Casillero Del Diablo Reserva Privada 2019

NEW – Introducing Carmen Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017, rated 97pts
  • Producer: Concha y Toro
  • Approx. UK retail price: £12

As the least expensive Gold-medal-winning wine in the 2022 competition, Casillero del Diablos Reserva Privada Cabernet Sauvignon is this years best-value pick. Using fruit from Chiles top Cabernet-growing region, the Maipo Valley, it is a benchmark expression for under £20, with delicious characters of blackcurrant, cedar and sweet tobacco, a subtle hint of dried mint, then some creamy vanilla, before the wine finishes with a note of cracked pepper and lingering, fine tannins to gently dry the palate. In short, a fully ripe, layered style of red thats juicy but not heavy or sweet in style.

OShaughnessy 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon $75, 97 points. This is such an outstanding wine at any price, but here were talking about outstanding value as well. Notes of iron and crushed rock lead to a lengthy balance of juicy red fruit and clove. With small amounts of Merlot, Malbec, Saint-Macaire and Cabernet Franc, it shows a deft hand at blending, with lasting notes of black pepper and nuanced oak. Editors Choice. Bottled under screw cap, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is certainly a worthy follow-up to the monumental 2015. As pure, seamless and classy as it gets, with heavenly notes of crème de cassis, white flowers, lead pencil shavings, graphite and damp, rock-like minerality, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, no hard edges and spectacular length. This is another monumental wine from this team that needs to be tasted to be believed. Jeb Dunnuck

Region: Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France | ABV: 13.5% | Tasting Notes: Cassis, Graphite, Chocolate-covered cherries

Whether it’s a genre-defining hip-hop album or a seminal Hitchcock film, sometimes you just need to go back to the old-school offerings to make sense of the new stuffand it’s hard to imagine a more classic interpretation of cabernet sauvignon than Château Cos dEstournel. “This famous estate can trace its winemaking roots back to 1811, and was classified as a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, making it one of the elite producers of the region,” says Coppi. “It is a an absolutely stunning wine with the blend consisting of predominantly cabernet sauvignon along with merlot and a splash of cabernet franc.”

As is the case with any serious Bordeaux, some patience is necessary if you want the wine to express its true potential. “In their youth, these are monolithic, muscular, powerhouse wines,” says Coppi. “After a decade or more of cellar aging, the complex layers and nuance of the wine unfold in the glass leather, tobacco, cassis, violets, graphite, black tea, stewed plums, chocolate covered cherries, and coffee are framed by silky tannins and fresh acidity.” It’s an old-school track worth waiting for.

Stellar Cabernet Sauvignon From Napa Valley

Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon, Leopoldina Vineyard

You can never taste enough Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, right? This is especially true when youre dealing with excellent to outstanding vintages, such as 2018 and 2019. Theres rarely a problem ripening grapes in Napa Valley, but some years are better than others, as they yield wines with more floral aromatics, have better acidity and are more harmonious.

Lets briefly examine 2018 and 2019. The former year was exceptional as one winemaker told me, as summer temperatures were moderate, rarely exceeding 90 degrees. Combine that with foggy evenings with cool temperatures, and you had an ideal recipe for well-balanced wines that offered very good acidity. The best examples of 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon will age gracefully for many years to come, and most local vintners believe 2018 was the finest vintage in Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon since the heralded 2013 season.

So 2018 was a classic in Napa Valley, but Peter Heitz, winemaker at Turnbull winery in Oakville, believes 2019 is the finest vintage in Napa since 2007, with the possible exception of 2013. Its too soon to call 2019 better than 2013, Heitz remarks, but I love our 2019s. He notes that while the level of tannins is high, the tannins are of extremely high quality they are creamy and round and the perfect partner to the vintages generous fruit.

Here are notes on five Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons from 2019, and one from 2018.

Harlan Estate 2015 Red Napa Valley

Bottled in early 2018, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Proprietary Red Wine is a little closed, slowly unfurling to reveal black cherries, crème de cassis and plum pudding with nuances of potpourri, baking spices and tilled soil, plus wafts of garrigue and wild sage. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated with exquisite ripe, fine-grained tannins and fantastic poise and depth with a long, decadently fruited finish. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

The 10 Best Cabernet Sauvignon To Drink Now

One of the worlds most popular wine grapes is the product of carelessness. Cabernet Sauvignon was accidentally created several hundred years ago in France, a the spawn of two famous parents named Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.

The rest is pretty much history. The grape variety has gone on to become the most planted and produced on the planet. When most of us think of wine, we think of Cabs inky red tones in a glass. It has, in short, become synonymous with all of wine.

In France, its one of a handful of esteemed grapes often blended in the Bordeaux region. In the states and other younger winemaking nations, its blended too, but its also often let alone as its own stand-alone wine. It tends to be big and tannic, ideal for a burger or bolognese. Here, especially, Cab tends to be quite fruit-forward and concentrated, the ideal pick for those into the jammier wines.

With so much Cab out there, where does one begin? Generally, the place to begin is where its warm and there are older, more established vines. That could mean anywhere from the American West Coast to Australia or Argentina. Here are the 10 best Cabernet Sauvignon that we picked out for you. Cheers!

Weve worked hard over the past 60-plus years to farm and craft the very best wines we can, and Cabernet Sauvignon is something we love and do best. Justin Seidenfeld, winemaker, Rodney Strong

Located in the heart of the Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill AVA, Rodney Strong Vineyards has been a name signifying farming and winemaking excellence for more than 60 years. We are thankful and grateful to have all that effort acknowledged.

According to Seidenfeld, theres a lot going on at Rodney Strong that should make their wines even better, or more sustainable in the future.

The story of Rodney Strong began with a professional dancer coming to the Russian River Valley with a pioneering spirit and a love of fine wines. After more than 60 years in Sonoma County, the Rodney Strong Vineyards, owned since 1989 by the Klein Family, has become a hallmark of Sonoma County wines. Named in honour of the famous 17th-century Mazzei ancestor, Philip is produced from Fonterutoli and Belguardo old vine grapes grown on limestone and sandstone soils on those two estates in Tuscany. The wine shows masses of ripe bramble and blackberry fruit and smoky and hedgerow accents. In fact, it is one of the principal grape varieties of New World wine-growing countries, such as the United States, Australia, and Chile. Yet, no matter where Cabernet Sauvignon wines come from, they exhibit deep color, a fine tannic structure, and notes of dark fruits, tomato leaves, and tree bark.
