when we were teens. We got cooled off in the process!

Total Wine & More Hosts Grand Opening Of Brentwood Store This Week

Total Wine and More will hold their grand opening on Thursday, November 18th in the Brentwood Place Shopping Center, located at 330 Franklin Road in Brentwood, next to Nordstrom Rack.

Inside the store, they will offer 8,167 wines, 4,874 spirits, and 2,693 beers. The motto of the store is lowest prices and the best selection stating they have 1,500 wines under $10 a bottle. The new store will also have an & More rewards program for customers where you collect ten points for every $1 spent in the store.

Hours of operation for the store, Monday Thursday, 9 am -10 pm, Friday-Saturday, 9 am -11 pm, and Sunday 10 am 8 pm.

Adobe Wine & Spirits owner Dennis Miller has not opened his store for any of the five Sundays in which liquor sales have been legal in Tennessee.

Nor will he.

US drinks retailer Total Wine has lost its appeal to expand its footprint New York, following the rejection of its case by the NY Supreme Court.

The New York Supreme Court has rejected the Maryland-based wine giants bid to open a second store in the state at in College Point, Flushing in Queens, the Shanken Daily News reported, upholding a decision by the New York State Liquor Authority last June. The retailer first applied for the license in August 2019.

It is the third time Total Wine, which has more than 200 stores in 26 states across the US, has been barred from opening a second store in the New York area. In September 2019, the court refused to grant the wine retailers with a license for a proposed site in Westchester, saying it was not appropriate for the region, while an earlier bid to open a store in Stony Brook was also rejected by the state liquor board.

Under New York state law, national drinks chains are banned from applying for a state license to open and operate stores in the states, in a bid to protect mom and pop stores, however entrepreneurs affiliated with national firms are able to apply for a single license for an individual store under a different corporate name. In 2016, Total Wines co-founder David Trone obtained a retail liquor license for a new retailer, Westbury FIne Wines, part of the newly formed New York Fine Wine & Spirits LLC, which operates as Total Wines. Southland Spirits & Wine owner Jim Maples said customers still are learning about the changes. Many thought they could purchase only wine on Sunday, he said, and some are still getting over the shock of the change.

He has seen a slight uptick in business at his South Knoxville store but thinks it will even out.

Smoky Mountain Wine & Spirits off Chapman Highway will open for its first Sunday of sales, employee Mary Kelly said. The owner has been getting back on his feet after a surgery and a few competitors nearby already have been opening.
